Libby (libbyou) Hi, I'm Libby. I found this group through The Next Best Book group, which I'm just lurking around. Anyway, I like the idea of the seasonal challenge, so that's why I'm here! I have a question...the books that were voted on, we don't start reading those until the challenge begins, is that right? I have Princess Bride and Alice on my Kindle (sorry, please don't throw books at me, I have so many now, I had to convert)...but I've been putting off reading them until the first of December. Have I got it right? Thanks...i'm beginning to repeat myself.

Welcome, Libby. Technically, you can start reading a little early if you want. The rules state that you can't use books for the challenge if you have them more than half-way completed at the start of the challenge (December 1).

By the way, the one thing that we will never throw at you is a book! Far too precious.

Don't worry, there are several of us here who have a kindle! I love mine... I have two bookshelves filled with books in my small dorm room and some have to be piled on top of each other to make room... it was time to convert to it to. Problem is that now, I frequently end up buying it in paperback and kindle form...

I hope you enjoy the challenge! It will be a lot of fun.

Rebecca (thebookhangover) | 46 comments Hello all! My name's Rebecca and I'm from Sydney. I was just browsing through the different groups in GoodReads when I came across this one. I'm very intrigued and can't wait to start. I'm excited for the next five days to pass so I can start the Winter Challenge (which consequent of living in Australia, I shall be doing in summer hahaha).

Enjoy!

message 358: by Barbara VA (new)

Barbara VA (barbarava) Hi, I'm Barb and new to the group. I am 54 and read All the time here in Fredericksburg, VA. I will read just about anything, boxes on the counter if nothing else is nearby, but I prefer travel narratives, historical fiction (I am in Outlander now), cookbooks (I am loving Good Eats, The Early Years by Alton Brown) and mysteries (#1 Ladies Detective Agency). I find that I really enjoy fiction by journalists and other non fiction writers (my favorite writers are Dominick Dunne, Theodore Dreiser and Peter Mayle). Jane Austen still sends me as does Rosamund Pilcher. I am now reading the novels behind my favorite movies and just loving them. I have read Now Voyager, Mildred Pierce, Random Harvest and Kitty Foyle. How much fun is this! Can not wait to get into the challenges! Good Luck all.

Sara (hoot31) Welcome to the group Barb! I am just down the road in Richmond. Hope you enjoy the group!

message 360: by Amy (new)

Amy Sara & Barbara ... you are making me homesick. I was born and raised in Richmond and lived there my entire life until last year when we moved to the midwest. I miss VA so much!!

message 361: by Barbara VA (new)

Barbara VA (barbarava) I am trying to find the challenges site and I am having a hard time. Help! The Fall tasks that were completed look like so much fun, i just have to get in on this.

message 362: by Sara (new)

Sara (hoot31) Barbara, the tasks are listed under the Winter Challenge section just below the fall section. Good luck!

Thanks, they look awesome, I am designing the winter now and making my shopping list for Christmas. My family will have it easy this year!

message 365: by CrowFox Mischief (new)

CrowFox Mischief (crowfox) My name is Maria and I'm a 26 year old mother of two goblins (soon to be three in 2 weeks!). I currently live in Wisconsin and hold down a full time job as a Food Quality Technician.

I've always loved reading and still do. It's just a matter of finding where to squeeze it in with family and work. I also enjoy other hobbies like video gaming, writing, and blogging.

I'm really hoping to join in on the winter challenge! I'm also in a couple of other reading challenges, so some books might overlap. Overall I love to read YA, some lit, and some fantasy.

I'm using my reading challenges to help me branch out and find other appealing genres that I normally wouldn't go out of my way to read.

message 366: by Valorie (new)

Valorie | 817 comments Hi my name is Valorie and I'm new to this group. I'm 37 and live in South Florida. I am a book addict so this group should help me work through my addiction and my ever expanding TBR pile! The winter challenge will be my first and I cant wait to start it! This should be a lot of fun!!

message 367: by Cindie (new)

Cindie | 1835 comments I am new -- my name is Cindie. I am 42 (who said that??) and have 3 kids: Griffin is 14, Max is 13 and Cooper is 4 (yes all the same father although I get that a lot). I grew up in NJ but have spent that last 16 years in Indiana. I am a stay at home mom and volunteer but really, my life is about getting everything done so I can read. I have had chubby little hands pulling down my books for...well, for 14 years. Anyway, I have been haunting this site for a while and LOVE it, and decided to take the plunge for the winter challenge. Here goes!

message 368: by Liska (new)

Liska Hey all, I'm Settie. I'm a full time college student from the Northeast majoring in English and Spanish. I've been thinking lately about maybe becoming a librarian, so if any of you have any words of wisdom to share, I'd love to hear them!

I love literary fiction, but think that good prose should always be second to a good story. I have waaay too many favorite books to name, so I won't even get into that right now...Since I spend so much time reading during the week, it's hard to get into a novel while school is in session, so I tend to overdose during the holidays. Which is why I fail at the fall/spring challenges, but devour the winter/summer ones =)

Thanks, Cynthia, for setting all of this up!

message 369: by The Angeline (new)

The Angeline | 2 comments I'm Angie and new to the seasonal challenges, though I'm ready and eager to jump into the Winter one! I'm a writer, a musician, a student, a daydreamer, and an enthusiastic reader of every genre under the sun. I've been looking forward this winter to exploring new books and authors while finally jumping into those titles I've been eyeing for ages, and I'm excited to see where this goes.

message 370: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 1 comments Hello--
Today is December 1, I have joined this group in order to gain some encouragement to read more. I work full-time and find little time to read, but miss those days when I was kid and could fly through a book in a day or two. It seems with the business of life and distractions such as internet (with loads of information), college, marriage, kids and house my reading has taken a backseat. I am looking to discuss current fiction and be challenged to read more. I live in MN and this is a perfect time to sit by the warm cozy fire with a stack of books!

regards,
cindy

This group/challenge made me increase my reading by like 1000%. Before this group, I read maybe five books for fun... I'm a full time college student and work 20+ hours a week. Anyway, I hope that it helps you find more time to read and that you get through that big stack of books!

message 372: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Tuckey | 6 comments Hi all! My name is Sharon and I live in Wyoming (South of Montana, North of Colorado and Utah; you'd be surprised how often I get asked where Wyoming is). I'm new to the world of internet communities. It seems strange to me to have friends that you've never even met, but I somehow stumbled across GoodReads the other day and am excited to get book ideas from people across the country and around the world.
I've been reading since I was three and am a constant reader, even if it's just a 30 minute drive or a 5 minute lull at work. I am thrilled that I came across the seasonal challenges (and just in time for the winter challenge) because I always seem to read the same type of books and would love to branch out a bit.
I don't plan on completing the challenge, but I am looking forward to exploring more sections of my library. I'm such a nerd I've already picked out one of my books for the Dewey Decimal challenge, and know which section my other book will be from. :)
Good luck to everyone. I look forward to following everyone's progress throughout the winter.

message 375: by Carma (new)

Carma | 28 comments Hi, my name is Carma and I am in Iowa. I am a daughter of a librarian and was an English major/Library Science minor. I worked in three different bookstores at various times during my retail days. I like to read like I like chocolate. I joined a book club about 3 years ago and enjoy that. But am looking forward to some new ideas.
My mother has been hounding me for quite some time to try the challenge. (Hi Mom!) So, of course, I decide to try the one that she is saying is so hard.
So I probably will just set a goal for a certain number of points and work from there.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 306 comments Welcome everyone!!

Zimbellina | 108 comments Hi, I'm Kandie and I live in Australia. I just finished my undergraduate degree and I'm trying to figure out if I want to go on to post grad or do something else. I just discovered goodreads and this group and I'm already really excited by the challenge. Hopefully I'll get through a bunch of books of my TBR list. :)

Adriana (endswell) | 4 comments Hi! I'm Adriana, age 35, mom of 4 kids. We live on a farm outside of Fredericksburg, VA and I work as a Web developer for our local library system full-time. I am getting very predictable in my reading habits (vampires and then WWII), so I am hoping this challenge will help mix things up.

message 381: by Sally (new)

Sally (sallysimply) | 537 comments Hi everyone! I'm Sally! I live and work in NYC. I'm a bookworm who wishes life didn't get in the way of my reading.

I've wanted to participate in the challenges since the summer, but I can never get it together and keep track of the tasks. But I've committed to try the winter challenge, and I'm excited to start.

message 382: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 0 comments HI Sally Welcome....I know what you mean about life getting in the way and taking time to track the challenge. I do encourage you to try to do this one, the challenges are a lot of fun.
Good Luck :~)

message 383: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 1 comments Hullo! I'm Lindsey, a 19-year-old Spanish major; I split my time between school in Reno, NV (go Wolfpack!) and home, about three hours west in the northern Bay Area. I made a Goodreads account over a year ago, but for some obscure, unremembered reason, I promptly ignored it. =/

When I received the Winter newsletter a few days ago I decided to check it out again, and lo! and behold, I found an entire group dedicated to challenges! (Well, and books. =]) I look forward to working on them with everyone, and already have my first two books lined up. I can't wait for finals to be over so I can get my hands on 'em.

message 384: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 138 comments Greetings! I'm Nancy, and although I missed the beginning of the Winter Challenge, I want to make sure I'm in on the Spring Challenge from the beginning so I'm joining now. My reading habits aren't voracious enough to ever complete the challenge, but I love the idea of using it to find new books to read and to challenge myself to read more each season.

Nancy,

You can join the current challenge at any time & any books you have read during the challenge period (in this case, any book read in December) can be used to fulfill the tasks.

message 386: by Tammy (new)

Tammy | 4 comments Hi! I am Tammy. I am 44 years old and live in PA. I have been married for 21 years and have a 16 year old and a 20 year old sons. I love reading a lot of different things but needed some variety in my choices. I am hoping that the Challenge makes me read some new things. I know thta I will not be in the high point numbers, but I am excited to get started and read some great books.

message 387: by M (new)

M Hi, my name is Melaine and I just came across this group. What a great idea! I can't wait to get started. I love to read, I've always loved to read, and before I could read, I would pretend to read!

message 388: by Kristal (new)

Kristal | 13 comments Greetings and Salutations! My name is Kristal, I am a SAHM with one husband, two kids and three dogs (currently four-trying to place one-Does anyone want a sweet, sweet dog? LOL!) I just turned 41 a few weeks ago and am still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up :0) Along with reading, I love vintage items and have recently started sewing. I have discovered an outlet for these items on Etsy and have slowed down with my reading trying to set up a shop there.
I love the idea of this group with the challenges and am looking forward to completing at least a few of the task!!

message 389: by Eric (new)

Eric (ericm5622003) | 6 comments Hi, I'm Eric, a father of 2 (Ethan is 6 and Taylor is 3) from a small town in Wisconsin. I've been looking for a reason to read something different than I usually do, and I came across this challenge. I don't expect to finish all the tasks, but they have definitely given me some great ideas on new books and genres to read.

Happy holidays to everybody!!

message 390: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (slmetz) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Sarah, a 26 yr old law student at Florida State. I don't have a lot of time for leisure reading right now, but it is one of my favorite things to do, so I try to fit in as much as possible. I am also very competitive and love a challenge, so this group is very fitting for me. I look forward to getting started with this Winter Challenge and seeing where it takes me.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3040 comments I don't know if I did an introduction when I signed up. My name is Jayme. I live in a Chicago suburb. I am a teacher aide in the Special Education field. I have been in the profession for seven years. I love to read. I have been reading books since I was six years old. I also have a book on me and I read while waiting for my transportation or at home on any day of the week.

message 392: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyil) My name is Jenny. I live in north of Chicago with my husband, son, daughter, two dogs and two cats. I enjoy reading, needlework, knitting, cooking, and gardening when the weather is nice. I read while waiting for my children at sporting events and practices, while traveling, in the morning with a cup of coffee, and in the evening with a glass of wine.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3040 comments Jenny, I live West of Chicago. :)

message 394: by Catalina (new)

Catalina | 1 comments Hello! My name is Catalina. I've been quite lax in my Good Reads participation, but I'm hoping some challenges will get me involved.

I'm also not good at writing long intros, so you'll have to, you know, let the mystery unfold.

message 395: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne (a-town) Hello I'm Adrienne, I love reading, especially foreign literature. One of my favorites is Les Miserables. I also love older novels. I love the idea of a reading challenge. The topics look really fun and I can't wait to participate.

message 398: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina (sabrinasears) | 2 comments My name is Sabrina, i'm 26 from Beckley, WV. I am an Americorps OSM/VISTA, working with the Appalachian Coal Country Watershed Team as a Watershed Development Coordinator for Piney Creek Watershed Association (phew that's a mouthful!)
When I'm not out protecting and preserving our water resources in southern WV, I enjoy curling up on the couch with a good book (of course!)spending time with my boyfriend and our puppy and cat, live music, playing outside and getting dirty!, and I always have some sort of craft going whether it be soap-making, knitting, weaving, or whatever strikes my interest at the time (currently I'm obsessed with learning how to handspin yarn.)
I joined this group because I always seem to go for the same authors and same types of books. I think this will broaden my spectrum. Happy Reading!

message 399: by Mary E. (new)

Mary E. (jujjy) Hi all, I'm Mary from TX. I read voraciously, so I can always be found to have my Kindle in hand every time I have a free moment to gobble a page or two. These days I'm really into urban fantasy and paranormal romance, but I also love scifi/fantasy, mysteries, thrillers, and horror. I've been browsing some of the tasks, and I see that several of them will challenge me to read outside my comfort zone. This is actually a good thing, even if it means I might be off to a slow start LOL!

Happy reading, and I hope to see everyone on the boards! :)

Peace
