That makes your birthday past last month! You should've said something.
No that I learned sending pics in the comments and didn't have a chance to use it:) but I'd send a cake :)))

Can we have a thread for birthday lists? :)

Zaara compiled the list using the Team Reading competition signup sheet, since everybody had to list their birthday for some reason... She probably put it in her Buddy Read tracker...

Anybody else seeing this?

Yup, same here. That's weird...

Peter W Blaisdell | 5 comments A bit of a non sequitur from the recent posts above, but here goes (Mod, please swoop in and tell me place this elsewhere if it contravenes the rules for this discussion). Anyway, for any fantasy authors in the group, has anyone tried advertising their book on 'BestFantasyBooks' website?

I'll also try ads on the usual suspects like Amazon, GR and FB, but those seem packed with ads and have varying success rates based on comments that I've read from other authors.

You're not directly promoting your book so this is a fine question for this thread :)
However, for more authors to see it, you might want to make a new thread in the "self-promotions" folder asking this and then it won't get lost over time. This thread gets a lot of activity so people might not see this comment after a few days or weeks.

@Beste...there was some vile misinformation ;-) thrown to the winds that Zaara forgot just bcuz she didn't use a conventional form of words.
Of course we all remembered you...in fact, we were specifically wondering where you'd gone...reckon several of us were online that day for an extended period of time.
Only that one *points* had to lope off and go play Path of Exile.
Not sure I know what that is, Bella.
Only that it partly involves freaking fourteen year old girls.

It's a rose-tinted glasses thing... as soon as you're back in classes and getting graded, you won't miss it... you just miss the free time (mostly earned through procrastination)... that's my take, anyway... I feel like a sloth after more than 3-4 vacation/staycation days in a row, anymore...

Every so often I ponder the idea of going back to school since my career isn't working out how I want.

Then I remember the two years of grad school where I was lucky to sleep 5 hours a night and was constantly stressed and cranky.
I have no desire to repeat that!

I can relate. I just finished my Ph.D. last year, and that was rough. The stress levels were so high, and I started to get depressed. I do NOT miss it.

message 2473: by idiffer (new)

idiffer | 765 comments I was depressed throughout my first and only year at uni, so yeah, not missing it either. Even alcohol couldn't help with all the stress.

I was going to school full time, had a "half" research assistantship and was also still working part time at the job I had had since my late teens (16-24 hrs a week). In hindsight, I really don't understand why I didn't quit my other job once I had the assistantship. It was really dumb to stress myself out so much for so long.

I don’t miss college (mine was a technical school I guess). Getting paid and having a lifestyle where I get lots of days off is where it’s at, even if it is shift work

Sedat Yıldız | 263 comments Wow so many of you guys loathe the time you had in college, if I would talk about mine you all would gang up and try to kill me I’m afraid. Just gonna say that mine was sooo easy I almost only went to exams after the first year. There was just one douche teacher who forced us to come 1/3 of the semester so yeah, other than that it was swell ^^

message 2477: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments To be fair I bet working is easier than university since all you need to worry about is working in your job and make sure that your financially secure and to be fair if you guys loathed uni back then it makes me wonder

Personally I’m okay with uni although this year was hard and I’ve been procrastinating hard as well fortunately I haven’t killed myself yet so I must be doing alright and I’ve not got long left until o graduate or fail or something I don’t know anymore 😂😂😂😂

I'm with you on that, you're not alone. Grad school was stressful, but college was really easy for me academically, and lots of fun too. I made some of my best friends there.

message 2479: by Sedat (new)

Sedat Yıldız | 263 comments As for me you are right, working is easier than the college, at least you don’t have homework (that affects your overall avg) and exams, all you gotta do is finish the day and don’t look back while leaving the work :)

It really depends on the job. My last job I was working 10-11 hour days and still couldn't keep up. There was no appreciation and lots of yelling (at me). I would have nightmares about it cuz I was so stressed.

I worked too hard during college. Full time and 2 jobs that totaled 60 hrs a week. I didn't have any fun (other than within the classes themselves) or do anything to get that "experience." I wish I had done something differently, but I'm not sure how else I could've made ends meet. I was too tired to go out partying lol. Grad school was especially arduous. I don't miss any of it. Although I do often wonder how I had time to do all the things. I was still reading (physical books, no audio) 80 books a year on top of everything. Nowadays I find it difficult to find time for the simplest shit lol. Time must compound when you're busy af.

Undergrad was good. I made a lot of good friends and took some great classes with some great professors. And to be honest, I didn't have to work too hard at the coursework most of the time. I worked part time as well. But I enjoyed the whole experience and never felt too stressed. I'd repeat that 3.5 years no problem (yes, I did it in 3.5 years because I walked in the door with 15 credits from all of my AP classes in high school).

It was grad school that was the killer. I would have to have some serious career guarantees to go through that two years again.

I know I pushed myself too much during grad school but like you, I don't know that I really could have done it differently even though looking back I probably should have tried to.

message 2483: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments To be fair I didn't know what I wanted to do at Uni when I started because my choices were doing geological studies in Manchester which will be hell for me to travel or do a media course in leeds and I felt really limited because I didn't want to stay in accommodation and when I decided to choose my course I was still lost and I didn't do anything on freshers because I couldn't drink alcohol and commuting meant I had to leave early and that is probably one of my regrets as I too was serious in my first year I didn't know what to do in he future and I didn't socialise well with others

However I met some really good mates in Uni who knew how to have fun as well as be serious in the work and I was able to chill with them when I was free and just enjoy myself and it wasn't until after I did my placement where I learned how to edit, use a camera and all that jazz was when I realised I wanted to make some of my own stuff and I'm glad I made my decision as well as make some friends who I think would help me with my projects if I asked hopefully so yeah other than the essays and the procrastination which may be problematic I think Uni is okay for now

Although I do regret not going to parties or having fun in the first year so theres that

Basically, back then I didn't know better... you go from 12 years of school straight into college, because adulting looks unfun... and college is less class time, more free-form work/study time, and variable levels of paid jobbing is needed...
