Well you know how I'm from this Caribbean island?... Now ask me if I can swim... Yeah you guessed it. I never learned when I was younger even though I went to the beach every weekend. As for riding a bike.... a few friends taught me a little in college. So I can ride in a straight line, but I have problems with corners and stopping. I just don't get how this seems so easy for everyone else!
At the same I played 3 instruments, danced classical ballet for 10 years, and was in the national theatre for some years, and was a cheerleader too, no problems there. So I'm guessing some things just aren't meant to be.
I really need to try swimming again....

I don't know how to swim, either... I never learned, unlike my younger siblings... I almost drowned in like 7 feet of water when I was 15-16... family vacation near this river that sloped down and people hung out on... I tried to go meet up with family, not realizing some of the mini-pools were deeper than 6ft... when I ran into trouble I tried to ask the strangers nearby for help while clinging to a handhold... they didn't really believe me until I sunk like a log and grabbed onto a young kid in my fear... THEN someone got me out of there and I learned my lesson to check first...

I feel you. I am extremely heavy for my size and when I was a kid I had so little body fat that I would just sink like a rock. I'm talking straight to the sea bed. When I went to get a full body analysis last year it explained a lot of things...

@Yanique Is it fairly common for locals in tropical areas to not know how to swim? Do you find that? My friend Jainesh who came from Fiji tried to take adult swimming classes and he wouldn’t let go of the edge of the pool the whole time lol. But he made sure his boys learned cause it’s a life skill.
My husband can’t float either, but when we swim in the ocean he can and he was all excited the first time like a little kid “IM FLOATING MARGRET!! AAAGGHHH THIS IS SO EXCITING!!” I was like “shhhh you’re making a scene” 😂

It's extremely common. Due to location, swimming lessons are not a priority. We don't have pools in schools, or swim classes because everyone just assumes you'll learn on your own time. Many of us just don't.
@ Iain I sank like a rock in the ocean, pools never stood a chance. I may be able to float now since I've got more fat on me now, but I was a very lean kid with a heavy skeleton. Yay for the bone density from the heavens!!!

@ Andrew I have exactly the same problem with pills - I can't swallow anything without about a litre of water to force it down my throat. I have a take a thyroxin pill (smallest pill you ever saw) every morning, and even then I sometimes almost choke trying to swallow it!

I learned swimming in primary school and it was compulsory for everyone I used to go swimming at some local swimming pools and I enjoyed it which I should get back to
Hmm pill swallowing sounds new I never heard of that I tried swallowing tablets without water which is a horrible idea since it takes ages for it to go down the stomach but yeah the more you know

Ok, I'll admit, I smirked at your choice of words... :p

Swimming is a real mind-problem... overthinking it makes you drop like a rock, I think... you have to let yourself be buoyant... I don't have much excuse for not learning except for being a bookish kid... lived in UK, near Virginia beach, UK again, and San Diego California between the ages of 1-6... all places with water relatively nearby... also lived in Maine and Connecticut before I was 10, with step-dad in the Navy... it wasn't until after that that I ended up in the Midwest, well away from the ocean... like I said before, my siblings that are 3, 7, & 9 years younger than me learned...
For pills, I can dry swallow a small antihistimine dry in a pinch... I need water and 1-2 tries with anything bigger... my youngest sister struggles tho... I had to get her to take these pills once when she scratched herself good on a rusty fence and she got a tetanus shot...

For taking the pills, I was having an issue till highschool and that major sickness. I really needed to take my pills, I struggled a few days, drank a lot of water then somehow I got the knack of it. Now I can take a relatively big pill with a tablespoon sized water. You just let it flow lol.

Nah, I pay an instructor to do the actual pushing. That way I can't be held accountable.

Damn you Jacqueline Carey! When I read her books everything around me turns dirty. Esp this one. She upped the hot level.

Sorry Ian, but I can't think the skeleton into buoyancy. People like to assume it's a mind over matter thing, but that's not always the case, lol.
When it comes to pills, I'm a pro. I was sick so often and took so much medicine as a kid that I can dry swallow most pills, and I can also drink multiple at once.

You still need to read her books. They're wonderful. And probably not as dirty as you're used to lol

Yeah, I'm really interested. I'll read those eventually, they're on my TBR. I finally accepted that I cannot read everything at the same time lol.

When you have as much body fat as I do, it's a mind over matter thing... I know that's not the only factor, but it doesn't help... dead weight and all that...

I weight about the same as your husband... mind you I'm 5'4" and a size 4.... think on that. My dad used to love calling me dense whenever he got a chance (he thought he was a comedian).

I'm more in the 6ft4 300lb+ range... like I said... with fat like that, I should be buoyant...

On Saturday, the wife and I are meeting Kelley Armstrong at a book signing, and afterwards I'm taking a writing class that she putting on. So, I'll have plenty of time to ask her if she'd like to do a Q&A for our group. How do I set that up? Would people be interested?

It was really good. I think I asked about 20 questions. She gave us a lot of information on the framework of a novel (aka the 3 acts), how to set up a scene, how to edit your work, the benefit of agents and how to get published, how to join writers groups, information on RWA (Romance Writers of America) who sponsored the seminar, a much more that I can't think of right now. Plus she gave me her email information to contact her assistant about scheduling a Q&A with us because she said yes when I asked her about it. And the wife and I got a couple of pictures with her, and some bookmarks, and some books signed as well. So overall pretty great and well worth the price of a ticket.

So I have a wedding on saturday. I'm thinking pinup style victory rolls for my hair. Give me some tips ladies for helping my hair cooperate! I have very fine, curly hair that is prone to frizz (think Bellatrix LeStrange from Harry Potter), and my rolls don't ever seem to want to stay pinned up.
