Yes, this thread is fine, Kristie. After looking at your "to-read" shelf, I would recommend:
Etiquette & Espionage (Finishing School, #1) by Gail Carriger The Winter Sea (Slains, #1) by Susanna Kearsley
~LK

Karen ⊰✿ | 16593 comments Mod
Kristie;

I will post as I finish a good audio. I am almost finished with
The Last Letter from Your Lover by Jojo Moyes
and I think it is a little repetitive on audio and probably works better as a traditional read. However,
The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes
by the same author works great on audio.

If you like historical fiction, I would also recommend
Citadel (Languedoc, #3) by Kate Mosse
on audio. Don't be confused by the 'book 3' status, all three books in the series work as stand alone novels

message 68: by Kristie (last edited Jun 05, 2014 04:22AM) (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments Thanks! Those recommendations help me. I have Etiquette & Espionage on audio already. I was thinking about getting The Last Letter from Your Lover from audible, but maybe I'll get The Girl You Left Behind instead.

If anyone is looking for a horror / vampire book: The Passage by Justin Cronin was done very well on audio.
The Passage (The Passage, #1) by Justin Cronin

great

another really good one on audio is
American Gods (American Gods, #1) by Neil Gaiman
where I loved the full cast;
Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
with Lenny Henry was great too

message 70: by Lara (new)

Lara | 676 comments I started listening to The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick , which I haven't read. Nor have I seen the movie. So far, it's interesting, but I'm not yet reconciled with how deep and mature the narrator's voice is. It doesn't seem to fit the character.

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) Start: June 12, 2014
End: June 12, 2015
Level: Sound Engineer 16-20 books
Option 1: Freestyle

◈ Female Narrator

Homicidal by Paul Alexander, narrated by Paul Christy 6/14

◈ Duets
An audiobook with one female and one male narrator.

◈ Full Cast
An unabridged audiobook with several narrators; there is a narrator per character (e.g. American Gods by Neal Gaiman). To find these, you can search most sites by the term “Full Cast.”

◈ Dramatizations
An abridged audiobook with background music/noises like the “old school” radio plays (e.g. BBC Radio Drama Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett). Also known as “Performance” audios, if you’re doing a search.

William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, A New Hope by Ian Doescher, narrated by cast 6/24

◈ Celebrity Narrator
Category name says it all: Somebody famous narrates. Examples: James Marsters reading Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series or Anne Hathaway reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. BTW, when searching, audible.com is calling this their “A-List Collection.”

Matilda by Roald Dahl, narrated by Kate Winslet 6/23

A narrator that you haven’t heard before.

The Secret Piano: From Mao's Labor Camps to Bach's Goldberg Variations by Xiao-Mei Zhu, narrated by Nancy Wu 6/14

A narrator that you have heard and loved before and would recommend to others.

An audiobook that is over 5 hours in length.

◈ 15 Hours to 19.9 Hours
An audiobook that is a Colossal Chunkster! More than 15 hours in length, less than 20.

The Last Camel Died at Noon by Elizabeth Peters, narrated by Barbara Rosenblat

◈ 20 Hours to 24.9 Hours
An audiobook that is a Super Colossal Chunkster! More than 20 hours in length, less than 25.

◈ 25 Hours to 29.9 Hours
An audiobook that is a Super-Duper Colossal Chunkster! More than 25 hours in length, less than 30.

◈ 30 Hours to 34.9 Hours
An audiobook that is a Monstrous Chunkster! More than 30 hours in length, less than 35.

◈ 35 Hours to 39.9 Hours
An epic, indeed! More than 35 hours in length, less than 40.

◈ 40 Hours and Beyond – or a Trilogy!
Beyond epic, indeed! Time to implant ear buds in your head. Forty hours or more! For this one we will also allow a trilogy that qualifies in length, or three books anywhere within a series, if you “read” all of it/them via audio.

◈ In-Sync Multimedia
Use an audible sync option to read-along! Such as the new read-along with your Kindle option by audible.com called Whispersync, which remembers your last stopping point in either device. However, you may read a book using any two media choices your desire, as long as one of them is via audio.

◈ Digital Downloads Freebies
Keep it legal! Public libraries using OverDrive Media Console, or Bolinda Audio (BorrowBox), or OneClickDigital downloads. There are also free sites like:

librivox.org
Project Gutenberg Audio Books Project
audiobooksync.com - scheduled release dates

...Audiobooksync has free audiobooks over the Northern Hemisphere’s summer.

◈ Multitasking! Listening on My Portable Music Player (PMP) Audiobook
Put on those headphones, get cleaning, gardening, grocery shopping, power-walking, even knitting while “reading” a book! Use your Smartphone, MP3, Walkman, portable CD player, iPod, episodic podcast, whatever! Just make Oprah proud.

Queen of Hearts by Rhys Bowen, narrated by Katharine Kellgren

◈ Audie Award Nominees and Winners
You be the judge. Try an audiobook that has been nominated or won an Audie – any category counts – and lists may be found at audiopub.org (look to the right of the screen for past years).

Still Foolin' 'Em: Where I've Been, Where I'm Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys - (Billy Crystal) 6/24

◈ Classic Read
Have you always wanted to broaden your reading horizons and get to that classic everyone seems to talk about? Try it via audio.

◈ Re-Read a Favourite
Old or new, choose a book you’ve read and loved - and see if you could possibly love it even more via audio. (Note: The right narrator is even more crucial here!)

Finished:
A Kiss of Shadows (Merry Gentry, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton A Caress of Twilight (Merry Gentry, #2) by Laurell K. Hamilton A Stroke of Midnight (Merry Gentry, #4) by Laurell K. Hamilton Mistral's Kiss (Merry Gentry, #5) by Laurell K. Hamilton A Lick of Frost (Merry Gentry, #6) by Laurell K. Hamilton |30243]
I have the rest of the books on hold in my digital library along with the Anita Blake series and Mercy Thompson. Merry Gentry is better than I expected but I just started book 7 and it is the third different narrator. I hate that.

4th audio for this challenge done

The Reluctant Assassin (W.A.R.P., #1) by Eoin Colfer The Reluctant Assassin (9hours, 29mins)★★★

Thanks to audiobook sync for the free download. It wasn't quite Artemis Fowl so I may have been a bit hard in my rating, but it is so hard when an author starts a new series after a series that you have loved.
The narration wasn't bad, but I didn't like his attempt at the female characters. The ability to switch between accents was impressive though

message 87: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments Just started book #7, The Fault in Our Stars. So far, I am enjoying the audio version. It was also and Audi winner in 2013. I am going to have to increase my goal! I've started listening to a lot of books during my commute. :)

I just finished catching up with The Iron Druid Chronicles series and bought the newest addition to the series, Shattered, from Audible. For any one that is interested in the series, Luke Daniels does a great job with the narration.

Does anyone have any thoughts for the longest of the timed reads (40 Hours and Beyond – or a Trilogy!)? I don't have anything planned for this one and most of the series reads I'm interested in at the moment are not trilogies, but longer series. I'd be interested in seeing other people's ideas.

Mods - For the above (40 Hours and Beyond – or a Trilogy!), could we read a few books from the same series (not a trilogy)? Such as 3 or 4 Dresden Files in a row?

Barb Kristie wrote: "Does anyone have any thoughts for the longest of the timed reads (40 Hours and Beyond – or a Trilogy!)?"

The Game of Thrones books have to be close to 40 hours, don't they?

Hey Kristie - Great job getting through so many already!

For the 40 hours yes you can read any books within a series not just a trilogy, so the Dresden books could be a good option. I must get back to them myself so I may steal your idea for that category ;)

message 90: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) I'd started listening to The Fiery Cross last year and recently picked it up again. Would it still be eligible for this challenge since I still had to listen to Parts 2-7/7?

If so, I'll use it for the Longest of the Time Reads since it has a length of 55 hours and 34 minutes....

If not, I'll use the next book which has a length of 57 hours and 46 minutes. Good grief.

Sure I think that is fine as you are listening to most of it and what you are listening to is over 40 hours!
Good grief indeed :D

message 92: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) :D Yeah. I'm on Part 5/7 and shuddering knowing what is going to happen next (view spoiler).

I went looking for ideas for some categories, and I already found two audiobooks on Audible that I desperately want. Problem is, I'd put my subscription on hold until August! To wait or not to wait...

For the celebrity reading:
Billy Crystal - Still Foolin' 'Em: Where I've Been, Where I'm Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys

http://www.audible.com/pd/Bios-Memoir...

And not sure where this will go but I'm sure it'll fit somewhere:
William Shakespeare's Star Wars

William Shakespeare's Star Wars looks cool! I wonder if that would be a "full cast"? There seem to be a few narrators there

message 94: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) I think it could. I also have Dracula
http://www.audible.com/pd/Classics/Dr...

which would qualify for "full cast" or celebrity. Narrators include Tim Curry and Alan Cumming.

I gave in and renewed my subscription. I guess there goes my budget for the next month. :D

I also got Matilda, narrated by Kate Winslet. The sample had me laughing out loud so I just had to buy that, too.

I have no control.

I read the book, not listened to it, but I liked it a lot :) I've also read William Shakespeare's The Empire Striketh Back, and am waiting for my library to order William Shakespeare's The Jedi Doth Return so I can finish the series :)

Hi Barb - According to Audible the first book is 33 hrs and 50 mins, so not quite long enough. I also thought of The Name of the Wind, but that's *only* 27 hrs and 58 mins. So, they both fit into big, chunky book categories, but not the 40+ one. I also looked at some Stephen King books, but have read many of them and still haven't found what I'm going to read yet. :)

Barb Well rats LOL I was guessing, I should have gone to look it up! What about some of those behemoths by Ken Follett?
