Angel | 723 comments Hey, you did something that I wouldn't do a live podcast/or video so good for you. Aislinn, your voice didn't sound horrible at all. Tara's voice sounded great.

Angel | 723 comments Alexis wrote: "I had about $100 in promotions and giveaway planned. I just cancelled it all. I'm going to hire a great editor instead and then use the rest of my promotional budget for one big investment: bargain..."

That's the first step to great marketing.

message 53: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Sounds like a better plan, Alexis.

Thank you! And, yeah, that Masters was a total mistake hahahaha.

And good luck, Alexis! I hope it goes amazingly well!

Thanks! I don't actually mind being on camera. I worked in the film industry for a while, so I understand the smoke and mirrors. :p But I just can't listen to my own voice. I did actually think about starting a youtube channel for a while, but I'm not sure what I'd talk about, so I scrapped the idea. Lol.

That one is slightly different, but I suspect that's it for my paperback cover. I need to get it done and move on now.

I'm uploading a new copy of the eBook, because I've made time tiny changes. Apparently I'm uploading it a million times because I keep finding things I don't like on the previewer. Even KDP suggests I get a coffee...

message 56: by Aislinn (new)

Aislinn Nice cover!

message 57: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Thanks, except that when I upload it to KDP (thought I'd use that one for the hell of it) it does this:

Image may contain: one or more people and text

I've now got a double ISBN box where the one automatically put in by Amazon (no idea it would do that, never done one before) only partially covers the one the designer put in. I was going to hit publish on that today. :-( Awaiting an updating file. I'm just not sure how many edits I can make for my £25.

message 58: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I could fix it myself, but I'd rather not have to faff in photoshop.

message 59: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Graphic fixed. Awaiting page by page confirmation by me that I haven't cocked up...It's great this is. Just found a blank page at the end of a chapter. That'll cost me an extra penny!

message 60: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I've left a couple of mine. I had three lines on a page and one line on a page. I've left them both. I quite like the one line, it's a mini cliff hanger, over the page. The rest I don't care about. But a blank page-I swear that wasn't there last week when I was editing.

And now for a re-upload of Smashwords and I'm done. I've got to format that first. Could take me all night! I don't know why it has to be more involved.

message 61: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments That might annoy me if it happened too often.

message 62: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Not worth it for one chapter and 1p of savings. A whole penny!

message 63: by Aislinn (new)

Aislinn I didn't know whether to put this in this thread or the 'Something good happened' thread, but check it out:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZY6MCFY

I got a new novella coming out next week!

During my panic over the weekend about bad sales I decided I was going to set aside the 4th book in the Soldiering On series to get this half-finished novella ready for publication. Despite the fact that my sales went back to normal, I stuck with it.

This is another contemporary romance one. I've tried my hand at being funny, which isn't natural to me, so it might be horribly embarrassing, but worth a shot, right? I think a lot of people could do with some laughs these days. ;)

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Aislinn, You are so right. Life is hard, we could use a laugh. Congratulations and good luck! Hugs!!

message 65: by Aislinn (new)

Aislinn Thanks so much, Sue!

I've enjoyed all your books but I must say the two contemporaries have been my favorites so far, five star reads even though they wete short. You just hit all the right notes with them. ANYWAYS THIS is not the thread for unsolicited advice so let me just end with: I'm looking forward to this new one! Lol

message 67: by Aislinn (new)

Aislinn Awww thanks! <3 I'm so glad you enjoy them. I really hope you like this one, too. And I totally get the hint. I'll write some more contemporaries this year. ;)

message 68: by Aislinn (new)

Aislinn Thanks so much Alex! Really appreciate it. :D

message 69: by Christine (new)

Christine (christineroney) | 261 comments Alexis, I had some free time this morning and downloaded the apps you recommended in your article. I've only tried Typorama but it's so cool. I'm pretty inept at graphics but I can tell these are going to help a lot. Thank you!

message 70: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Got all excited when I checked KDP reports and saw someone had bought my paperback. Then I realised that was the one I bought and I'm actually £5.43 out of pocket.

message 71: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Awesome news. I'll try to be brief. We are 2 years into a 4 year finance on our current car. I have Hypermobility Syndrome which has got worse since we bought the car. My right leg slides out of the socket if I sit for more than an hour in it.

Because it's a 4 year term, the amount of money we still owe on the car puts us in negative equity to hand it back. First place we went to couldn't refinance the negative equity. Took it back to the place we bought it from, not only can they refinance the remainder of that loan (which will be paid off as soon as I get my inheritance) they sold us a car that is more suited for my joints for less money than we're paying per month. It's a newer, better car than the one we have for less money per month.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Amy, sorry for your joint health issue, but glad this refinance worked out for you and the vehicle is more suited for you. Hugs!!

I can empathize with that. My health isn't so great either. I'm glad you got yourself a better deal on a vehicle though!

message 74: by Steven (last edited Apr 22, 2017 11:52PM) (new)

Steven Mix (steven_mix) | 44 comments So here's my random news:

I got a new author photo. It's over there.
^--------------
It was designed by an artist friend of mine and originated from the time I held all of Facebook hostage over two bags of Hot Cheetos. For some reason that event was popular and has led to folks coming up to me at local cons and giving me bags of hot Cheetos.

It's weird. I agree it's weird as hell but my writing coach said I should embrace my weird because that's what people seem to love about me.

Oh and I wrote a new blog post about The Unknown Author and book appearances. It's a response to Scalzi's article about book appearances as a famous author.

I like Scalzi a lot but I couldn't relate at all so I took it a different route:
https://stevenmix.ghost.io/on-scalzi-...

I'm hoping some of you can relate to it.

No wait.

Scratch that. I hope none of you can relate to it and that you're all more popular than I. I just hope some of you think it's an interesting post.

message 75: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Ah the unknown author. That would be me more than you, I haven't done any sort of out of the house promo. Enjoyed reading your blog post.

Picked up our "new" car today. Cheaper than the old one, yet newer. Diesel, not petrol, yet with only £20 car tax instead of £130. Infinitely more comfortable to sit in. Just as well because I now have what appears to be a circulation problem in my right leg and both feet. The feel icy. I intend to ignore it and hope it goes away rather than drop off.

message 76: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Yes, big relief. I have high hopes of getting to the caravan at the weekend without my right leg dislocating. It would be a major relief.

message 77: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Stifling the shudders today. I have posted on three different groups, trying to promote and network. I don't do these things easily. OK technically it's two groups. I deleted a post I put on one group because I suddenly got intimidated by the whole thing.

I found a group that seemed to fit the genre I write in, but it's not very active. At least I did something.

message 78: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments It'll have to be a hot chocolate I ate the other stuff yesterday. Alcohol is a very good idea though.

message 79: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I need something sweet at some point in the day. I suppose a 40 calorie hot chocolate is the lesser of many evils.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments Amy, Giving you a supportive pat on your back for your bravery and accomplishment. Hugs

Alex, I balanced my checkbook today, then felt too sick to eat. Trying to keep my sense of humor. Hugs

message 81: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I do my finances every week. It's really not good reading. It's an exercise in how big the minus numbers are. Ugh.

I get depressed balancing the books too. I make my husband do that.

Shannon Drawe | 30 comments Checking one's accountings as an indie author is a tough time. Being a luxury retail manager was much better monetarily, but also completely balanced out by my soul withering away with each passing moment.

Cheering you on! That's good. Little steps.

message 85: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I have joined another group. I have interacted with these human types that inhabit these groups. It was not an easy or a natural thing to do, but I did it. I would now like to sit in the corner and talk to my pet rock...

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Thanks Sam, appreciate it.

Right I am a member of two M/M romance groups I can't really post in yet because both my books have women in them. Also, three erotica groups, two aren't highly active. The other terrifies the bejesus out of me for reasons unknown, but I have infiltrated and attempted to sound like I know what I'm doing. I have yet to be kicked out.

I feel like I should down a stiff drink.

I would suggest you still interact. Do the intro, comment on a few threads. Even if it's horrible feeling, try to be a little active, so when your book does come out, you can say you've been active.

You talk to us just fine! We don't throw tomatoes at you. ;)

message 92: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments No but everyone here is nice and welcoming and I'd prefer a banana if you don't mind. And everywhere else is new and terrifying and unknown. I have posted in relevant threads usually headed with words like "authors introduce yourself here" and "new member introductions" so I've done those. And I've even had conversations on the active one today. I'm waiting for people to find out I'm a fraud. But I'm not sure what I'm supposed to have done fraudulently. Shudder.

message 93: by Nat (new)

Nat Kennedy | 153 comments I know! I've met some awesome people here on Goodreads.

You're not a fraud. I think that we're all in the same boat. Some people figure it out faster. Some people have a different path. But we're here because we like writing and read and want to share stories.

Glad to see you're interacting there. I followed you to one of the groups and did an intro post there too.

message 94: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments I saw you there. I'm not yet convinced that I'm a good fit for some of the groups but we'll see.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 970 comments We lost one of our dogs to congestive heart failure last night. We rescue abused, old, sick, and unwanted dogs hoping to give them a good life before they pass on. Of course, I never think they've had enough time to just be a happy-go-lucky dog. Sad. Please hug your pet, if you have one, for me. Thank you. Hugs
