Random in Death
by J.D. Robb

This one starts sad with murder of an innocent, a likable one. Dallas says, "I can't bring her back but I can bring her justice." To me that is great summary of her attitude which is part of why, almost 60 books in, I'm still reading this series both in audio and in print.

Alice | 756 comments I finished Switchboard Soldiers Switchboard Soldiers by Jennifer Chiaverini by Jennifer Chiaverini. My favorite book of the year. Set in 1918, the women who were switchboard operators in the US sign up with military and go to France to handle the switchboards during WWI. Excellent research and characters are well written.

Zermeena | 725 comments I read The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna . I thought it was overrated and gave it 3 stars. The story was predictable and blah. And I found the title somewhat misleading.

I also listened to Circle of Quilters Circle of Quilters (Elm Creek Quilts, #9) by Jennifer Chiaverini for the third time. This is book I love and reread for a challenge. It is always good to visit the Elm Creek quilters and spend time with them. This series inspired me to learn how to quilt.

In this book, Jack is trying to keep 3 CPAs safe in the wilderness of Yosemite from the assassins trying to kill them before they can testify at a trial. A slow burn thriller that is hard to put down.

The first half was a little slow and plotted but the second half was excellent. The romance is swoony and funny once again.

What does 'cozy adjacent' mean? I really like that series, but have always struggled over its genre.

message 1778: by Mark (new)

Mark Baker (carstairs38) | 1278 comments Not sure which series you are talking about, but for me, cozy adjacent would be something that is a little gray. Maybe the tone is a little more serious than is typical in a cozy. Maybe there's a little more violence or the main character is a professional. Or the romance gets a little steamier without getting graphic.

This series is usually classified as historical mystery.

I've seen these mysteries described as 'soft-boiled'.

So being a historical mystery means it can't be a cozy too? There are plenty of series that I would call historical cozies - first to mind is Rhys Bowen's Royal Spyness series.

I was questioning the label of 'cozy adjacent' for the Veronica Speedwell series. Not sure why, but I've never really considered those books to be cozies, maybe because of all the... scrapes? that Stoker gets into? That doesn't usually happen in most of the straight-out cozies that I read :)

message 1782: by L J (new)

L J | 714 comments Barb wrote: "What does 'cozy adjacent' mean? I really like that series, but have always struggled over its genre."

I mostly see 'cozy adjacent' used when the book is fantasy series novel (not cozy mystery with fantasy elements) that includes a cozy mystery as one of the plotlines. To me Veronica Speedwell series is historical mystery.

The Victorian time period has become associated with Steampunk SF and I've read some of those that are also mystery books. Maybe someone thought Victorian=Steampunk SF.

I think the term cozy is overused when marketing mystery novels.

Of course historical mysteries can also be cozies. The genre has never depended on time periods. Traditional/cozy mystery awards like Agatha and Lefty include a historical mystery category.

I was referring to the genre listings for these books on the GR book pages. As I understand it, the categories are based on members' shelves.
