I'm not sure if I could convince my sister, who lives in SLC to join a new book club. But I could ask if she's interested...most likely though with her schedule, I'm thinking maybe start of the year. I'll check with her and see. I can send a private message and let you know. I think it would be great for her to get involved in a club again.

Welcome aboard!

And welcome to those of you who have posted earlier :)

Literally Jen (vampsita) Hi Kari,

That would be great. I'm still looking, and have had no luck finding a new member(s) yet.

I emailed her (this is her day off today and she usually just checks from work) so might not hear back until tomorrow.

Hi, Vicki. Glad you joined. Happy reading.

message 306: by Ms.soule (new)

Ms.soule (mrssoule) My name is Rebecca, I live in Virginia, and just joined today in order to find more books to read. I've been a member of the Paranormal Romance group for a few months and really enjoy their challenges, but I want to read some non-paranormal books now and need some inspiration. The only thing that slows my reading down is my 3-year-old son who likes to sit beside me and bury his nose in a book (preferably the one I'm trying to read) "just like mommy's doin'."

message 307: by M (new)

M (masanobu) Hello! My name is Tamara, I'm 20 and I'm from Spain. Currently, I am a student trying to get a Science degree and also working in a lab, where I diagnose hereditary diseases.
I -obviously- love reading. I'm in too many bookclubs, but I couldn't resist this creative challenge! I just hope my (not-so-good) English won't get in the way. :)

My son learned to read in self-defense. He was reading "Early Readers" by himself at age 3. By start of Kindergarten, he was reading 2nd grade level. Maybe your boy will do something similar.

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Hiyo! I'm Meg, a 25-yr-old teacher from PA. I've been reading anything Childrens/YA I can find since 2006 so I can have lists of things to recommend to my students when they whine, "I don't like reading!" or "I don't know what to read!"

I just saw this and looked at the challenge for fall, and I think it sounds awesome! I'm far behind, so I think I'll keep track just for myself this time, but I look forward in formally joining in the next one!

Hey Meg! I love YA too! I am 21, and probably should have grown out this at this point, but I can't help it! And now, it is as though Borders realized I should move to another genre because they moved the YA section from the back of the store, to the very front, in front of all of the other sections!

If you like YA, I belong to two wonderful YA groups here on Goodreads. One group is a challenge group that reads books recommended in The Ultimate Teen Book Guide by Daniel Hahn The Ultimate Teen Book Guide. It just started this month. The other started over the summer and has a couple of group reads a month. This is a strictly adult group for teachers and other adults. I'll post the links in case you're interested. We have several members of this challenge who belong.

Sue Hi, I'm Sue---48, in SE Pennsy. I just happened to stumble on this group, and it looks like such fun. The questionaire about whether this group is for me---the clincher.

message 314: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 172 comments Hi, I'm Melissa, 40, and never done this sort of thing before. Never joined a group on GR before. So forgive my newbie-ness! But sounds like a lot of fun as I tend to get stuck in reading ruts - same author, same genre over and over. Lots of great ideas to try new things.

So, I know I am jumping in mid-stream, but I am between books anyway so no time like the present, eh?

message 315: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments Sue and Melissa, don't worry about jumping in in the middle, lots are doing it. And you can count any book you've read since Sept. 1 that will fit any of the tasks. Feel free to use any of the specific task boards for help.
Have fun!

message 316: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (goodreadscomkeridwynn) | 185 comments Welcome Sue and Melissa. I've seen a lot of folks coming into this pretty recently. And like Donna Jo said, you can count books read since Sept. 1 if they fit the tasks. This is my first challenge and first time on GR as well and I can tell you that everyone is very friendly and helpful. So don't be shy if you have questions. Just ask. :)

message 317: by Traci (new)

Traci Marquette (tracimarquette) | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Traci and I live in AZ with my parents and three dogs. I am looking forward to doing the challenges that are presented here.

message 318: by Asho (new)

Asho | 181 comments Hello everyone! I'm Ashley. I'm a full-time graduate student and very busy with research and dissertation writing at the moment, but I'd really like to start reading more novels. I used to be a book-a-day kind of girl but in the past few years I've been reading way too many blogs and magazines and missing out on the joys of reading actual published books. I'm going to give this group a shot to see if the creative challenges will get me back into the habit of reading actual books again.
I'm jumping in very late on the Fall challenge, I realize, but luckily I found a way to use most of the books I've read since September (even some of the ones I've read for my research) and I think I still have time to tackle a few more challenges.
Thanks for being so open to having new members!

message 319: by Bunny (new)

Bunny (neonbunny) | 72 comments hi everyone! i'm bunny. i am a student- part-time this quarter, thanks to a scheduling mix-up, so i have lots of free time to read! (i'll be sad when i go back to a full load in january.) i started following the challenge at the beginning of october, using the tasks as a way to help me slowly work though my HUGE tbr pile. finding books to fit the tasks is so much fun and it really is helping me out- i have so many books that i have no idea what to read next, and this gives me a way to pick them!

message 320: by Erin (new)

Erin Hi everyone,
I'm in Alaska and am just starting my graduate work studying women writers. I think I'll be able to use quite a few books for these challenges!
I've never done a challenge before but am excited to see how much I can read - I've got several lists to work off of besides my school work.
This group sounds like a lot of fun! I can't wait to figure what I've read since Sept 1st that can count for this challenge - I hope I'm not far behind, I know I have a late start.
Ah well, better late than never :)

Cheers to reading!

message 321: by Krista (last edited Oct 25, 2009 04:11PM) (new)

Krista (kristac) | 130 comments Hello! My name is Krista. I am new to goodreads and now this group. I have read about some of the past challenges and am excited to participate in this winter edition!

I am 27 years old and recently married to my wonderful husband, Nathan. We live in south central KY. Besides reading, my hobbies include coaching youth sports teams, practicing bikram yoga, and participating in various church related events.

I also am a HUGE Disney World fanatic. I go every year at least once and collect Disney pins. This hobby takes up quite a bit of my time on the dizpins message boards, scoping EBAY and organizing my collection. If anyone is ever going to WDW or DL and is interested in this AWESOME, fairly inexpensive hobby, by all means contact me! I love to share my love for the hobby.

I have been reading quite a bit lately. Mostly because it's getting cooler and my husband has been working A LOT. I enjoy lots of different kinds of books-mystery, chick lit, fantasy, etc. My favorite book ever is A FINE BALANCE by Rohinton Mistry. Currently reading the SOOKIE STACKHOUSE novels by Charlaine Harris.

Look forward to making many friends on the boards!

message 322: by Sasha (new)

Sasha | 3 comments Hi everybody. I figured I should introduce myself since I'm finally have some completed tasks. My name is Sasha, I'm 26. I just joined goodreads in Sept and shortly after found the Seasonal Reading Challenge. I absolutely love this idea! The challenge helps me find books I would have never discovered otherwise. I love to read however I usually average 3 books every 2 months, and so far this challenge has pushed me to read 6 books in under 2 months. Some of my favorite authors are Barbara Kingsolver, Philippa Gregory, and Lucy Maud Montgomery.

message 323: by Elantriel (new)

Elantriel | 6 comments Hi all. My name is Mel, I am 23 and I am from Australia.

I work full time as an Engineering Assistant for a company that manufactures mining equipment. Most people mistake my title as me being an Engineer when in actual fact I am just an Admin Assistant with a fancy title....I know nothing about Engineering.

I am currently writing my first novel and hoping one day to get it published. Still far away from finish it though.

I LOVE to read. In high school I hated it with a passion, I think mainly because I hated being told what to read, but since leaving hight school I've found an obsession with reading. These days I cant walk into a bookstore without walking out with at least 2 to 3 books. My book shelves are getting very crouded.

Anyway happy to be here and I cant wait to start with the Winter (well for me its Summer) challenge.

message 324: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jessycfischer) Hello everyone. Jessica here from North Carolina, USA. I am an elementary school music teacher so read as much as I can between planning. I LOVE to read though.

I am a member of Busy as a Bee and got sick of reading about everyone doing this and finally decided to look it up myself. Looking forward to getting started.

Kathryn, I'm 21 as well at still read a lot of YA books. I don't remember there being nearly as many when I would have been interested in reading them. I don't think there's any problem with reading YA unless we're all worshiping at the feet of Stephenie Meyer and how awesome of an author she is.

lol, that is true. Right now I am working on Hunger Games. My problem is that whenever books get overwhelming praise by everyone I talk to, I get nervous about reading it and psych myself out about maybe not liking it. It is stupid!

message 327: by Katy (new)

Katy | 790 comments Hi all...I just sort of jumped right in and started reading and posting but now I'll say hi. I'm a teacher in New Jersey for the past 7 1/2 years. I love reading and I love any kind of challenge so I was really excited to find this group. Although my TBR list on GR is really short, I have a whole nerdy excel hundreds-of-books file on my computer of books I want to read and whether my library has them, etc, etc...so this is fun :)

Glad you found us, Gala. It is a lot of fun. The best way to start is, when Cynthia posts the Winter Tasks, print them out. Discover what books you have to hand; carry the list with you to the library/store. Set your goal based on what you think you can read in three months. The best thing is that many tasks will lead you to read books you would normally not lift from the shelf (and some you may never try again.) The next best thing is that you will have a legitimate reason to have a book in your hands while you are doing the dishes or dusting. ("I've got to finish this today; it's worth 15 points.")

Some of us read much faster than others, but don't be put off by that. Any number of challengees only read a few books each season because real life has a tendency to take more time than one would like.

message 330: by Heather (new)

Heather Thomas (5peasinapod) | 1 comments Yeah! I am so glad I found this group. I haven't made it on the computer for a few months and didn't find your fall challenge at TNBBC. Whew! That was a close one! Although I will be more tempted now with updating my status since it is so easy to find!

Elizabeth of Silver's Reviews (silversreviews) Hi:

I am Elizabeth...I would like to try the challenge, but am confused about the rules.

I read them but I guess I need to re-read them. :)

message 332: by Petra (new)

Petra Welcome, Elizabeth. You're just in time for the start of the Winter Challenge (Dec 1st). The new tasks will be posted by mid-November.
Feel free to ask any questions. You'll get lots of helpful answers.

Elizabeth of Silver's Reviews (silversreviews) Thanks for the welcome, Petra.

I hope I can do this while school is in session. :)

I may have to wait for summer. I guess I should just look around until December 1? Would that be best?

Will I get a message about the challenges? What happens if we don't meet them? :) :)

message 334: by Petra (new)

Petra The Challenge is for fun. You can set your own Goal or just try to complete as many as possible.
I find it to be a good way of choosing which book to read next. Also, everyone here has terrific suggestions of books to fit a particular challenge and it's made my TBR list (to-be-read) grow incredibly long.
The tasks will be listed here, probably under the Winter Challenge folder. You won't be notified so just keep checking.

Petra, you aim for the number of points or challenges you think you can finish in three months--and you can changed them at any time. If, for any reason, you can't read as much as you planned to or want to, you can just lower your own challenge points. Or if you find you are reading more books than you expected, you can raise your aim. You needn't notify anybody or make any kind of a formal contract.
This is just for fun. Some of us have more time to read than others; some are faster readers than others; all of us are ardent readers and that's all that counts.

Petra Donna, that's what I was trying to say. Sorry if it came across otherwise.

Kimb | 2 comments Hi, everyone, I live in California and am 44 years old. I just found and joined goodreads and am intrigued with this challenge. I can't wait to get started.

I joined so that I would not be reading just the same kinds of books over and over. I think hearing everyone else's comments on different books will open the door for me to try new ones.

Looking forward to making new friends and sharing ideas!!

I will read most types of books and I love challenging myself so I can't wait to get started.
