To-Be-Continued? Maybe, but I doubt it
Review: I had a lot of trouble getting into this one. I haven't been reading that much lately, so that might be part of the issue but I've got to remember that I don't seem to like Yasmine Galenorn's books if they aren't part of her Sisters of the Moon/Otherworld series or the spin-off Fly by Night series. This makes the second one that I've started that I didn't really care for.

I think my biggest issue was Kerris knowing that she's a spirit shaman and leaving home anyway. She didn't learn anything while she was gone so with her grandmother's death, she has no one to teach her. It would bother me less if her mother had still been at home when Kerris left, but she'd been gone for years by the time Kerris left.

The "romance" in this one felt really rushed. I didn't care one way or the other about Kerris and Bryan, but they've known each other for a few days and he's already calling her love? I know there's some kind of magical mating thing going on, but it wasn't really explained and it felt really rushed.

Review: So, I'm still in the grip of an epic reading funk. The only thing I seem interested in reading at the moment are comicbooks/graphic novels. This is a collection of the first 6 comics in the series - So if this doesn't qualify I will completely understand. But I thoroughly enjoyed this (even though I'm still confused why everyone hated Superman). I never realised how much of a tool Green Lantern was. The artwork was beautiful.

It's fine to read Graphic Novels, and anthologies are fine too. This challenge is for you to find new series and you've certainly done that Charlotte :)

As to Superman, I've got no idea - was really surprised when I heard they were doing a movie Batman vs Superman (which my hubby is watching as I type) & I'm laughing at the idea Green Lantern is a tool - what would Sheldon think?

Review: This story takes place in Victorian England, with werewolves and vampires. Alexia is soulless (essentially a null, magic doesn't work on her and she can turn supernaturals human while she is touching them). She gets involved in a case when a young vampire attacks her and she accidentally kills him. I found the Victorian attitudes of supernaturals hilarious. I really enjoyed Alexia too. I will definitely be continuing this series.

Read: 9/28/2016
Rating: ★★★1/2☆

Review: This was a fun read for the most part. Iris is snarky and sarcastic. Really enjoyed her interaction with her sister Gigi, who she has been raising following the death of her parents. There was a lot of humor interlaced into the mystery of who is poisoning the synthetic blood supply for vampires. And the hunky vamp Cal that she ends up helping after he falls victim to the tainted blood while in town investigating the problem. I listened to the audio version and enjoyed the narrator's delivery.

Review: Good first book in a series. Liked the storyline and the characters. Vampires were pretty arrogant and of course all alpha but loved how they instantly adopted Janie. Also liked that the main characters didn't fall into insta love. The supporting characters were interesting too. Will definitely continue with the series.

Series: Capital Theatre

Rating: ★★★★☆
First time author? Yes

Review: This seemed more of a non-traditional historical romance read since the heroine Julia was independent, wanted to have an acting career and wasn't interested in marrying well or for a title. She unfortunately had been married off at the age of four for a title in exchange for her wealthy dowry to a financially challenged family's oldest son who was only seven. Flash forward twenty years and Julia and Damon are still haunted by the marriage contract of their youth. Both not knowing each other, but eventually meeting. Liked the story, liked the challenges and compromises made and that the story didn't end immediately and we got a few "day in the life" moments.

Review:
Closer to 3 1/2 stars. It's a good romantic suspense novel, but it lacked the action and suspense that I'm accustomed to reading in Gerard's BOI's, Inc. series. For some reason I just didn't connect with Nolan or Gillian. It took forever to work through their individual issues and the ending was a bit anti-climatic. I'm going to continue the series anyway because I'm a huge fan of the author and I suspect subsequent books will improve dramatically.

Review:
This is my first time reading this author's book. I saw that it was offered on Kindle for 0$ so, I thought to give it a try.
It started of like a typical shifter male dominant kind of story but, once it thrown in the Ancient race, it made it more interesting. I really like the heroine (Jess) in this story, a strong female (both human & wolf parts) with backbone living in the male dominant society and she kicked asses...even the alpha. As for the hero (Evan), I'm still not so sure. I kind of like him a bit that he's caring and not above to groveling. But, it annoyed me that he tends to run in another direction when there are things he cannot control. So, let's see how he develops in the next book.

Review: This is hands down the best book I have ever read. It was out of my comfort zone, but the premise was very interesting. Normally I rush through a good book because I can't wait to see what happens. I found myself slowing down just so it wouldn't end. Often when I read a book I find a sentence or two that resonates so much with me that I write it down. This book seemed to have a sentence like that on every other page...I reread several pages because I couldn't get enough of it. A brilliant Gothic novel...this is a must read.

Abducting Abby (Dragon Lords of Valdier, #1) by S.E. Smith
Title/Author: Abducting Abby by S.E. Smith
Series: Dragon Lords of Valdier #1
Read: Oct 28
Rating:
First time author? Yes
To-Be-Continued? No, no way, uh-uh. Not. Happening.
Review: The best part of this book was the story summary. Why? Because the actual story is ridiculous, forcing the reader to suspend all - and I do mean ALL - belief in human reality. I get that this is science fiction and is supposed to be about aliens (that look human when they aren't in dragon form (WTHeck?), but Abby's reaction to finding a spaceship on her property was just insane. I - as would most normal human beings - would get my butt as far away from it as possible and call for help, but in the book there is no fear, no shock, and no fleeing for safety. What we get is this:

"Ohhh, pretty! Let me stroke it and love it and tell it everything will be okay." *gasp*"WOW! What cool gold bracelets [manacles] you just gave me! Oh and a necklace, too? What a sweet spaceship you are! Let me rub you some more!"

Gag me with a dragon. If that's not enough to put the book on your DNF pile and you read on, the next question to pull you out of the story is how tiny little Abby gets seven foot tall Zoran and his 18D size feet all the way to the house and into the bedroom. All. By. Herself. Theys grows 'em strong in them there mountains.

The rest of the book is more of the same with lots of extremely explicit sex that is done with questionable consent. I don't read erotica, so that was part of the problem. I was caught off guard. Take this part of my review with a grain of salt as it's clearly personal preference.

The characters are like cardboard cutouts. Abby is TSTL. Zoran is a controlling Azzhat who hurts her during sex and takes every choice away from her. I didn't like either one of them...or any of the other characters who pop up in the book. It was like a train wreck...I couldn't look away.

I should've known better than to pick this up, but I was intrigued by the story summary and thought there was a deeper story here that could've been very special. Obviously I was wrong. As for the writing, be prepared to hear the same sentences repeated over and over and over...and over. Clearly this does not get my recommendation. There are better science fiction books out there and even though I know very little about the erotica genre, I'm pretty sure you can find better that this hot mess as well.

Save your time. If you do decide to read this book, I suggest lots of tequila and a very good sense of humor.

The base of the plot is similar to many shifter book, like primal attraction. Although I quite enjoy it, I got a little annoyed with the alpha male attitude, you-do-whatever-I-said kind of thing. I know he's the alpha but, well, sometimes it's just too much.

I really like it!! I rarely read ghost related novel but, this one looked interesting and it didn't disappoint. The plot is complicated, unexpected and really got me thinking. The description of the places and ghosts are detail. I like the heroine, Ellie, character. She is very dedicated and focus with a little humor. She is so brave like ... does she know no fear? Some of the time, I do feel that maybe she is a little to tough to be real, like got push into the tub, thrown against the ceiling. push over balcony and still she was able to run to another place to catch up with the ghosts. But anyway, it's fun and kind of addictive. I have been loading and reading one after another.

First time author? No

Review:

I really enjoy Karen Witemeyer's books! This historical western romance had a great story with a nice edge of suspense. The women of Harper's Station were not at all what I expected. Instead of a town filled with man-haters, Emma has established a safe refuge for widows, displaced wives, and young women that need a home or have other difficulties. When trouble comes to town the only man Emma trusts to hep is Malachi - a man she hasn't seen since he was a little boy. He offered his help, anytime she needed him. With the town's entire way of life in danger, he's their last hope before people start getting hurt.

The characters of Harpers Station were lots of fun, but they also looked out for each other. I liked the realistic friendships that were shown in the book and the effect it has on Emma. At times Emma and Malachi frustrated me by holding back from each other, but it's understandable. The plot moves quickly and the danger had me holding my breath at times! Definitely a winner for Historical Romance and Romantic Suspense fans!

He then spends a large amount of time wooing her to his side and saving/helping her save herself from the many dangers that seem attracted to her. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to continuing the series. The only part of the book I didn't like is that there is a prophecy involving Cat, mentioned in her thoughts many times, and yet we never learn the actual prophecy. I suspect that she is misinterpreting it and that's why I want to hear the actual words. Hopefully, we'll learn more about this prophecy next book.

Review: I should have read Harper's Jane Jameson series first, since this one is a spin off and has Jane in it. It's not that big of a deal, really but it means I'm missing some of the backstory. I liked this one. Cal was less of a jerk then I really expected him to be (there can be a fine line between complete jerk and alpha male and the men in books often cross the line and no one says anything - drives me crazy!). He does have his moments, but he doesn't cross the line, aside from comments he wrote down before he met Iris.

This was an interesting start to the series and enjoyed the worldbuilding and the direction CN took with it. The heroine Claire though naive at times was brave and your typical good guy, trying to save others even though it would expose her as a "sensitive". Which in this world, sensitives are humans that have magic and paras are your usual face creatures from beyond the veil. The way they deal with this in New Orleans is they imprision them all in Devil's Isle when they are discovered in this post-war world, where. Even butter is a rare luxury. Liam the bounty hunter is a slight love interest but more of a tease as his true passion is capturing the wraiths which are the sensitives that have lost their humanity to the magic. Only negative is that this at times felt more of a young adult storyline with the semi-helpless, most inexperienced girl always having to save the day...

Jess comes from a family of book smugglers and was sent to train at the library as a spy for his family as he loves books. While undergoing training, he learns that there is more to the Library than he had ever expected. The idea of thoughts/knowledge being regulated is horrifying to me. It is a parallel worlds story with the magic users being able to cross over from The Edge that runs parallel to The Broken on one side and The Weird on the other.
Rose from the slums of the edge is a gutsy heroine, having to put everyone else in her life ahead of herself. Declan is a blue blood from The Weird with ulterior motives but he grew on me.

Review: I was a little hesitant to read this so soon after watching the first season of The Expanse on SyFy, but a friend desperately wanted to discuss the title with someone. NO REGRETS. Fantastic story - as good as, and often even better than the tv series, while being wholly separate. I still get goosebumps thinking about it months later. Looking forward to the rest of the books, AND the next season of the show.

Review: Kitty is a late night radio DJ who just happens to be a werewolf. One night, she ends up talking about the paranormal and it is the beginning of a hit radio show. However, her alpha doesn't want her to continue and neither does the leader of the vampire family. Kitty starts off very submissive but because of her show, she gains a backbone and starts standing up for herself. I enjoyed the book once I got past the beginning (I really don't like her alpha) and look forward to what is in store for her in the future.

Review: Sophie spent way to much time (mostly during the first 25%) in this book making comments about two of the men in this book: Detective Hayes and her boss. Gushing a little is okay, but spending what ended up being pages gushing and ogling isn't. I liked the book by the end but I can't get over how much time she spent daydreaming about either one of them. It was funny for a little while but it quickly became annoying. I might give the next book a chance at some point, but it's not going to be anytime soon. (I also have issues with the mention a love triangle on the Goodreads series page - I really need to read those before starting a series. I HATE love triangles!)

Review: I really enjoyed the originality of this story. It's an interesting world and Gin is fascinating. I was bothered a bit by the repetition of certain words (circuitous) but I'm sure I'll get used to the writing style over time. As I said, great story and I look forward to next one.

Review:
It's a fast moving story but quite exciting one. Frankly I didn't expect much as I got it for 0$ from Kindle. I would say that I quire enjoy it and probably will read the second one in the future. At first, I thought that the heroine had it easy like, one chapter, she knew she needed the training and ,the next, she had become the grand mistress. However, it got interesting and more complicate when she met the hero and entering the cloister and then it becomes a struggle. One downside is that I had a bit of hard time understand the type of the magic in the story but understood more at towards the end.

Review: I am so very disappointed. After the awesomeness of the original series perhaps I expected too much. Maybe I left it too long between series. Perhaps I didn't drink enough tea while reading it. Will try harder with the next one. Maybe I'm in shock from finding out that Ivy's hats have become all the rage in fashionable society.

You may be on to something there, Charlotte! Some series/worlds definitely have a rhythm and flavor that is more engaging the longer you're immersed in it. Like getting the radio station tuned in juuuuust right.

The first time I ready Soulless, it was a slog. EVERYONE RAVED about the book, but it was only meh for me. But then a while later I discovered the Finishing School books - and was utterly enchanted. As soon as I finished those, I picked up Soulless again - and flew through the series.

The Custard Protocol has much more of a feel of the Finishing School series to me, than of the Soulless series. If you were expecting more of an Alexa feel, I can see where Prudence might not quite be the blend of tea you were looking for. Or the right hat. ;-)
