On Dit - Series reads

What are some of your favorite series and why?
It's very hard to decide, but the ones that popped into my head when I read the questions are:
Julia Quinn The Bridgertons
I loved The Bridgertons. It was the very first Historical Romance series that I've ever read and I enjoyed every bit of it. It was fun, the banter was witty and you could really relate to the characters, understand them and end up loving them. Julia Quinn is a wonderful writer. My fav is Romancing Mister Bridgerton.
Lisa Kleypas The Hathaways and The Wallflowers
What's not to love about these two series? I loved the hathaways and was really sad when I finished the series (I had a book hangover for a while!) I really felt like I was living with them, I was rooting for each of the characters. My favorite is Mine Till Midnight.
As for the wallflowers, I loved loved them!! probably my favorites of all the series I've read so far. I loved the idea of the book, I loved their friendship and I was really emotionally invested in the story. My favorite is Devil in Winter which I've read many times.
Have you read all the books in the series or are there more to go? Is it getting better or more watered down as you go on?
Yup, I've read every book in the series and there aren't anymore to go (unfortunately). I wouldn't say that they got watered down as I read because I loved every one, but I loved some books better than others (in the same series).
Favorite characters in the series or any series?
Colin Bridgerton because he's adorable and charming. I just love a hero with a sense of humor and likes to joke... and what really made me love his book best in the series, is because I have a thing for the plain girl getting the hot guy.
Sebastien St. Vincent because he's such a devil and too charming not to like him!! and same reason as the other one.
Any series you are dying to start? Or to get back to or to finish?
Well... I'd say Pennyroyal Green by Julie Anne Long. Some of my goodreads friends recommended it to me and it has a high rating so...
Any hard and fast series rules like you have to start with #1, no jumping around, read series one after another, etc.
I like reading series in order but if I like the synopsis of the third, fourth or even the last book in the series, I'd read it and then go back to the first one. And if I accidentally start reading in the middle, it doesn't bother me too much.

just wanted to say that I felt the same as you about Daniel Mackenzie. I loved him in the first books before his, but I absolutely did not care about him in his book.

What are some of your favorite series and why?
I too love Elizabeth Hoyt's writing. My favorite series of hers is The Princes with Maiden Lane a close 2nd and then The Four Soldiers.
Her writing is just the right mix of steam, emotional intimacy, angst and humor. Her characters are wonderful and she has a knack for redeeming the darker ones.
I've also enjoyed Tessa Dare's Spindle Cove and Castles Ever After series. They are less angsty and more humorous. Entertaining when I'm in the mood for something a little less serious.
Favorite characters in the series or any series?
I have a soft spot for bad boys with hearts of gold (or at least mostly of gold). So I love Sebastian and Evie in Devil in Winter and Artemis and Maximus in Duke of Midnight, but interestingly enough my favorite is Val Napier in Duke of Sin. He is just so dark and twisted, but there is something endearing about him too.
Any series you are dying to start? Or to get back to or to finish?
Two series that I need to get back to are Rules of Scoundrels by Sarah MacLean and the Mackenzies and MacBrides. I'm a couple of books behind in both.
Any hard and fast series rules like you have to start with #1, no jumping around, read series one after another, etc.
I'm OCD when it comes to reading in order, but I'm happy to read various series simultaneously. For instance, I'm working my way through Stephanie Laurens' Cynster series but have also started her Bastion Club books at the same time.

Yes. I was disappointed in his book as well. Violet was a difficult character to like and I didn't feel her chemistry with Daniel. They were more like brother and sister than lovers.

Yes. I was disa..."
Oh, yes! exactly. I kept trying to make myself like her...but I just couldn't!

The Hathaways Lisa Kleypas
I love this family They are quirky and funny. Lisa made them jump off the page and into my heart.
The Wallflowers Lisa Kleypas
The friendship with these girls is so endearing. This series, to me, was more about the bonding with your best friends. Although Sebastian is another bad boy that I LURVEEEE.
Pennyroyal Green Julie Anne Long
The Men is this family SWOONERIFIC. Just Sayin. If I had a Narnia Closet this is the place I would visit.
Rules for the Reckless Merideth Duran
The Hero's in this series are that perfect mix of the bad boy with a good heart. Merideth seems to pair these men with some tough woman that do not back down from these strong men.
*Have you read all the books in the series or are there more to go? Is it getting better or more watered down as you go on?
I haven't finished

Kerrigan Byrne is an author I am curious about.
Teresa Medeirosis another author with series I would like to start.

Any hard and fast series rules like you have to start with #1, no jumping around, read series one after another, etc.
No Rules!! I have broken them all.....

The Scandals series by Caroline Linden (LOVE LOVE LOVE)
Lessons in Love series by Suzanne Enoch
Scandalous Brides series by Suzanne Enoch
The Hathaways by Lisa Kleypas
The Prince Catchers by Katharine Ashe
The Bridgertons by Julia Quinn
The Brides of Kinfairlie by Claire Delacroix
Magic Series by Patricia Rice
Devine & Friends by Olivia Parker
Pennyroyal Green by Julie Anne Long
Akora by Josie Litton
Merry Widows by Candice Hern
The Lost Lords of Pembrooke by Lorraine Heath
Prelude to a Kiss by Erin Knightley
Gentlemen Next Door by Cecilia Gray
The Untouchables by Darcy Burke
Well...as I list all these out, I realized just how many of of my favorites are part of a series. I love to be immersed in an author's world they create and revisit characters. It enhances the reading experience :)
As for rules, I often stumble on a series in the middle. If I enjoy it, I will then go back and read all the books in order from then on. If it is an author I love, I'll most likely read them in order. My rule is that if I am reading a series, I won't get rid of a book (even if I don't like it) until I have read the entire series so I can go back and check details if need be. Once the series is complete, I'll keep my faves and get rid of any I didn't love.
Man---there are so many great stories on this list. I need to go back and read some of these :)

I want to try all of Elizabeth Hoyt's series. I have all of The Four Soldiers downloaded on my mp3, but the narrator is just awful.
@Lauren - I was intrigued as to how Hoyt could redeem Val enough to get me to care. I thought she did a great job in not totally redeeming him, but in making him fascinating.
@Gio - Will it spoil anything if I read Love in the Afternoon (The Hathaways, #5) before the prior books in the series? I want to meet her animals and would be willing to read out of order :)

What are some of your favourite series and why?
Malory-Anderson saga by Johanna Lindsey.
This is the first HR series I read. I love them because the Malorys are fiercely loyal and extremely protective of each other (more so with their women). They seem to boldly march through scandals, tavern brawls and fights.
Bridgerton Series by Julia Quinn.
Love is the word that comes to my mind. There is so much love in this family. Also I love it for the witty dialogue.
Wallflower's series by Lisa Kleypas. This I love mostly for its heroes:)
Have you read all the books in the series or are there more to go? Is it getting watered down as you go on?
I read all the books written so far in those series. There is a new book in Malory series to be released this year.
I didn't like the 11th book in Malory- Anderson series as much as the previous books.
Favourite characters in the series?
James Malory, Jeremy Malory and Amy Malory from the Malory series. Amy knew what she wanted and did her best to get him.
Simon from The Duke and I, Hyacinth from It's in His Kiss are my favourite characters. But my favourite couple is Colin Bridgerton and Penelope. Colin is adorable with his sense of humour, ready wit and most of all, his love of food:)
Westcliff is my favourite Lisa Kleypas hero.
Any series you are dying to start?
Bedwyn saga by Mary Balogh.
Also I would like to re read A Loving Scoundrel and The Bridgertons series.
Any Hard and Fast rules?.......
Yes. I always read a series in order when I read it for the first time. If I happen to read any book out of order due to availability issues, I re read it in order again.

The Scandals series by Caroline Linden (LOVE LOVE LOVE)

Becca, that is looong list of series. I wrote them down to try at a later date. Thank you.

I do the same! If I find a new book, I check on GR if it is a part of the series.
I don't think reading Love in the Afternoon would spoil the previous books for you. But if you would like to meet her animals, you should read books#3 and #4 too. Her animals are featured in important scenes in those books.

Any time! I surprised myself when I started that list! Apparently, I am a lover of series and I didn't even know it :) If you have questions about any of them, feel free to PM me or post a question on my profile!

I am gonna say yes/maybe, but I would not let it stop me if I wanted to start there. The book by itself would make me want to go back and read the rest.
If you absolutely hate spoilers than I would start with my second favorite which is Mine Till Midnight.
Cam is a wonderful Hero and Amelia is the big sister everyone needs.

I too am a great fan of series. I have been reading HR for only 3 years now. So I need suggestions from time to time. Thank you for offering to help.

*What are some of your favorite series and why?*
Many...Many...Many... Depend on moods. Sometime I prefer all fun & chase. Sometime my soul seek da twisted darkness :D (suggesting beside the famous one, which all books I love)
Lord of Vice by Alexandra Hawkins
(7 best friends, devilishly handsome &very very WICKED. If in mood of bad boys...Go for it)
Hathway Series by Lisa Kleypas
(Siblings bond, dashing heroes, And Lisa)
Runaway Brides by Celeste Bradley

Winter Garden & Dukes Series by Adele Ashworth
(Adele is love)
Fitzhug Series by Sherry Thomas

Rescued from Ruin by Elisa Braden
(Amazing)
All da series by Mary Balogh, Lisa Kleypas, Sarah MacLean, Lorraine Heath,
-------
*Have you read all the books in the series or are there more to go? Is it getting better or more watered down as you go on?*
ALL... it depends. There is always a character in a series which tempt us, brooding duke or some secret past. If the writer makes that book last, I follow da series religiously. But if da last charcter hold not that much interest(which happen seldom), I forgt about dt book.
----
Favorite characters in the series or any series?
The Good One who shoulders hold all the weight or the very Bad One who is behind all da fuss. There is no in between ;)
Any series you are dying to start? Or to get back to or to finish?
Waiting eagerly for Sarah & Lorraine Next book.
------
Any hard and fast series rules like you have to start with #1, no jumping around, read series one after another, etc.
No Rules, but from my experience if you are trying a new author, avoid the first book. Because on first book writer focus on introducing all charcters and sometime it turned out boring and messy. Choose da book which review/plot interest you. And than go for the first one.
Big NO for the longest series. I hate when the writer ruin a series by forcefully adding new chatacters & extend it to 10 or more books. 5 to 8 is just ok.
P.S- Kisses & Hugs for such a delicious topic.

I knew you'd appreciate that series mention by Enoch! I am going to admit that I went and bought his book so I could revisit that scene where he ties the cravat around his head to keep his brain in his skull when he is hung over. Haha...he was such a character. Other series I mentioned are great, but they are also very different in steam level, adventure level, and topic. Let me know if you have any questions :)

Can I clone myself so I can read multiple series at the same time, while all the enjoyment is for the real me?

Here are my top [however many]:
What are some of your favorite series and why?
The Brothers Sinister by Courtney Milan
Spymasters by Jo Bourne
Silk Trilogy by Mary Jo Putney
Mallorens by Jo Beverley
Company of Rouges by Jo Beverley is a good, long series if you want to jump in and read a ton of books by one author. For me, the first 6 or so books were better than the later ones.

You're gonna convince me to finish this series, aren't you?
Yes:) Thought the series is about a group of women, I love the Heroes more than the heroines.
I hope you like them enough to finish the series.

Thanks Steph,
Researching Now!!

Really, any and all series by Courtney Milan. She is the best. Her characters and stories always feel real to me, while they manage to still get to their HEA.
Love the Survivor's Club series by Mary Balogh. Has anyone mentioned that one yet?
still not done...
Roxton Series by Lucinda Brant. (Georgian time period; pretty heavy in parts. Brant writes mysteries too, and that bleeds over into this series.)
Falcon Club by Katharine Ashe
Mistress Trilogy by Mary Balogh

What are some of your favorite series and why?
I loved the Bridgertons, Wallflowers, The Hathaways, Bow Street Runners, Gamblers, Cousins O'Dwyer (Which is not Historical Romace) I have loved what I have read of the Ravenals!!!

I am getting ready to start the Splendid series (Just studying for finals right now, so no fun reading at the moment)
Favorite characters in the series or any series?

I think Splendid is the first book written by Julia Quinn. I like this series but I love Bridgertons.
I am hoping to work on my series in August. I overloaded my reading in July and hope to be more rational on what I can participate in next month.
This month I did get up to date on Meredith Duran's Rules for the Reckless series.
I really like The Winter Bride, just as much as The Spring Bride. The Hero is very patient and kind. And at first I thought the heroine's reticence was going to be due to a typical reason, but it's not and I felt for her very much.
I like Talk to me Sweetly. Plus it's a a novella and a quick read.

I think after Duke of Pleasure, you are all caught up. The last novel and two novellas are released this year October, November and December.

I've now pre-ordered all of them :) I've been enjoying getting lost in this series.

Impressive!

Fabulous! Well done, Jan!

I've read all of Judith McNaught and Julie Garwood's HR/Highlander books.
I've completed three series surrounding the Banks family by Rose Gordon back in 2015. I have all of them on audio, too. Scandalous Sisters Series, Groom Series, and the Banks Brothers Brides.
Valerie Bowman's Playful Brides was my favorite series of 2016. I've read up to Book 5 (out of 8). Book 7 is the only remaining of the three that's sounds interesting, so I may not finish this series.
Christi Caldwell's Heart of a Duke (completed 11 out 14) and Scandalous Seasons series (completed) were another favorite of mine back in 2015-16. However, I feel the H/h in the recent books have no connection to the characters in earlier books that I feel I'm no longer reading a book from the Heart of a Duke series. She has two side female characters (Beatrice and Chloe) from her earlier books that deserves their own books before these other heroines in Books 8-13. I'm patiently waiting for their books to be published.
After reading and enjoying Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase, I wanted to complete the Carsington Brothers series. Sadly, none of her books can ever be as great as Lord of Scoundrels and so I have given up on completing the series after the first book. I won't be reading any more books by Loretta Chase for a while.
I have one more book to read in Eloisa James's Essex Sisters series. However, since I didn't enjoy the first three books back in 2015, I'm reluctant to get started on Josie's book. The reviews for the book weren't that high either. Based on this series, I'm reluctant to read another EJ book.
I plan to finish the Bridgerton series one day. I've read 4 out of the 8 books.
I've read most of the books in the series mentioned above in order. However, if the synopsis for the first book doesn't catch my interest, then I move on the next book that is interesting and begin reading from there. The Bridgerton and the Hathaway series are two of the series where I've read out of order along with the Maiden Lane series.
I've read a three books from Elizabeth Hoyt's Maiden Lane series. I don't think I'll continue reading any more books from this series, because I feel that the books contains a side story that carries onto the next book, and I don't have the time to read the other books in the series that are of no interest to me. Dearest Rogue was the first book I read (without knowing it was part of a series). (view spoiler)
I completed the McCabe trilogy by Maya Banks and I hope to finish Jennifer Ashley's McKenzies and McBrides series one day. Ian Mackenzie is one of my favorite characters from this series. He's the hero from the first book and so I like to read the other books just for a glimpse of him. XD

I've not heard of this author. Will check her out.
Valerie Bowman's Playful Brides was my favorite series of 2016.
I have book #1 on my TBR. Sounds like I should move it up!
I have one more book to read in Eloisa James's Essex Sisters series. However, since I didn't enjoy the first three books back in 2015, I'm reluctant to get started on Josie's book.
Eloisa James is very hit and miss for me. Actually, she is more miss than hit so I've also given up on this series.
Re Maiden Lane - yes, the story arc is ongoing from the first book. I love this series so I highly recommend going back and reading from the beginning to get all of the backstory. Specifically for Phoebe, (view spoiler)

Definitely check out Rose Gordon, a hidden gem in my opinion. She is a very good writer and her books are reasonably priced, at least last I checked.

No, you're not the only one. I don't think they're as good as the earlier ones. Definitely not memorable for me. Each time a new book of hers gets published and I read the names of the H/h, my first thought is, "Who are these people?" I personally feel that a series should be about the characters from the earlier books. Otherwise, I'd lose interest.

I have them (the books mentioned above) on audio, so I get to listen to them once in a while. : )

What are some of your favorite series and why?
There are many reasons why I love both of these series, but my brain is only minimally cooperating tonight. When I read a book I usually get very invested emotionally and I think part of the attraction is that I want to know these people, to somehow be a part of their lives. Also, a lot of times my favorite is the one I'm currently reading.
Jennifer Ashley MacKenzies and McBrides
Well, who wouldn't be attracted to the MacKenzie and McBride men, catnip all the way. Each developed into such a different personality, and attracted strong, independent women.
Elizabeth Hoyt Maiden Lane
I loved most of the characters and the settings. I wished for more of the Ghost of St. Giles and the foundling home, but I haven't finished the series and I know they'll be showing up again. And like Ally, I loved how each chapter told more of the fable that related to the book.
Another book that has become a recent favorite is The Soldier's Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian. It's a historical m/m romance that had me caught up from page one.
Have you read all the books in the series or are there more to go? Is it getting better or more watered down as you go on?
I haven't finished either series. There are so many books I want to read, and what I'm in the mood for changes, and I keep starting new series.
Ashley - I'm on #8, The Stolen Mackenzie Bride
Hoyt - I'm on #11, Duke of Pleasure
Favorite characters in the series or any series?
Ian MacKenzie and Elliot McBride. I have a thing for damaged heroes, whether it's a physical or mental condition. As long as it's not the 'been betrayed, can't trust again' trope. I have to admit that while I loved Daniel in all his appearances in previous books, I didn't care for his book, The Wicked Deeds of Daniel Mackenzie.
Artemis Greaves, she's such a strong character. But I love Silence and Charming Mickey's story. And I had so much fun with Apollo and Lily.
Any series you are dying to start? Or to get back to or to finish?
Too many to list!
Any hard and fast series rules like you have to start with #1, no jumping around, read series one after another, etc.
I have accidentally started in the middle of a series, which I really don't like. Now I try and be sure I start with the first book. If I get too much of an idea of how a couple ended up together I lose interest in reading their book.
How many books of a series that I read in a row depends on the series. Some I go through as many as I can get ahold of while others need to be spaced out. Luckily some authors have family or relationship trees on their website which helps me reconnect (along with reading the summary and some reviews). The one thing about spacing the books out - I get characters confused between what series they were in, especially when there's a similar situation.
