R14: Team #16 ~ Read it and Weep

Book: Etched in Bone
How: The Others is listed on Best Of List for UF
Date Finished: 3/16/17
Rating: 4.5 stars
Another great installment to one of my favorite series ever! We really got to know a lot of other characters in the series, more of the policing characters, other Others, and more of the human pack. For a while we don't even hear from Meg or Simon, the full middle of the book seemed void of them. But when we did get them, it was definitely worth it! It dragged a little in the middle, sometimes we received too many details for mundane things like trade agreements, food rations, etc. So that's why I skimmed half a star off. I loved Mrs. Twyla and how she mothered everybody, especially Skippy. Another strong addition to a series that I beliveve is sadly coming to an end soon!

Review:
This was a strong start to this trilogy. Justine was such an interesting character and I loved reading her moments of hypochondria, see her cope with a new world, and enjoyed her shenanigans. Justine also reminded me a lot of Georgina Kincaid from Succubus Blues. Just something about her character.
The premise was super interesting and very original. People with phobias or addictions be able to push those right into someone else to give themselves a reprieve and manipulate others. I have to admit I spent some time confused by some of the worldbuilding mostly because I didn't know if I should believe it because Justine seemed really confused for the first half. Ialso put this one off for a while because the blurb deescribes a love triangle which actually ends up being a square. It was done in the sense that i didnt really get sold on any of the guys so what do I care if she gets it on as frequently as she'd like?
I definitely have more questions about the high caps and some of the worldbuilding that was introduced. I'm definitely up for reading book 2.

Final Thoughts:
I just could not get into this one. The humor was a little OTT and not in a good way. Some authors can pull it off and some fall flat. This book is an example of the latter. I didn't laugh a single time through the whole thing. And the narrator was awful. Tommy sounded more like a girl than Jody did. Either that or a prepubescent boy. Plus he acted like such a wimp most of the time. I just could not take him seriously. I much preferred the author's book A Dirty Job. I will not continue this series.

Good to know about that Cliffy! That sucks but at least it's fully published! I also appreciate that it's only three books in the series.

How to Run with a Naked Werewolf by Molly Harper
Finished: March 18
Rating: 4 Stars
The focus in this installment of the series is primarily on Anna and Caleb's relationship as it grows from wariness, to trust, to intimacy and to love. Most of the action takes place on the road away from Grundy and the rest of the pack.
Anna is a resilient heroine and the details of the abuse that she suffered, both mental and physical, evoke a range of emotions on the part of the reader - horror, anger, admiration and pride at her taking control of her life once again.
Caleb is simply scrumptious. An incredible mix of physical strength combined with a tender gentleness when it comes to his feelings for Anna make him a truly wonderful hero.
The story is engaging and Harper manages to avoid all the pitfalls that could become irritating, such as the silly misunderstanding trope. My only caveat is that (view spoiler) . My blood thirstiness is not appeased!
Amanda Ronconi's narration is entertaining and engaging. She presents both the humor as well as the more serious moments with just the right tone.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

I give this 4 ½ stars it was really good kind of a slow start but it does not finish on one, I need the next book like now. I want to know more about what Paige is now and what she may become. Also is it bad that my favorite thing out of the whole book is that sword (Pooky Bear) who names a sword that anyway. I know it was a joke but come on, I can see why the sword would be a little bit testy after that. I hope in this last book there will be some epic battling there was some in this one and I think Penryn had a lot of help from the sword when it came to this. I have some more conflicting thoughts about man or daughters of men vs angels and god and what not but I don't want it to be a rant so I will keep it at this.

Bound by Night by Larissa Ione
Finished: March 24
Rating: 3 Stars
Larisa Ione's take on vampires and vampirism is original. However, there are some illogical elements in her world building, and the romance between Nicole and Riker does not ring true.
The idea that humans have enslaved vampires in interesting, yet Ione fails to explain how exactly the physically weaker race of humans managed to subjugate the stronger species. Moreover, Ione does not provide sufficient details on the exact origin and nature of vampires.
Nicole and Riker's relationship is just as confusing. They go from hating the sight of one another to falling in love in the blink of an eye. One night out in the woods on the run from poachers and they get over decades of prejudice and mistaken beliefs. I don't think so!
There are just as many inconsistencies in the development of the secondary characters and the villains are very one dimensional.
All in all, this is not one of Ione's better books. Nevertheless, there is a lot of creativity and potential in the premise and I'm willing to give book #2 a chance to compensate for the shortcomings of this one.

I give it about a 3.5 star rating not as good as the first one and I am thinking the next book is going to be amazing. There is a lot happening we are in the roman camp now and seeing what happened to Percy. Frank and Hazel are introduced and I am very intrigued with their stories I am wondering where they will go in all this. I hope Hazel makes it and isn't fated to go where she thinks she is. I am still a little confused on the Roman Gods compared to the Greek ones do they forget things when they are the other or are they just playing stupid really? Ares/ Mars seemed like one in the same yet did not seem to know Percy or pretended not to. The next one I am excited for because now we get to see if the Greek and Roman camps can work together.

This one was a tough one for me. I just could not get into it at all. So because of that I had a really tough time finishing. Even thought the audio narration was decent. I hated what a weak ruler Freyrik was. He was too preoccupied with what everybody else would think. And I also hated that every single human in this story was an asshole. Why couldn't they for the most part be decent people with just a few bad seeds like most stories? Idk. I just was not a fan of this book and do not plan on reading the next book despite the cliffhanger.

I will start doing that! I just hit ignore but it's just weird to me because I've never had that on GR before!

I love this world. I've read steampunk before and it was interesting enough to return to. There's only been one other series I've read so far in my very early steampunk romance career that I've loved which is the Immortal Empire series by Kate Locke. Iron Seas is definitely on that list. Such a colorful world and great multi-dimensional characters. So why 4.5 stars instead of 5? Well it moved a little slow in the beginning. For some time in the beginning, our hero and heroine hadn't even interacted yet. There are also a lot of characters and I got a little turned around with all the name.
Yasmeen was a boss. She was like you are going to respect me, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. I was like yaaaaas Yasmeen. Every time a scene featured her POV:

Her backstory was actually a super painful one and I appreciate the author for taking us there. It was so real and authentic and not full of tropes.
I loved Archimedes. I found it refreshing to have a hero who knows that he wants to be with a heroine, he's not this reformed rake that wants to ravish the heroine and then be on his merry way. He had to convince her. I apprecaited that so much.
Great book, great series. Definitely ready for the next one!

I rate this a high 3.5 star. It had a good start I do want to continue on and know more about the series it answered some questions but also left some on the table to continue on with. I want to know more about this German speaking ghost that has taken up with her radio/CD player. I hope she will be able to understand him some time instead of just being confused on what he is saying, but he does come in handy. I also want to know more about the Shadows and what they really are other than all powerful all knowing. Something has to be able to hurt them other than others blocking their food source. Can we just beat up the brother a little bit, I understand people like that are pretty selfish but can he pull his head out of his ass for a second and see what is happening with his own sister, but then again maybe if he did she would be in more trouble of him finding out the truth. I hope we see more of Ti and he comes back, as well as Anna she is kinda cool for a vampire and Sike is kinda cool for a daytimer. For now.

I'm really enjoying this series. I love Myron's snark and sense of humor. The mysteries are good and not too complicated. Win is one of the best secondary characters ever. I would have his babies. I liked this book which wasn't a surprise. Not sure if I liked the fact that (view spoiler) I liked the way it ended and they were able to get the bone marrow to save the kid.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Club Dead by Charlaine Harris
Finished: March 30
Rating: 4 Stars
Although there are a host of new characters to keep track of in this installment, including a variety of vampires, werewolves, shifters and goblins, the plot is more cohesive with one storyline that is easy enough to follow.
As in the previous books, Sookie finds herself in some dicey situations, but manages to hold her own and even comes out on top despite being on the receiving end of stakes, fists and fangs.
In the romance department, it would seem that unlike human males, who view her as strange and unappealing, Sookie is like Catnip to supernatural men. Whether it is Bill or Eric or Alcide Herveaux, her charming travelling companion, Sookie is popular with vampires and werewolves alike. While Alcide's gentle, caring and protective nature (not to mention his heartbeat) gives him an advantage over Eric, the alpha-vampire is exceedingly sexy and also appears to be developing an emotional attachment to sweet Sookie. Regardless, both of these men are much more suitable love interests than the self-absorbed and slightly smarmy Bill.
In sum, this book clearly indicates that Harris is shifting focus away from Sookie and Bill's less than appealing attachment, and the new direction opens up far more intriguing avenues both for storylines and character development. Looking forward to the next book in which readers apparently learn more about Eric.

Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris
Finished: April 1st
Rating: 3.5 Stars
In the small (meaning barely inhabited) town of Midnight, Texas, nothing is as it first appears. Distrustful of outsiders and law enforcement, the quirky residents keep their own counsel and don't ask questions. Thus, when a barely identifiable body is discovered within town limits and one of their own is the prime suspect, the people of Midnight are determined to uncover the truth without exposing their own secrets.
Series note: Several of the characters are crossovers from other Harris series including Bobo Winthrop from Lily Bard, Manfred Bernardo from Harper Connelly and Arthur Smith from Aurora Teagarden. While it is not necessary to have read these series in order to understand and enjoy the book, reading them does provide background and insight into certain behaviors and motivations.
The first half of the story is dedicated to introducing the strange setting with its ghost-town like atmosphere and creepy yet oddly relatable and appealing characters. Consequently, the pacing is slow (perhaps even plodding) and readers who prefer fast and action packed scenes will be disappointed. Nevertheless, the shifting point of view and richly detailed characterization immerses the reader into the mysterious and enigmatic lives of the various residents.
The second half involves the murder investigation, but readers expecting an exciting police procedural will, once again, be disappointed as the style is more Agatha Christie than CSI. While there are numerous red herrings and some solid twists and turns, the ultimate revelation of the culprit sort of comes out of the blue, but only if one isn't really paying attention to the details.
In sum, Midnight Crossroads is an intriguing mix of the southern-gothic, mystery and urban fantasy genres that Charlaine Harris is so adept at writing. Nevertheless, newbies to her writing will not want to start with this series. To truly appreciate her work, one should start with either the Lily Bard or Harper Connelly books.

Review:
Another good addition to an auto buy series for me. I always enjoy diving into the world of Mercy, Adam, and crew.
Mercy is just so damn smart. I love her wit, she navigates the challenges she finds herself in so well. I also love her coyote/trickster ways. Mercy is definitely one of my favorite heroines in the genre. Adam was of course awesome. His love for Mercy resonates so much but I also love how he understands her, knows when to trust her, and kicks ass without trying to hold Mercy back "for her own protection". I really enjoyed hearing his POV and enjoy the new format of the last few books. I also liked getting a book that had the vampires in it. They are such a creepy element in this series. All their interactions with one another seems weird and on the edge of a knife but we got to see vampires - while always violent cause that's their nature - interacting in social, political settings. The usual roundabout mechanizations for a book with sneaky vampires abound but I love how Mercy and Adam handle it!
I really appreciated some worldbuilding in this book - we learn more about Mercy and her ability to interact with ghosts - that started to lag in the last few books. There was lots of plot and interesting story happening but not a lot of world building or new revelations that would last beyond a particular book. Perhaps there were new characters introduced or a new reference to a past event, but this is the first one in a while that I feel like expanded the world a little more. I'm excited to see it expand even more.
We also get a glimpse of that mischevious Coyote. Chaos and fun always prevails when he is around! So far still an autobuy, still a book that didn't last long enough at all!

This was a great book! I really enjoyed it though at times Rath felt too good to be true. My only complaint is that I wish it was steamier. Since all we got on page were some kisses. Since Rath was a rentboy I just expected sex to be a part of the story. But nope. Still a great book though and I loved Tress!
