Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Okay guys, if everyone reads/finishes the books they`ve said they could do for part two, then we`ll have enough to complete that part. We`re looking good for our UNO cards too with only 19 left now.

This is important though! I have to write the reason the book works for each task in the spreadsheet. So, for example, if you wrote ``this book works for Read a book with a young man as the main character`` I need to know his name. So please be specific :D

After you read a book, if you could add more tasks that will work that would be great too. We have several books with the same single task (young man/woman as protagonist and first published in July)

If you don`t think you are actually going to get to a book you said for Part 2, that`s fine, but please let me know ASAP.

Jess (jesscatt) | 116 comments Good job, everyone!

Thanks Caroline and Kate S for keeping us on track :)

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Okay guys we are pretty much finished with Part 2 of the challenge!

We have 17 choices marked out (2 backups), with 12 of the chosen books already completed and the remaining 5 marked as currently reading. We only need 3 of those 5 remaining books to be finished and we are done! Nice work team!

Also we are down to 14 UNO cards left.

Now we just need to get cracking on Part 1 on the mini-challenge. Jess gave me an excellent idea when she said she was going to look at what other teams were doing for the mini-challenge. This lead me to check out our Valentine team`s challenge spreadsheet and I found two books that will work for me. There are probably a dozen books they`ve read in the last week that aren`t part of their UNO card spread. Very helpful.

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Ashlee wrote: "Are we able to read what they read after the mini challenge started?"

Yes, as long as they finish it in February then it`ll count

message 156: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 116 comments When exactly does the mini challenge/February end? I know Feb started at like 6pm Feb 1st for my timezone and again at like 6pm for the mini challenge, so I was wondering if the same applies for when it ticks over to March?

message 157: by Caroline (last edited Feb 25, 2017 02:39AM) (new)

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments It'll be the same - Here is the official countdown clock

That being said, everyone needs to have their comments fully updated by then (at the absolute latest) as well. Kate and I have 24 hours after that to lock in our spreadsheet. Changes afterwards won't be accepted.

make sure your books are on your UNO shelves as well!

message 158: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 116 comments Thanks :)
I'll be sure to update Goodreads and this thread asap when I'm finishing my books over the next few days so hopefully you won't have heaps of work to do last minute lol.

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Glad to see everyone is so enthusiastic about getting March off to a good start.

I have one important announcement for March. This month we will have 8 special color cards included with our regular UNO cards.

We will have a:
7 Green
2 Yellow
8 Blue
7 Red
1 Yellow
5 Red
2 Blue
5 Green

This means that in addition to meeting the criteria for the number, the cover for the book used (whichever edition you are using is fine) also has to be 50% or more of that color. These cards are worth an extra 10 points and are scattered throughout our hands, so it`s very important that we finish them.

Some books, like The Help are very obvious for what color they are. If you`re unsure of a book you can use this website here. The shade of the color doesn`t matter.

So when you are writing the UNO cards for your March books please write the color underneath any books that will work as well. Let me know if you have any questions.

message 180: by Kate S (new)

Kate S The March Mini-Challenge is now up!

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

We can't start reading for this until the 15th (countdown clock: here), but that doesn't mean we can't start planning for this next point boost!

message 181: by Caroline (last edited Mar 26, 2017 07:57PM) (new)

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Okay! So the mini-challenge has two parts again this month and we`re going to run it pretty much like we did last month. This time we only need to read 16 books to finish PART 1 of this challenge.

All normal UNO rules apply and books can again be counted for both the mini-challenge and a normal UNO card (so please update your original comments as necessary for that). Only books started after the mini-challenge begins will count towards it (see Kate`s above comment).

PART 1 As a team
This has three parts:

1. Read 5 books by an author of one of the team names for 15 points each
Note: Individual team members can only read each author once. It is ok if more than one team member reads the same author. So both Kate and I could read two Gaimen books together, but Kate herself couldn`t read two.

♣ The authors are: J. D. Robb, Emily Brontë, Patricia Briggs, Agatha Christie, Jane Austen, Abigail Roux, Madeleine Urban, Markus Zusak, J.K. Rowling, Suzanne Collins, Ilona Andrews, Dan Brown, Andy Weir, Jim Butcher, Paula Hawkins, Stephen King, Fredrick Backman, John Green, Richelle Mead, Julia Quinn, Sophie Kinsella, Jojo Moyes, Neil Gaimen, Jeaniene Frost, and last but not least William Goldman.

2. Read one book that is one of the team names for 30 points
Note: Where a team name is a series book, only book 1 of the series can count for this part

♣ The books are: Pride and Prejudice, Stardust, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, The Princess Bride, Moon Called, Vampire Academy, Cut & Run, Wuthering Heights, The Shining, Naked in Death, The Book Thief, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Hunger Games, Magic Bites, The Da Vinci Code, The Martian, Storm Front, The Girl on the Train, A Man Called Ove, The Fault in Our Stars, Because of Miss Bridgerton, Me Before You, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Halfway to the Grave

3. Scavenger hunt character names in books. Find the first name of one of the characters from our team names for 5 points each. One name per book, maximum of 10 books. Each name must be different (i.e. 10 different names need to be 'hunted')

♣The names are: Augustus Waters, Becky Bloomwood, Bones, Buttercup, Elizabeth Bennet, Eve Dallas, Harry Dresden, Heathcliff, Hercule Poirot, Jack Torrance, Kate Daniels, Liesel Meminger, Mark Watney, Mercy Thompson, Ove, Peeta Mellark, Rachel Watson, Robert Langdon, Ron Weasley, Rose Hathaway, Sybilla (Billie) Bridgerton, Ty & Zane, Will Traynor, and Yvaine

Where one of our team names is a series book, you can take a character from any book within that series. For example, if you find Sirius that is ok as that is from Harry Potter (Team Ron Weasley) <----- IMPORTANT

♣ "Characters" means as per usual UNO character rules. They do not need to be listed on GR (because most character's aren't)

♣ The name needs to be the name the character is known by. If they are known as two names in their book (Sybillia and Billie) you can find either. Where they are known as one name (Mercy, not Mercedes) you can only find the name they are known as

♣ The name needs to be in context as a proper name. So finding the word "bones" in a book which is not a persons name will not count

♣ You can read the books the names derive from to find a name if you like

♣ Only one name per book, but you can use the name more than once. So if 3 of your team want to read books that all have the name "Ron" in them that is ok

Progress report - I will cross out books as they are finished.

♣ Read 5 books by an author of one of the team names for 15 points each. MAX 5
Caroline: The Graveyard Book, Neil Gaiman
Kate: Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith
Kate: The Moving Finger by Agatha Christie
Emma: I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella
Jess: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

♣ Read one book that is one of the team names for 30 points. MAX 1
Ashlee: Me Before You

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments PART 2 Scrabble

♣ Create a word using the first and last letter of the team names - which words you use is up to the team - but they must be at least 4 letters long.
Read one book per letter of that word for 5 points per letter.
- 4p bonus for completed words with 7 or more letters
- 2p bonus for completed words with 5-6 letters

♣ You can only get points for one partially finished word, i.e. if you by the end of the month have more than 1 incomplete words, you will only get 5p/book for the first word.

♣ Example, PYRES (Yvaine is Y,E ; Buttercup is P, Kate Daniels is S, Rose Hathaway for R). Teams can complete this task more than once by creating new words, but you can't re-use letters or books already used.

♣ Normal "spell-it-out" rules apply. i.e. Letter needs to be the first letter in the book title, author first name or surname, character name or nickname, or setting. Articles (a/an/the) can be ignored in the book titles. For this spell-it-out, you can also use the first letter in the series name.

♣ This one is actually easier than it sounds as we can basically just take whatever books we read that don`t work for part 1 and then create words from there. The key here is just going to be to read AS MANY BOOKS AS POSSIBLE

Kate S Ashlee has Me Before You on her reading plan. That would work for the 30 point task. Ashlee are you still planning on reading that this month? Have you already started it?

Excellent - which books are those?

Also I`d like to recommend Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins for anyone who hasn`t read it. I thought it was just as good as The Hunger Games. It`s a 5 book series, but they are very quick reads

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Please remember to be on the lookout for a Red 7 when looking for books for our mini-challenge. That is our last color card :D

Ashlee | 370 comments Plays count as a read, correct? I am reading "Hamlet" with one of my students. I verified word count as 32,000 on arbookfind.

Emma Kerle | 51 comments I can read Confessions of a shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

message 193: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 116 comments I might as well go for the 30 point ones, hey? Since I have a few of those on my to-read list anyway.

There's no restrictions on that part? Ie a book can only be read by one person? I'm thinking I'll just take a look at the local library website and see which books I can get a hold of the quickest haha.

message 194: by Caroline (last edited Mar 14, 2017 06:04AM) (new)

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments So the 30 point one has a max of 1. While I think it's always good to have a backup, there are also other areas to look at. Right now we need one more book for the part 1 of part 1 and 7 more for the scavenger hunt.

As for part 2, we need to basically read as many books as possible there.

So, if you're looking for some kind of guidelines going forward I would say: read as many short books as possible. Any books not used for part one we WILL be able to use for part two

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Okay guys the mini-challenge starts in about 8 hours so remember that nothing marked as `currently-reading` or `read` will count before that.

Our plan for part 1 is looking good and I want to clarify for part 2. Any book you read starting from this evening to the end of the month can be used for part 2 as long as it`s not used for part 1. We will be using most of the letters from the alphabet for this, so going forward we need you guys to write the title, authors, main location, and all characters regardless of the starting letter. All other standard UNO rules apply, with one exception: the first letter of the series name can also be used here.

So for example I have Lord of Light on my reading list like this: 0 (Author: Zelzany), 2 (Character: Tak), 6 (Character: Sam), Skip (Character: Kali), but I can add L (title), Y (Character: Yama), R (Character: Ratri), and M (Location: Mars) to the list.

As part two has 1 L, 2 Ms, 6 Rs, and 4 Ys we can use, this is very helpful. The more specific you guys are the more helpful it is to me and Kate. If you write down one character name and no location, then Kate and I will have to try and track the remaining information down for books we`ve haven`t read.

As for our regular UNO cards we`ve got 59 left to go and I have every confidence we are going to hit that goal! Luckily we`ll only need 5 more books above that to 100% finish the mini-challenge too :D

Now last but not least: let`s find that RED 7!

message 197: by Jess (new)

Jess (jesscatt) | 116 comments Red 7! I think I'll have to scour my bookshelves today and see if I can find that red 7.

I'm all cleared up on the mini challenge rules now and I'll update once I get my hands on some candidates today :) come on mini-challenge start time lol

Jess (jesscatt) | 116 comments Dracula by Bram Stoker this copy I have is 56% Bordeaux (red) according to the TinEye results. There's a character called Van Helsing. I can do a reread of this one (hardly a chore since it's one of my favourites) and knock out our red 7. Sound like a plan?
