15.8. Create Your Own Art

Read a nonfiction book that will teach you a new skill or help you improve one you’ve already acquired. The skill should be a traditional professional or self-improvement skill, or art, craft, or hobby.

On Photography, Susan Sontag
My other big hobby, besides reading, is photography. Sontag’s book is a fascinating critique on the history and aesthetics of photography, and ultimately whether there is such a thing as a “good” photograph. As such, it gives a new perspective on the subject, which I hope to use to improve my own pictures. (Approved by Sandy in message #16 of the help thread)

5.7 - Desk Set
Read a book with a main character that is an author or journalist.

The Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle

Dr Watson is a main character
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Watson
"Throughout Doyle's novels, Watson is presented as Holmes's biographer. At the end of the first published Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, Watson is so incensed by Scotland Yard's claiming full credit for its solution that he exclaims: 'Your merits should be publicly recognised. You should publish an account of the case. If you won't, I will for you'. Holmes suavely responds: 'You may do what you like, Doctor'.[9] Therefore, the story is presented as 'a reprint from the reminiscences of John H. Watson', and most other stories of the series share this by implication."

Sherlock Holmes is a main character
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherloc...
"Holmes is also a cryptanalyst, telling Watson in 'The Adventure of the Dancing Men': 'I am fairly familiar with all forms of secret writing, and am myself the author of a trifling monograph upon the subject, in which I analyse one hundred and sixty separate ciphers'."

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

3A. READ THE BOOK that has been on your Goodreads TBR shelf the longest. Required: Tell us the date you added it to your TBR!
My Best Friend's Exorcism added to TBR. I'm not sure when I added it to my TBR list. But I knew of it in advance of it being published. I only started added books to my TBR list sometime this year (moving them over from a hard copy list) and it was among the earliest batch I added.
