Jo Hello everyone!

I'm Pers and I live in Germany. I already participated in the Spring and Summer challenges, so I decided to take part in the Fall Challenge as well. All good things come in three, right? ;)
Well, what else can I say... I love to read obviously, and I'm already looking forward to curling up on the sofa with a good book and my cat this fall.

message 155: by Candace (new)

Candace (candacerenee) Eek! Though I can beat your 12 snakes (sadly)... the apartment community I manage, well - we don't allow pets, but when doing our routine filter changes a few weeks ago... we went into an apartment that had 24 different containers with AT LEAST 2 snakes a piece in each one. **shudder** I'm not really a fan of snakes, so that was not fun for me.

Wow! Another girl in CS?! That's so weird for me... at my college there are total maybe three girls. Maybe. I am not sure now that the one graduated...

Maybe we can keep each other reading! I know I will be bemoaning my computer classes and all the work they entail... haha

message 157: by Kim (new)

Kim | -9 comments My name is Kim and this will be my first challenge. I am a stay at home mom to 5 kids ages 10, 7, 5, 4, and 2. I live in Montana.

I have always loved to read. When I was a kid, I used to put a blanket at the bottom of the door so my parents couldn't tell my light was on. :) I even burned a hole in a pillow (not smart!) I was using to put over my lamp so it wouldn't shine as bright.

I am really looking forward to the challenge starting on Tuesday and I am trying to keep myself from reading the books I have picked out for the challenge until then, LOL!

message 158: by Kim (new)

Kim | -9 comments I am also a CS major although I graduated almost 10 years ago, LOL! I stay at home now, but I worked as a computer programmer to put my hubby through law school.

That's even better. I can't remember if it was ten years ago that saw a spike in women CS majors or some other time, but I've learned all about it at various women in computing conferences (and how now its dwindling again..).

I don't know why I get so excited when I see women programmers. It's such a good skill to have! And being able to put your hubby through law school? Awesome. Now staying at home with your 5 kids? It's like my dream future!!

message 160: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments I wasn't a CS major, but I was a student software developer in college for a couple of years. We were working on a program that Civil Engineers (THAT was my major) could use to calculate water runoff and other hydrology applications. Visual C++. It was pretty fun... I liked having the GUI stuff built in. My hubby was a CS major but switched (to Bioinformatics, and is now in Vet School), so I've seen what it's like not to have that.

Java handles pointers a heck of a lot better than C++ though. I was WAY jealous of that. I swear, I would just put asterisks in different places until the freaking this would compile. Haha... SO BAD. I don't want to think of the awful behind-the-scenes memory crap I was creating.

message 161: by Rach (new)

Rach (rachlovestv) | 261 comments Hello everyone! I'm Rachel, and I live just north of Seattle, WA. This is my second challenge. I was really hoping to finish the summer challenge, but decided not to push myself while on vacation - I went to see the sights, not sit in my room and read every night, right? :) I'm not sure how much I'll get read for the Fall challenge, but I like picking out the books so much, I figured I would keep going and give it a try.

I'm 28 and work as a graphics and publication designer for a church. I'm also an aspiring photographer, although I'm not sure whether I want to do that for a living or not. I also love TV shows, movies, and video games. :P My family has 6 cats - not necessarily by choice, they just keep adopting us! My mom is also in this group (Suzanne), as I talked her into joining and sharing my obsession.

It seemed like every time I'd come home from school (I was in college at this point) there would be another dog...lol!!! We've become amateur breeders as well (we had 2 litters of weims but now we're sticking to the bulldogs - 2 litters of those so far as well - my dog is one from the first litter). We have 2 English Bull Terriers (not to be confused with the English Bulldog, of course). But breeding bulldogs? I bet that gets expensive! They have to have C-sections.... The breed is no longer capable of giving birth naturally! (Something about the birth canal not being big enough...) I always think that's so strange. Cute dogs, though, for sure!

message 167: by Kristen (new)

Kristen What a great idea this is! I am always looking to explore new genres of books. It's like a scavenger hunt for reading! How do we update on this thing? Is it by book or do we do a total at the end of the season? I am totally new with this! Thanks!

Most people report after each task they complete or after they complete 2 or 3 tasks so that I can update their points on the leaderboard.

message 169: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hana_5) | 4 comments Hi, I'm new to this site. My name is Hannah and I'm 19 years old. I live in the United Kingdom, on the southern coast of England, with my parents, sister and two cats. I finished college in June this year and am now on my gap year, still looking for a job, so I can save up to go travelling next summer and for university, which I hope to attend from September 2010. Along with my love for reading, I also love music, spending time with my friends, going to gigs and tracing my family tree. At the moment my favourite books are Lance Armstrong's biography and the Harry Potter series which I'm reading in reverse(Deathly Hallows to Philosopher's Stone) because for some unknown reason I prefer it that way. I also write poetry very occasionally and one day hope to be a published poet.

message 170: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (weirdlibrarian) Hello, my name is Samantha, and I'm a Reference Librarian/Cataloguer near Dallas, Texas. I've been on Goodreads for awhile now, and came across TNBBC earlier this summer while moderating my own Summer Reading Program.

The Seasonal challenges looked SO AWESOME that I couldn't WAIT until my SRP was over to sign up for the Fall Challenge!

I'm a rather slow reader and tend to read and re-read the same books, so I'm interested in seeing what books will pop up to meet the challenges ahead. Not sure how far I'll get, but I'm looking forward to it.

Moody Claire (singurl) | 1 comments Hi! I'm SiNgUrL. My real midname is Claire and I'm 20 turning 21 soon. And I'm from the Philippines though I'm here in Saudi Arabia right now for vacation.

I don't exactly remember how I found GR but when I did, I enthusiastically joined and then later I also found TNBBC and joined and then a while later, I found Cynthia's Seasonal Challenges and joined my first reading challenge for Summer 2009 though I haven't finished it.

And now I'm excited to read for the Fall challenge. I hope I could finish a seasonal challenge, too.

Cheery up for Cynthia! I love your challenge! :p

Andrea (andreawestaway) | 38 comments Hi, my name is Andrea, I'm 25 and I live in Prince George, BC. It's small city about 10 hours north, by car, from Vancouver. I've been hanging around the site for a little while. I have an Arts degree with a major in Film Studies and a minor in English, despite this I currently work at a bank. {DAMN YOU STUDENT LOANS!!!} However, I am heavily involved in local amateur theatre and would love to migrate over to working more in that. I really love reading, as a kid my dad would take us to the library weekly and I still love going there now.
I'm really looking forward to my first challenge, it's going to be a lot of fun, a little tricky, but fun.
Thanks Cynthia!

Petra Welcome, Andrea! I'm from Vancouver. This is my second Challenge. I look forward to your progress through this Challenge. It's a lot of fun.

message 176: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 0 comments Hi Everyone, my name is Lisa. I am 39 years old about to turn the big 4 0 in October. LOL. I have 3 kids...well they are not really kids anymore. One is 21, the other 18 and the youngest is 15 and a half. I can't believe how fast they grow. I also have 5 dogs. 2 blood hounds, 1 basset hound and 2 miniature dauchsunds. The 2 miniatures are my babies although the big male blood hounds thinks he's a lap dog and is a big baby too.

I started doing these challenges last winter in the TNBBC group. I never end up finishing them but I usually try to better my score from the last time. I didn't get to participate in the summer challenge so I think I'll just start over with the fall challenge. :~). Anyways, I'm looking forward to being part of this group and the upcoming challenges.

Thanks Cynthia for putting this all together. You do such a wonderful job. :~)

Candace (candacerenee) I just had to share this picture really quick. This is my cat Susan (I call her Q though), I was trying to read last night and she decided that she was going to as well. Here's my bratty cat taking over my book :)

Q reading 'The Cider House rules'

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Great Pic Candace - I have to ask. Is Susan a torti? I had one years ago named Buz, but always wished that I had named her Halloween.

message 179: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Reminds me of my cats. They love to be DIRECTLY ON TOP of whatever I'm trying to do. Especially my husband's textbooks! They've learned not to try and sit on the laptop... They haven't gotten the don't-WALK-on-the-laptop rule yet, though...

Yes, she's a torti :). My other cat (Kiara) is solid black, so I've always called them my Halloween girls. I didn't actually name Susan. Halloween would have been a good name for her though, she's such a scaredy cat!

message 182: by Stacey (last edited Aug 28, 2009 11:37AM) (new)

Stacey (tigerkat324) Hello everyone...I am really excited to start this challenge because I am always looking for new books. I usually don't branch out a lot from my current genres (science ficition/thrillers), and I have not read a lot of the classics. I have completed my list and I am ready to start reading for the fall Challenge!
My name is Stacey and I am from Iowa, which is not the most exciting place to live. I am 30 years old, work full-time, part-time student, and a mother of a 5 year old. I should be spending most of my time doing other things besides reading, but when I have a free moment it is what I like to do.
Good luck to everyone on the Fall Challenge!

message 183: by Julie (new)

Julie (hawkeyegirl) Hi all! I'm 27, work in insurance with an anthro degree (of course, don't all anthropologists love insurance?) biding my time until grad school, which will be for Library Science I think. I've been a voracious reader since before I can remember and have a tendency to read one genre at a time until I get bored or sick of it. I'm hoping such a wide range of tasks will help me find new genres to obsess over. If there is one thing we bookworms love, its a new obsession, be it a book, author, series, genre or what have you.
I'm engaged, no kids, with a dog and the requisite cat. Aside from reading and buying books, I like to write, crochet, watch football and go on paranormal investigations. I also live in Iowa, Go Hawks!

One of my cats actively seeks out the most uncomfortable-looking thing in the room to sleep on. I don't get it. I've seen him on a hardback book that was lined up against a couple of my kids' blocks -- and purring!

I just joined the group and am excited to participate in my first challenge!! I'm 28 and live in Southern California with my fiance, work as an environmental resource specialist for the County of Orange and LOVE to read! I've got a ton of books on my TBR list and am hoping to fit some of them into the challenge.

Good luck all, looking forward to sharing reviews with you!!

Jessica | 6 comments I’m Jessica. I’m 53, a mother of two, and live in South Carolina. I’m a school nurse at a small elementary school two blocks from my house. If that sounds like the best job in the world – it is.

The Fall Challenge will be my third seasonal challenge. The challenges have totally rejuvenated my reading life. I read mostly non-fiction and historical fiction but the challenges have coaxed me into branching out a bit.

Thank you Cynthia for putting these challenges together. The start of a new challenge is as sweet as Christmas morning.

message 190: by Jenny (new)

I work as the online math instructor for my county school system. I am brand new to the seasonal challenge and am getting rather excited to tackle the every growing stacks of TBR books on my shelves. I just went back to school for another degree, so I'm hoping it won't take up too much of my extra time and I'll be able to complete the various tasks.

Katie | 3 comments Hi, everyone! I thought I should introduce myself along with all my fellow Marylanders. I'm actually between Glen Burnie and Annapolis (probably not far from Melissa). I went to school in College Park, commuted there, so I know Gaithersburg from my car windows.

I graduated from college last winter and am still looking for my forever job, so to speak. I'm working a few part-time jobs, but I have a lot of down time. I haven't been using it to read like I should, because I feel like I need to be accomplishing something. Hopefully this challenge will help me see reading as an accomplishment!

I read sort of indiscriminately in terms of genre and quality. If it falls in my path, I'll read it. I figure that's what my twenties are for. I'll be discerning when I grow up.

This is my first challenge and I'm super psyched. Happy reading, folks!
