Jen B (jennybee618) | 885 comments Hi everyone, I’m Jen. I’m 30 and I live in North Carolina with my husband and 3-year-old son. I’ve participated in the last few challenges and I’ve really enjoyed them. I kind of dropped off from the Summer Challenge, though, after becoming pregnant with baby #2. “Morning” sickness (more like All-Day sickness…) isn’t very conducive to wanting to read tons of books! Now that I’m finally feeling better, I’m slowly getting back into the swing of reading…but my concentration is horrible! So my goal this time around is just to knock a few of the books out of my giant TBR stack. I’ll hold down the bottom of the leaderboard while everyone climbs up! 

Kate Cooley Hi,

I think this group is an amazing idea, although i have been warned i may get addicted to it. So if this does not destory my job (Mental health practitioner) or my studys (studying law at night school) then i think it'll be great.

Vicky (librovert) | 240 comments Hi Everyone!

My name is Vicky, I'm 23 and currently live in Delaware. Up until a month ago I was going to college for Information Technology and Organizational Change and Leadership in Rochester, NY. Due to the terrible state of the economy, I moved back in to my parents home and am looking for a job and will be finishing up my last few classes at a community college in state to save some money.

I used to read a ton when I was younger, but the quarter system at my university was not conducive to reading. Now that I'm back home, I realize that I have far too many unread books on my shelf so I'm hoping this challenge will motivate me to clear some of them off my list!

Lindsay (ljones08) | 20 comments Hi everyone! My name's Lindsay, I'm 23 years old and live in Canada. I'm a registered nurse and an avid reader! I recently discovered good reads through a co-worker and am always looking for new books to read. Im a member of one book club at work, and it's definitely not enough to keep me satisfied! Im jumping into this challenge a little late but going to try and keep up anyways!! Can't wait!

Alyona | 8 comments Hi everyone!
I'm Alyona, a 20-year-old law student from Ukraine. I've loved reading since I was little (as probably everyone), but have rarely taken part in book clubs - I hope this will change with me being here :)
Apart from books, I also enjoy cooking, photography and learning languages (as geeky as it sounds). There was a dog in my family for 8 years, but now that we have a 6-month-old British Shorthair, I find it that I'm more of a cat person.
Well, I'd better wrap this introduction up and go read something from the challenge list :)

Hi Petra,
I saw in your post that you enjoy decorative painting. I am a decorative painter also and was wondering what kinds of projects you've done. You can reply through my email if you'd like vogelmom58@verizon.net

SuzieR wrote: "What's a Piggly Wiggly?! (clueless Brit here lol!)"

Suzie - when we went to South Carolina for my son's graduation from Army basic training one of the things I wanted to do was find a Piggly Wiggly. I thought the name was just too goofy for it to be real. Well, it is real - it's a grocery store chain, I think mostly in the Southern United States and it's logo is a cute pig. In the meat section they had huge packages of pig's feet and other pork products that I can't imagine people would even consider eating but apparently someone does and in massive quantities too. I took pictures inside the store and out so I would have proof of having been to a Piggly Wiggly. Here's their website if you want to find out more http://www.pigglywiggly.com/

Judy Leigh (judyleigh) | 2 comments Hi! My name is Judy Leigh. I am 32 years old am I am from the Augusta, Georgia area. I have been married for almost 11 years and I have an 8 year old son.

After taking several years off to be a stay-at-home mom, I returned to college last year to complete my teaching degree. I will graduate in five weeks, YAY!!!

I have loved reading since I was a very small child. I am a very fast reader, so finding this challenge seems like a good fit for me. I look forward to finding new books that I wouldn't have normally chosen. I enjoy many different genres and I hope to find a few new "favorite books" to add to my personal list.

Lucy | 6 comments Wow, there are so many people! My name is Cindy, I'm 25 years old and I live in Washington state with my wonderful husband and children. I am mother of 3 with #4 on the way so yes VERY busy stay-at-home-mom. But I love love love to read everything, just for the experience of it. Even if I dont love or even like it, I feel like I'm missing out on something if I havent read it and cant join in on a discussion about it or recommend it or not.
I used to be a member of a book club but moved and havent been able to find one in my new area. I was so excited to find gr! I'm kinda new to this book group idea and am excited to give this book challenge a go. I have so many books I want to read that this will help motivate me, give me a goal, give me something to do with everything I've read, give the books a purpose.

A fellow hockey player! Hi KT! Do you ever venture south into MA for games? We've played the Lady Monarchs a few times... Also, I found a book that looks like a *ton* of fun about hockey for the PE challenge (because, of course, I'll be *playing* hockey for the active half), so let me know if you need ideas. (Or just find my plan in the plans thread; I'm #48 or 49, I think.)

message 261: by Karin (new)

Karin (karin-m) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Karin and I'm a newbie to both GR and the challenge. I currently live in Texas and am a financial services compliance professional. I'm a brand new first time mom of a 4 month old son. I haven't had much time to read over the last few months, but hope to get back into the swing of things and think this challenge might encourage me and also introduce me to new things. I also hope to be a FORMER financial services compliance professional soon so that might free up some time to read, although that might be new mom fantasy land. :)

message 262: by Eliza (new)

Eliza (elizac) | 26 comments Hi,
I'm Eliza. I'm 30 years old. I live in Pennsylvania. I'm a horse breeder/trainer all year long and I'm a tax preparer during tax season. I live on my family farm with my husband, my parents, and my 93 year old grandmother (also an avid reader but not internet saavy). We do all live in different houses. I also have four dogs, three cats, and 25 Morgan horses. No kids yet.

I've never tried a challenge before but since my TBR pile needs a house of it's own I figured I'd give this a try.

Hi!

I'm Sophie and I'm 19. I live in a small Rural town in NSW, Australia. I live by myself (thought I'm debating whether I want to get a goldfish or two at the moment) in a one bedroom flat. I am currently a Trainee doing my Certificate III in Library Services and I'm about a third of the way through my diploma in child services.

I love reading and I'll give anything a go really - thought I'm not really into Mills and Boons kinds of things - thats not to say I won't give it a go if need be.

message 266: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) Hi Sophie. I lived by myself when I was 19, too. But I found myself at my siblings house a lot (mostly to be fed). I enjoyed the peace & quiet of my own space.

HAPPY readings!!!

Sophie, Are you getting the giant dust storm there now? I just got an email from my cousins in Avalon and they are being blasted.

message 268: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (daniellek86) | 11 comments Hey everyone! I'm Danielle. I'm 23, live in NJ and have a BA in English, and I have a super cool job: I work at a book bindery where we buy paperbacks from publishers, make them hardcover, and sell them to schools. One of my jobs is to write back covers for the books to convince students to read them. It's awesome! This is why my 'to read' list has so many books on it... I write a blurb and then I'm like 'hmmm, this sounds good! i want to read it!' Hopefully this challenge will help me get through some of those...
I've read 2 books so far this month, but I'm trying to figure out strategically the challenges where they would best fit, so I haven't posted them yet.
Good luck to everyone!

Rachel M. (rachelevelyn) Hello, my name is Rachel. I'm 23 years old and live in Ann Arbor, MI. I'm excited to start the Fall Challenge as my first reading challenge.

I love all things literature, tea, cooking, and conversation. I'm a shameless gamer as well. I currently work for a great local non-profit as a financial counselor.

My favorite authors are Jeanette Winterson, A S Byatt, Jane Austin (of course), Marilyn Robinson, Julian Barnes, and Barbara Kingsolver. Lately I've been obsessed with mysteries and have been plowing through Agatha Christie's works.

I'm excited to get started!

About two days ago we had a dust storm that lasted the full day, that night we had rain and hail and wing, yesterday we had a lot of wind and a bit of thunder. Today (it's the 24th right now and about 12.20 pm) you wouldn't have thought that the past couple of days had happened.

Sydney was completely blanketed with dust, just looking at it on the news it looked like a sepia (sp?) photo. My Bosses family lives on the coast down in Victoria and they were nearly getting blowing away the night before last and somewhere we've had earth tremors!

Talk about a crazy couple of days!

message 271: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (iowadreamer) | 21 comments So this is what I get for neglecting GR/TNBBC for a month... Do you know how long it took me to catch up on what's been going on? Yikes!

My name is Tracy, and I'm from Iowa (I think that makes three of us now!). I'm a 44-year-old mother of 6 (yes, six -- all mine, no twins), married 22 years this month. Since I write freelance and homeschool four of my six kids (the oldest is a freshman in college this year, the youngest is just 3), I don't exactly have a lot of "free" time. But whenever I can squeeze in a few minutes (or neglect the housework for an hour), I read!

I've enjoyed the reading challenges, though I've yet to finish one -- I just like the idea of hunting down books I might not otherwise have considered, and finally getting to others on my "to read" shelf. I even adapted the summer challenge for my kids for the summer -- and my 10-year-old kicked butt, winning every category!

I like having the challenge as a separate group -- and I toast you, Cynthia, for taking this on in your spare time. You realize you won't actually HAVE any spare time now, right? :)

message 272: by Lacy (last edited Sep 26, 2009 07:37AM) (new)

Lacy | 29 comments hello everyone, and wow, there are alot of us.

My name is Lacy and I'm born, raised, and unfortunately STILL living in Idaho. No, I do love it here. I just want to try some other places too.

I am a 27 year old mom to 2 spunky kids, boy (almost 2) and girl (6). I am a free-lance graphic designer and a Certified Family Home to a wonderful and challenging developmentally disabled woman named Conny who has now become part of our family. I've been a stay at home mom now for almost a year and have found that I'm even busier than being employd full time out side the home. It's much more rewarding though.

I love to read but only really started doing it 14 mo. ago. I was a bit obsessive when I started. So I've been working on balance. My husband is a non-reader and frequently frowns at my books, and my son has recently started closing my books saying "dun, dun". Thus, I probably won't be completing any challenges. I do however love participating in them. It's such a great way to find hidden gems and expand my views. I've come to the point where I would much rather read a book than watch any movie. You miss SO much on screen. I want to know their thoughts and the smells and all that history that usually doesn't fit in a movie.

I also have 2 dogs. We have a love/hate relationship.

And...I'm very detail oriented...and long winded :)

Oh! I only joined TNBBC to participate in Cynthia's challneges so I'm so glad she has her own group now. Thanks Cynthia! This is my 3rd challenge.

THE END

message 273: by Katie (new)

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 6 comments I know I already introduced myself, but I just wanted to throw this nugget out there to the new folks (or those afraid they won't complete the challenge.)

If my math is right, you've got to read 60 in three months to "complete" this fall challenge. I have no chance in doing this as I have been trying to read 50 books in a YEAR and right now even that is kicking my @ss!

So the bad news: I don't have a prayer of completing this challenge. The good news: That's not the point. Don't get me wrong...I'm about as competitive as they come and I want to win (and my OCD is rearing its head at the thought of anything less than perfection!) But for me (as I hope for many of you as well), it's not about winning, but about stretching your horizons, picking up books you may never thought to try, have been putting off, or gave up on.

So I hope those of you that may be stressing out about the challenge or feeling a little down because it can be very daunting, can take a moment and remember why we all signed up: to have fun and to read some awesome/educational/fun books! Happy reading everyone :)

(stepping off the soapbox now!)

message 274: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) Welcome everyone to the group...the challenge is always tons of fun.

@Katie...I also know I won't finish the challenge. I just like to see what books I can fit into the challenge. Anyways...good luck!!!

message 275: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Hi, I'm Shannon. I haven't been active on this site for awhile, but was so excited to stumble upon this challenge today! This is a wonderful idea and I can't wait to get started.

I generally enjoy historical fiction, classics, biographies, mystery/thriller, some YA, and a little bit of fantasy. I love having a goal, so I think this challenge will be the perfect way to expand my reading horizons. Good luck to everyone!

Cathy | 39 comments Hi, I'm Cathy and I moved back to Florida this summer after living two years in Seattle. I'm a librarian and have worked in special, academic and public libraries. Right now I'm working at a college library and a bookstore. I ran across this challenge this week and thought it was a great idea. I know I'm signing up late, but will give it my best shot! Thanks for doing this!

TMBookluvr (tmb1981) | 271 comments I'm new to this group My name is Tracey B and I am 28. I live in Texas. I love to read, but don't have a ton of time for it, and am not a fast reader. I'm hoping this group will broaden my interest in different types of books. I started Shutter Island due to the challenge here and will watch the movie when it comes out.

Thanks for creating this group. It sounds like a lot of fun!

I'm in my senior year at a private university getting two degrees, Business Admin and Accounting. I still try to read as much as possible, but a lot of the time I don't know what to read next, so this group really helps.
I found this website through my friend who then convinced me to join this group. But I think should probably get a library card so that I don't spend all my money at the bookstore!

Best part about a library card--it's free. I have been getting a majority of the books out of the library so I'm not spending a lot of money at bookstores.

I am with you! I have read six books for the challenge so far, but have only managed to claim two of them so far. It tends to be discouraging. What is your goal??? I tend to make my goal to get a higher score then the previous time. I don't even always make that goal.

Just joined TNBBC and Cynthia's Summer Challenge about 3-4 months ago. I really like the Challenge because it motivates me to read English books.

English is my second language so I won't know much about English books, for example, I have a difficult time finding book for each task as I don't have many books. Anyway I'm trying. :)

Stephanie Hi!

I'm Stephanie, I have a book problem, and this group looks like a ton of fun. The creativity is what got me. I am really active in several groups on goodreads, but I have not seen anything like this. I am very excited to get started, especially since a few people from my main group I moderate are extremely involved. It will be something else fun for us to do together and I can't wait to start the tasks. I am kind of going to use the fall task list as "practice" to figure out everything and then it's full-go for winter!

Thanks for moderating and thanks for having me!

Literally Jen (vampsita) I think I kind of just jumped in and started the challenge, not really introducing myself. I'm Jen, I'm 27, and I live near SLC, UT. I am a stay-at-home mom, and I love to read and watch movies when I'm not hanging out with my group of friends. My husband works in the computer industry, and we are hoping to buy a house in the near future.

I participate in 2 book clubs, one of which I organize. I am currently looking for 1-2 new members to add to our book club, so if anyone from SLC or around there sees this, feel free to contact me for more information. I am looking for permanent, dedicated members who can keep up with the reading and don't mind tackling thick books as well as new authors/genres.

LOL, Kaeley! That is so awesome that you would be interested! We are all a bit older than you are, and somehow I don't know that your parents would approve. That said, though, if your mom is also a reader and would be interested in joining a book club, maybe you two could come together! You can have your mom contact me if she would like. I'm not sure that all the books we read would be of interest to you, but if they are, then great! It would be fun!

I do have an online group as well, but it has pretty much fizzled. If I start something up with it again, I'll be sure to let you know.
