Felina | 0 comments Hi, I'm Felina. I am currently 25 years old. I live in Salt Lake City, UT and I hate my job.

During college I kind of lost my love for reading and have only recently gotten back into it. During highschool I was a Sci-fi/Fantasy freak and read everything I could get my hands on. I've recently been introduced to Historical Fiction which I'm really enjoying (Last Man in Rome rocks so far). And have unfortunately never read anything by Stephen King except Shawshank Redemption (which I don't think counts) so I intend to get him in on this challenge as much as possible.

In my spare time, when I'm not reading, I usually play WoW...alot. I am also a huge fan of The Office, 30 Rock, Parks & Recreation, How I Met Your Mother and Fringe.

I have two cats that I adore and am hopelessly single and I don't know if those facts are related. Anybody know any available guys in Salt Lake? Just kidding.

Nice to meet everybody. :)

I have a 19 year old son, too, who is at Oregon State University. What is your son studying? Mine is studying biomedical engineering (and I don't even know what that means LOL.) He is WAY smarter than me!

message 105: by Julia (new)

Julia (bambbles) | 114 comments I just have to say that I am LOVING reading all of these. I will wait a bit then come back and read everyones story.

PS I am also super excited for The Office.

There was something else too but I cant remember now. I got to caught up in all of your lives :)

message 106: by Laura (new)

Laura (laciesca) | 30 comments I'm Laura, and I live in Florida. I'm a stay at home mom to my 2 kids ages 5 and 2. I have always loved to read and read quite a bit (by myself and with my kids). My first challenge to participate in was this summer's challenge that is just wrapping up now. I loved participating in the challenge because i read and loved several books that i otherwise may not have picked up.

message 107: by Adanma (new)

Adanma Hello everyone!
I am Adanma and I am 15 years old. I am at A quite challenging boarding school in the north east and as a result I found little time to read last year. I have made it my goal to read more this year and since the seasons basically coincide with the beginning and end of my school terms I thought these challenges would be a useful measure of my reading.
I think this is a great idea and I can't wait to give the fall challenge a shot!

message 108: by Abigail (new)

Abigail | 315 comments Lyn, my great-grandfather founded Concord, CA! I actually live on the opposite coast now -- and grew up in the middle -- so I've never seen it, but I hear there's a Vargus Rd named after him somewhere in the center of town. Strangely enough, I now live one town over from Concord, MA... but there aren't any Vargus Rds out here. ;)

message 109: by Julie (new)

Julie Copeland Hi, My name is Julie and I live in Southeast Texas. I am happily married and have 4 children. I having been teaching Elementary for 6 years and I love to read. I have a shelf full of books that are just waiting to be read. I am hoping this group can challenge me and help me get motivated to read all those wonderful books.

Thanks!

message 110: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 54 comments Yay! Another challenge! The Summer Challenge on TNBBC helped me read tons of my shelf-sitters.

My name is Adrienne and I'm in Oklahoma. I work in a library. I also teach dance to teenage girls at my church. In my spare time I knit and crochet and cross stitch, but my favorite hobby is reading.

I'm really excited about this challenge. Come on September 1!

message 111: by Lauren H. (new)

Lauren H. (laurenahughes) | 15 comments Hi all,

I'm Lauren from Ontario, Canada. I am 22 and just finished my degree. This summer I have been working at my local public library as a literacy tutor for elementary students.
I participated in the Spring and Summer Challenges this year, however with my new full time job and a big move, the Summer Challenge has been rather neglected in recent weeks. People think that working at the library you must get to read a lot, but sadly this is not true!
I am looking forward to starting the Fall Challenge in full force.

Out here we spell it Vargas, and there are more things named Vargas than you can shake a stick at. What was your great grandfather's name?

message 113: by Tracy S (new)

Tracy S Hi everyone!
My name is Tracy. I am 30 years old, and I live in Florida with my husband, my English bulldog, and our two cats. I am a software developer by day.

I have just recently gotten back into reading on a regular basis, after being away from it for over 10 years! I recently joined goodreads and am having a great time adding books to my TBR shelf and reading everyone's comments.

I am looking forward to starting my first reading challenge for fall, and can't wait to start choosing my books!

Abigail | 315 comments Lyn wrote: Out here we spell it Vargas, and there are more things named Vargas than you can shake a stick at. What was your great grandfather's name?

Vargas with an "a" is more common b/c that's the Spanish spelling. Vargus with a "u" is the Portuguese version, so you don't see it as much. My great-grandfather was named Antonio de Vargus, and he owned the Bucket of Blood Saloon (its popular name, officially the Vargus Saloon) in Concord. My grandfather was born in the back room, in fact. We used to think my dad made the whole thing up, until my aunt found a picture of the saloon and mention of my family in her local paper's lifestyle section's historical tidbits. (She lived in Sunol at the time.) I don't think any of us have bothered trying to find any more info though...

message 115: by Morgan P (last edited Aug 22, 2009 01:47PM) (new)

Morgan P | 20 comments Hi everyone! I am new to this group, but most of you might know me from TNBBC. I really want to keep going with the challenges, so I decided to join this group. I am going to do my best to do a moderate amount of reading, but with a new school year, that might be a bit difficult.

When I'm not reading, I like to play with my dogs, hang out with my friends, be on the computer, and listen to music. I also like art, but I'm not that good at it, other than photography. I really like photography. :-)

message 116: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) I am Teresa in ohio : ) I thought the challenge would reduce the tbr list, boy was I wrong

i am having so mjuch fun looking for books, I cant wait to start them.

Shellie (Layers of Thought) (shelliesshelves) Hello Everyone -
I'm 46 and living in the AZ desert. Transplanted from Northern CA. I love books - and these challenges are a blast! I think I like completing the list as much as I like reading whats on it.
This Fall 09 challenge will be my 3rd. I am a bit of a "snail reader" and get distracted easily, so I really like this awesome list to help me focus my reading even if I only complete 1/4 of it.
Looking forward to seeing what everyone else is reading.

Tanya D (mtlbookworm) | 144 comments *Waves to everyone*

My name is Tanya and I am a book addict- and LOVING it! I joined Goodreads at the end of May- and TNBBC shortly thereafter. Lucky for me, the Summer challenge was about a week away from just getting started, so I hopped on board- and haven't looked back since!

I'm Canadian- from Montreal, QC. I just recently finished my Bachelor of Commerce, was planning to take the summer off but hade a lovely job fall into my lap about a month into my break- which I couldn't turn down. So I've now officially joined the ranks of the employed.

I went through a very long phase of chick-lit right before joining goodreads, but because of the challenge, I'm up for reading just about anything.

message 122: by Linda (new)

Linda Hi all,

I'm Linda, from Ohio. I'm new to the groups here on Goodreads. It was stumbling onto the summer challenge that got me interested in joining. I'm looking forward to being able to participate in the Fall challenge for the first time, but I admit I'm a little intimidated. Seeing how many books others were able to read for the last challenge, I'm sure my showing will be quite poor, but nonetheless, it will get me to read some of what's in my TBR shelf and maybe introduce me to some new stuff.

Aside from reading, I enjoy crocheting and playing volleyball.

Linda

Krista (kacey14) Is it just me, or does it seem like only women have introduced themselves so far? Are there any men brave enough to chime in and say "Hi"?

Are there any men participating in this challenge? Let's hear from you too! :-)

message 127: by Katerina (new)

Katerina Hi! I found the summer book challenge in mid-July and have loved the variety of books it has introduced me to. I am always looking for the next good book to read, and this has given some fun direction to that effort. Thanks, Cynthia.

I go by Iris. My husband, two boys, and I live in the friendly town of Midland in the desert of West Texas. I enjoy learning, reading, and gardening (although gardening has its challenges out here). I get most of my learning by home-schooling our boys. Reading gets squeezed in where I can fit it, but the boys have encouraged it more since I tied my personal goal with a family trip to Baskin Robbins.

I am looking forward to seeing how I can fit our school reading into the fall challenge!

message 128: by Rora (new)

Rora Hello everyone, my name is Aurora. I'm 35 and live in Wisconsin with my boyfriend and two cats. I love to read and have enjoyed participating in the Spring and Summer challenges. My favorite genre is fantasy though I've been starting to read more historical fiction lately.

I'm looking forward to the Fall challenge and I think the new group is great. : )

message 129: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (WeHaveLostSignal) | 3 comments Hello. I'm Shaun and I live in Virginia. I'm 26 years old, love reading as a means of relaxing, stimulating my imagination, and just a way to escape. I also enjoy road trips, concerts (the louder and harder the band, the better), going out for drinks with my co-workers and friends, and the like. I don't make as much time as I'd like for reading, but I'm hopeful that this will get me back into doing so more often.

Howdy to a fellow Texan! I'm living down in Bryan now, but I grew up on the very west side of Fort Worth, and my parents and in-laws live in Weatherford. Not TOO far away (by Texas standards)... under 300 miles! *zooms out on the map* Oh wow... farther than I thought. Oh well. (My hubby and I just drove to Las Vegas and back, so that seems like hardly anything!)

Welcome!

message 134: by Noell (new)

Noell (nrembert) | 1 comments Hi! My name is Noell and currently I live in Nashville, TN. A friend did the last few challenges and I thought it sounded like a lot of fun.

I've always loved reading, but in school I got out of the habit since I had to read so much for classes. Well, unfortunately, that snowballed and I quit reading all together. I think it's a love/dislike relationship because I'm a very slow reader and my comprehension leaves a lot to be desired. However, in the last few years, I realized that I need to keep my brain stimulated and reading is the best way to do it!

Aside from reading, I enjoy playing soccer, rock climbing, running, games and puzzles or anything competitive, eating, music, movies, and animals. I have 2 cats who I love - Lolita is 6 years old, 20 pounds, and a big diva, and Jane is my new 18 week old kitten who just loves to aggravate Lolita.

I'm on the board of Book'em, which provides books to underprivileged children in the Nashville area. I also volunteer for the organization and it's so rewarding to see the happiness on their faces when they get a new book to dive into!

Thanks for putting this Challenge together - I'm really looking forward to it!

Alyssa | 72 comments Hello everyone!
My name is Alyssa. I'm a 24 year old grad student currently living in New York City. I moved here from New Mexico last year in order to attend NYU School of Social Work and it was by far the best decision i have ever made.
I am a big reader and have been since I could read. Unfortunately as I'm a grad student, during the year I don't have a ton of time to read for pleasure. I believe this fall challenge will be my one year anniversary in the seasonal challenges. Love it! :)Thank you Cynthia for organizing something that gets my head out of the text books once in awhile.

message 136: by Abigail (new)

Abigail | 315 comments Alyssa,
Social worker is my dream job (see 25.1!), and I'm thinking of going back to school when the kids are a bit bigger. (I have a bachelor's, but not at ALL related.) I might just corner you and pick your brain one of these days...

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments I hate talking about myself because I never know what to say.

I guess I can start with, my name is Sarah. I am a 22 year old college student. I plan on graduating in December and getting my bachelor's in Sociology. From there I plan on going to graduate school for Social Work. Currently, I am working at an internship office for social concerns and I love it!

I live at home with my parent's, brother, 4 dogs and 1 cat. I love it! I have been in a serious relationship with my boyfriend now for 2 years and he and I plan to get married in the future. We want to get settled down a little bit in our own worlds before we join them.

That's about it. Ta ta for now! Hope to talk and get to know some of you better soon :).

Howdy, Sara! I just moved from College Station to the south DFW area. Great to see someone from small-town Texas on here. I'll be driving back to B/CS every so often for A&M events, so I'll give a shout out in your direction. =)

Deirdre Skaggs (deirdre04) | 101 comments Hi, everyone!

I'm Deirdre, a technical editor for a statistical software company in College Station, TX. I work remotely as of this summer when my husband and I moved to Mansfield, TX (which is just southeast of Fort Worth) for his new job.

I've always loved to read and have let too many other things get in the way of that hobby in the past few years. But now that I've found this seasonal challenge (thanks, Cynthia! Great idea!), you can bet I'll be reading quite a bit more.

Happy reading!

Suzanne (smbarsness) | 5 comments Hi! My name is Suzanne. I just turned 59 and started reading with the Summer 2009 Challenge. My daughter introduced me to the group. I am an RN, work in research and teach as adjunct faculty in a school of nursing. My available reading time will greatly reduce during the school year, but I plan on keeping my interest peaked. I have found more authors and interesting books and always have my Kindle on me with many things waiting to be read! Thanks Cynthia for your hard work.

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Hi! I'm Cindy, and I'm from LA - Lower Alabama, that is. I joined Goodreads in the spring, and discovered The Next Best Book Club a couple of weeks before the Summer Challenge started. I finished the challenge, but I promised the family I would take it slower in the fall!
I am 51, I have a DD just out of college and a DS just starting college. I have a stay at home spouse, but my job keeps me very busy.
Reading has always been my favorite hobby, and Goodreads has helped me get back into fast reading mode.
Thanks to Cynthia nnd Lori for all their hard work.

message 144: by Tani (new)

Tani | 108 comments Hi, I'm Tani, and I guess I might as well introduce myself since so many other people seem to be doing so. :) I'm 23, and I'm currently working as a direct support provider in a group home for children with developmental disabilities. I dislike my job, but I'm not sure what else to do with myself, so I'm planning to head back to grad school next fall (2010) and hopefully figure out something else to do that I like better than my current job.

In the meantime, I'm distracting myself from my job with my many obsessions, of which reading is one of them. I've always been an avid reader, but college kind of put a bit of a damper on things. The summer challenge finally got me back on track, and I'm once again completely obsessed with reading. I'm really grateful for the challenge because it's pushing me to read things that I might not consider on my own and broadening my horizons a lot. Left to my own devices, I tend to read mostly fantasy and scifi, but I'm really enjoying reading a wider variety of things.

I'm really excited for the upcoming fall challenge. I've been compiling a huge list of possible books for all the challenges, so it should be a lot of fun picking out which books I'll actually read. Thanks so much, Cynthia for creating the challenge and giving me so many enjoyable hours! :)

message 145: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Greetings and Salutations!

Name's Tanja. Yes, spelled exactly like that. It's German (can find personalized items everywhere there) which means Queen of the Fairies. Little did I know that truth when I was little for I took to fairy tales stories and decorating my room with fairies (still holds true). I am currently a government employee, basically a secretary (admin-support). Been in this position for years and plan to stick with it until I can FINALLY finish getting my undergrad.

I'm a 30 yr old divorcee, living in the DC area (MD region). Military brat so I have lived in multiple places or have visited them. It's hard for me to settle in one place too long. I get that "itch" which is coming up soon. This usually means re-arranging my bedroom ENTIRELY. That way I feel as if I have moved.

Was told about Good Reads at a book club that I not long ago joined. I adore reading. Got into sci-fi/fantasy very quickly when I was young. Used to read a book a month at least. Then that fell to the wayside when the internet appeared and was accessible. *laughs* Since, I've pledged to get back into my reading groove and instead of sleeping during my commute, I can read.

Reading expands minds. I'd like to branch out of my safety net genre and grasp upon new horizons. Thus far I have been very rewarded by peeking at other people's lists/comments.

Thanks Cynthia for this reading challenge! It'll force me to finish all the books I've purchased but never got to.

message 146: by Angie (new)

Angie (angelitabonita) Hi all, my name is Angie. I am in the Next Best Book Club group and followed Cynthia here because I love her challenges. Now I don't have a lot of time for reading. So I read what I can and try not to get too discouraged when i see everyone with tons of points really fast. But I totally enjoy reading books I'd never pick up on a normal outing to the library.

So I love to read, I also love tea and all things tea related, love animals, shopping and trying anything new. I am 27 and work during the week in an office and on the weekends as a childrens party entertainer where I get to play dress up and entertain kids with magic shows, face painting and balloon twisting.

It's great to meet you all and can't wait to start discussing the books. :)
