Jennifer wrote: "So I do not have to register anywhere, right? Just create my own list of books."Welcome Jennifer! You can create your own thread in the 2019 plans folder and then create your list of books you plan to read there.
Feel free to ask if you have any other questions, and enjoy the challenge.
Sometimes I go into the Unread Posts category in the app. Then occasionally when I open a topic it will show a negative number of new posts. Does anyone know why this is? Thanks for the info.

Maybe I did something wrong but books I did for the challenge are not adding here even though I checked them to make sure they were added to my 2018 shelf for the challenge, Also I am showing only the first books I did of 8 and then a bunch of books from Good reads challenge last year not part of this challenge: Some of them seem to be also books I did not read for this from 2018. On the main page, this happens when I go to look at the books link for this challenge, I should have 2 left which it says but One of them is not on there. Thank you, I hope you can understand what I am saying. It never happened in the last 2 years I have done this challenge. Strange.

Is the “date read” added for the missing books? I know I’ve forgotten that before.
If everything looks right, it might just be a temporary goodreads glitch.

Could someone please explain more about Close Calls and Polarising? Or point me to an explanation if it’s already posted? I searched but no luck. I take it that Close Calls are topics that lost in a poll but not by much, and I have no guesses for Polarising. I’m interested in the specific criteria for both. Thanks!

Polarizing are prompts that had a lot of up votes and a lot of down votes, meaning people either loved them or hated them!
Here's the link to all of the discarded prompts, and you can see which ones are polarizing and which are close calls.

Ah okay...I didn’t realize there were up or down votes. I was just thinking Goodreads polls but more sophisticated polls make sense. Thank you!

I have tried do this challenge in the past and failed, but this year I'd really like to complete it. What I'm concerned with is my choice of books. I read for entertainment and relaxation-I don't want to cry or become stressed over a book, and I'm as enriched as I'll ever be (unless something happens in the future!) I read primarily mysteries and historical romances. I'd like to get out of my comfort zone a little, add a touch of diversity, maybe one book out of four different from my usual choices. I've been looking at other members comments on the planning pages, and I see that most (all?) of the members are reading much more literary books-they take their reading much more seriously than I do. Are there any other members like me here? Or would another group/challenge be better for me? I want to begin with the new year so I need to figure this out soon!

Aww I'm so sorry that the recommendations topics gave you the impression that you didn't belong here 😕One thing that's great about this group is that we try to be as inclusive as possible and that no one should judge the others' choices! I discovered great literary works through this group but I primarily read fantasy and even use graphic novels for some prompts ;)

If you're looking for recommendations specifically in your prefered genres, don't hesitate to ask, I'm sure you'll find members with similar tastes as you!

I read mostly mysteries, historical fiction and feel good books. You can do this challenge and still enjoy your genre. I try and step outside it once in a while, but if I don't like a book in 50 pages I choose another. For prompt one you can find a tons of mystery award winners that won the Agatha award. Prompt 2, 3, and 4 are easy for mysteries also. I also have found some really good books that I enjoyed outside my genres, so I have grown this last year. Stick with us, we will get you thru

Totally agree with above! I hate horror, so for a few of the 2019 prompts that lend themselves to scary books, I just asked around for books that would work that weren't scary, and people had tons of suggestions.
Just ask in the threads for suggestions and people will be happy to help!
(Also, keep in mind that many of us have high hopes for our plans, and then end up reading... not all of the literary titles we planned hahaha)

One out of four outside your usual genre is totally doable !!! We have all kinds of readers here, and the group is HUGE. So take the comments with a grain of salt. There is very small portion of us that post regularly.
We have members who have done the challenge with almost exclusively graphic novels, almost exclusively non-fiction books, and this year a small group who did the challenge with their kiddos using picture books ( or juvenile fiction). So it is definitely possible to do your challenge filling the majority of your prompts with your preferred genres :-)
We also don't judge if you bend or stretch prompts to fit in what you want to read ( Example: this year for medical/legal thriller it looks like I'm stretching to put in The Boy on the Bridge which is from one of my preferred genres YA dystopia. Zombies + Medical Research = medical thriller LOL). You can also do a partial challenge and only use the prompts that suit you.Its all in good fun and gets you reading!!
Like Sophie said above: asking for recommendations in the threads will often find you a book that fits what you'd enjoy reading that you hadn't thought of. Between all of us, someone will be familiar with your genres and what fits.
And like Emily said some of us do have high hopes, and a lot of times don't finish what we planned. ( Example: for a book that intimidates /scares you: I planned on Les Misérables, but then didn't have the time or energy to tackle something so long, so I switched my plan a million times ( Yes, I tried to jump in on the Ulysses read, again, time and energy) until I settled on A Clockwork Orange, which terrifies me (content and classic) but I probably won't have time for at this point, so for now I'm going with Horror which I love and using The Shining. )
Nothing is set in stone and we're fun, so stick around!! Its your challenge, You can plan it however you want to.
Betty I think I'm similar to you in that I read for pleasure and like to read sci-fi, fantasy, and thrillers - typically books that wouldn't be considered "literary". One of the best things about this group is that you get to make the challenge fit your tastes and reading goals. I've never made it to 52 books, but I'm gradually getting closer. Despite not typically reading contemporary, or literary fiction, I have found some great books through this group that have opened my eyes to what I had previously thought was no interest to me. And at the same time some of my favourite "non-literary" books have been picked up and loved by others here.

I think often some of the more literary books might be talked about in the discussions a little more visibly because they are often a little more difficult to read or are goals for members to get through. But there are still lots of discussions about thrillers and other genres. If there's s book you want to share or talk about, you can always start a new discussion too!
Betty everyone has given you great advice. One other thing is that some of us have been participating for a few years. Our plans may look more difficult because we are trying something a little different.

Sort of an off shoot of this conversation.... I’ve often thought about doing this challenge with all mysteries - sort of like Katie’s all nonfiction or several people’s all children’s books. Has anyone tried that?

I read for entertainment and relaxation-I don't w..."Hi Betty, I am so happy that you asked this question and I am grateful for the many wonderful replies already posted here. 2019 will only be my second year of reading challenges (and my first Around the Year), but like you I read to relax, laugh, be entertained, or just escape. I'm picky, and there are a lot of genres that I'm typically not into: literary fiction, romance, memoirs, chick lit, difficult classics, and dense history, to name just a few. I actually feel very stubborn about my challenges and refuse to read anything that I'm not truly interested in (I want it to be fun, not work!) and I will quickly ditch a book that isn't my cup of tea. But, I have a lot of fun researching what seem like difficult prompts until I do find that book I'm really excited about -- it's like a scavenger hunt! And like you I DO want to diversify my reading a bit, and so far I've had really good luck doing that while also filling the majority of prompts with mysteries, thrillers, fantasy/sci-fi and feel-good classics (my faves). Bend the challenge, make it yours, and above all, enjoy it!

Betty wrote: "I have tried do this challenge in the past and failed, but this year I'd really like to complete it. What I'm concerned with is my choice of books. I read for entertainment and relaxation-I don't w..."Betty, not everyone is a planner in this group either. Some of us are mood readers and just go with what tempts us. I don’t plan my books. If I created a list of books in advance, knowing myself, I would feel obliged to read them and the entire process would become a chore or would feel like work, so I simply wouldn’t read.
In fact, I stay relatively quiet in the group for the first half of the year. With kids and work, if I want to read, I don’t have much time to be online too. So I just read whatever I want for the first half of the year. I then download all the book titles that I have read for the year to a spreadsheet in July (about 25 books or so). I then look at the prompts and assign each prompt to every book that fills it. I then take a good look to see which prompts are filled by many books and which prompts aren’t filled by any books. For the next 3 months or so, I still read what I want, but I keep an eye out for books that might fill those unfilled prompts. Then by late October when I have a about a dozen books left to read, I do the same thing, but I also tentatively start assigning books to prompts. This becomes like a puzzle (which I love).
I then try to come up with different options for my last dozen books. I try to keep it as open as possible. For example, at the moment, I have about 5 books left to read, three that I’m currently reading and 2 that I still have to fill. The two that I have to fill are still relatively open (a book published in 2018 and one of the first 10 on my tbr). I haven’t decided exactly which book for each, it will depend what I’m in the mood for at the time.
In June, I also start being more active in the group as I love participating in the list creation.
In other words, not everyone is a planner on this list. Some people likely do the challenge and never read any of the posts. We make the challenge work for us in the way we most enjoy it!

Sophie, it's a great idea to start with reading and then slot the books in the prompts!
Sophie, it's a great idea to start with reading and then slot the books in the prompts!I'm not a planner either. I imported a spreadsheet with all my goodreads book (you can do it from the "My Books" pages). Then I created one column for each challenge prompt and marked down where each book could fit. Throughout the year, I have a look a few prompts in advance and select a few "short list" books (this also allows me to set up holds at the library for the most popular books). When comes the time to read for this prompt (I roughly read in order), I chose the book I most want to read or the hold that came through.
I really like this method, because I do have the scavenger aspect of it without setting choices in stone, which can make you lose interest in your choice (as someone mentioned earlier).

Betty wrote: "I have tried do this challenge in the past and failed, but this year I'd really like to complete it. What I'm concerned with is my choice of books. I read for entertainment and relaxation-I don't w..."Hey Betty!
I'm new to the group and, like you, read a lot of mysteries and romances as well as some fantasy. I'm currently working on my plan and will post it ASAP. I'll also go into the threads and make recommendations as I go.
Happy reading!

I read a ton of mysteries/thrillers and haven't ever had a problem fitting them into the prompts. I read almost exclusively for the ATY prompts and still had read most of the thriller nominations for the 2018 GR Choice Awards. You'll likely start to see more variety in the prompts once the challenge actually starts in 2019.

Thanks to everyone who tool the time to respond to my question! I feel much better about this challenge now! I'm going to read books I enjoy for the prompts, some will be really easy reads and others will be a bit more challenging for me. I even have a couple of juvenile books I want to read, such as The Giver. I'm getting excited about this!

I'm glad we could help! I absolutely loved The Giver when I read it as a teen and appreciated it even more a few years ago when I re-read it! Have fun ☺️

Graphic novels, mid grade, thrillers which I can usually fly through. Make it work for you and most importantly ENJOY YOUR CHALLENGE!!!!!!!! Welcome to the group 😊

Oh, and yes, I asked this question last month and we have one more coming up in December 😊
Bring on the read-a-thong (that made me laugh)! I admit, though, that I am more of a read-a-granny panty kind of girl. Comfort first.

Lauren, to add to what Zaz said, you can choose a completely free read (based on no prompt) or choose a prompt from the "reject list" and switch that prompt out for the one you are using the wildcard for.

I created a new poll for the read-a-thon here: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...
I allowed write-in answers since I know some may have specific needs with the holiday season. But, as always, we'll go with the option with the most votes.

Thank you for answering. It is up and going now.
Do you add the finished challenges here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... only? Or is there another place to add them since the latter thread seems like it is just for adding to talk about how the challenge went for you and not officially letting the moderators know. Or do you need to do nothing? (I thought I had read about the subject but I forgot where I read it at and could not find it.)

I don't think there's any official place that you let the mods know you completed it... This group is more for your personal satisfaction and discussion with the group than it is for the mods to check off your list to make sure you completed it!

As of right now, the winner is the week starting December 22. Since the write-in and the December 22 option add up to more votes, that's the majority. There are 4 people who want it extended into the New Year, we may end up doing that.
The Announcement and sign-ups for the team challenge will be posted in the next few days.
