NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments Your itinerary is here

When you have a team name, just let me know and I'll update this thread name :)

First stop - Colorado Springs, USA

NBRC Travel Agent | 368 comments So just to get you started...

Your first stop is Colorado Springs, USA

You can choose as a team to:
TASK
- Read books set in USA, or by American authors or
- Do a spell-it-out of Colorado Springs or United States of America

OR
You can elect to do the detour, which for this stop, means that four of you need to "Read a book where someone gives a speech in front of a large audience"

message 5: by Helen (new)

Helen Bassett (hbee741) I am not good at coming up with names. For task, I choose Read books set USA. But will go along with the choice of the other team members.

message 6: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly Hey team 14 :) the proper name will come with time... :)

Since we can use detour only 5 times, I agree that in current stop (USA) we should read books set in USA or written by American authors - this should be easy enough to do within a week - or how you all feel?

As a reminder:
TASKS
◈ Completing a task will earn the team 10 points AND
◈ If at least 6 members of the team read a book that contributes to the tasks, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

Are you all up to getting the max points?
It would be 35 points.

I know I am :)

So if you start a book (all the books started from today count), mention it in this thread and we will keep track of all our books in our spreadsheet - I have time to modify and complement the spreadsheet later tonight.

Check in teamies! ;)

message 7: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly This weeks stop is perfect for me to finally read Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green.

Setting: USA (Chicago) and author is also from USA (Indianapolis)

My reading shelf for this challenge will be: NBRC AWT

Martina Forasacco | 74 comments Hi everyone! I'm up for the maximum point too! Sorry if I reply late, but I can say tiday I will start a useful book,I just have to choose one when I get home, then I'll tell you :)

message 9: by Martina (new)

Martina Forasacco | 74 comments As for the name, mmm I'm sorry I'm not so good at finding names, but we may find some inspiration in the countries we come from. What do you think? :)

message 10: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly AtW Bookworm Guides
or
International Bookworm Guides
? :)

message 11: by Monika (new)

Monika (monkatx) For maximum points we have to take 5 detours with everyone participating. I know that reading books or authors settled in USA is very appealing, but I am actually finding current detour to be really easy compared to some future ones on list. I am going to read both books either way this week so it doesn't really matter to me as we can use all books we read during challenge in upcoming weeks.

DETOURS
◈ Completing a detour earns the team 25 points AND
◈ If at least 7 members of the team read a book for the detour, that is an additional 15 points AND
◈ If ALL team members read a book for the time you are at the stop, that is an additional 10 points

message 12: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly I meant maximum points when we do the task (not detour).

I also find other detours easier than this one (read a book where someone gives a speech in front of a large audience) and other countries are more difficult ones to find books set in or authors from.
My opinion is that USA is in that meaning perfect to do this time the task and not the detour.

But of course we should vote what to do in this week.
Or just see - maybe all of us find a speech in the books we started from today :)

Shy The WidowMaker (booklovingmama) | 334 comments Hi teammates. I am cool with going either way for this week. Do I need to create a shelf for this or where are we tracking books somewhere?

message 14: by Martina (new)

Martina Forasacco | 74 comments I have a question about the detour: if we find a book with a speech that isn't american would it count, too?

message 15: by Monika (last edited Feb 04, 2016 07:58AM) (new)

Monika (monkatx) I know its for fun, but sometimes I have cravings to get really methodical. :D Here are our countries and detours.

1. USA- Colorado Springs - Read a book where someone gives a speech in front of a large audience
2. Saint Lucia - Read a book which has the main location (setting) as South Africa
3. United Kingdom - Glasgow - Read a book with the phrase "It takes two to tango" in a book
4. Egypt - Hurghada - Read a book where the author's first name is one of the top 100 female names in The Netherlands according to nameberry (http://nameberry.com/popular_names/Ne...)
5. Russia - Novyj Urengoj - Read a book where a character is a demon
6. Malaysia - Tawau - Read a book that has been on your "to read" shelf for more than 6 months
7. Australia - Sunshine Coast - Read a book with 21-30 chapters
8. Easter Island - Read a book with a title between 16 and 25 characters

Two detours I am not comfortable to do are Read a book which has the main location (setting) as South Africa. Since I am not a fan of animal books I associate this settings, but maybe its just me. And I definitely don't want to do Read a book with the phrase "It takes two to tango" in a book. As a reader of translations idioms just don't carry over from one language to another... Which is why I would rather do detour now since those two are the next ones. :D

I have a question about the detour: if we find a book with a speech that isn't american would it count, too?

Yes, it counts. :)

Dima | 129 comments Hello all,
This is my first time doing this so I am very excited!!

Yesterday I started listening to When the Emperor Was Divine as an audio book. The book is about the Japanese Americans during WW2.

If anyone is still looking, last year I read a book by D. Preston and Lee Child called White Fire. The story takes place in or near Colorado Springs.

Buckle up everyone, and enjoy the ride!!
Bon voyage :)

Elinaly Martina wrote: "I have a question about the detour: if we find a book with a speech that isn't american would it count, too?"

Yes, Martina, It would count for the detour, but if others are not doing detour then you need to read book set in USA or by USA author.
Thats why we need to decide whether we are going to do the detour or the task.

I'm afraid that this detour is difficult for me - how you possibly can know if someone is going to give a speech if you havent read the book :) One can only hope that someone is going to give speeches.

And if one of us is not reading the detour then we cant get max points.

I agree that Read a book with the phrase "It takes two to tango" in a book is the most difficult detour, so UK will be for TASK. :D

Monika, what if we give you examples of books that are set in South Africa, but not about the animals? Would you agree to do this detour then? :)
For example first that come into my mind are Agatha Christie The Man in the Brown Suit - no animalt only murders :)
or Lauren Beukes Moxyland - urban fantasy, science fiction, dystopia.

What are the most difficult detours for others?

message 18: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2143 comments Hi Everyone! The hardest detour for me is "It takes two to tango." quote. I'd prefer to do the USA book for this stop.

Shy The WidowMaker (booklovingmama) | 334 comments Ok so when will we decide on if doing task or detour so we can start lining up what we are reading?

Elinaly Shy The WidowMaker wrote: "Hi teammates. I am cool with going either way for this week. Do I need to create a shelf for this or where are we tracking books somewhere?"

No, you dont have to create a shelf for this (its just me - I love different shelves for different challenges, hehehee).
I think it would be best if we track the books in spreadsheet.

If you read the book, just let everyone know about it by posting here and describe it a little to see in which stop can we use it (or we can also decide that everyone checks read books directly in spreadsheet).

PS! The link to our spreadsheet in in NBRC Travel Agent 2nd post, its our itinerary, where we can add pages and make also our own charts.

message 21: by Monika (last edited Feb 04, 2016 08:29AM) (new)

Monika (monkatx) Elinaly, thank for suggestions. Those are not bad ideas, maybe I will try some of them at the next stop.

I think most people want to do USA, then I will stick with those. :) For that I am going to read CryoBurn from my favorite Lois McMaster Bujold. (I would read it anyway.)

Also we forgot about creating name for our team! I am not good with names, so anyone has any other ideas?

From Elinaly there are:
AtW Bookworm Guides
or
International Bookworm Guides

Good question! :)
Lets vote on our spreadsheet.

Click on our itinerary link (here) and choose the sheet named "VOTE".
Everyone will choose either "task" or "detour".
Majority decides! :)

Martina Forasacco | 74 comments I like the name "AtW Bookworm Guides"! :)

About the detours I'm worried about "it takes two to tango" (mostly because I don't know how it could work out in translation) and the one in Malaysia because I've only signed up 1 month ago and I can't have a "to read" book that's been on the shelf 6 months :(

This time I would like to do USA because I want to read "Furore" by Steinbeck as soon as I can :)

Elinaly Martina wrote: "About the detours /.../ and the one in Malaysia because I've only signed up 1 month ago and I can't have a "to read" book that's been on the shelf 6 months..."

Hmm, I keep wondering if in this case also the books f.e. in your home shelves count...
Should we describe this situation and ask advice or can we decide it by ourselves?
How you all think?

Team name ideas:

Readers without Borders
Follow the Reader

Love the idea to vote on all our destinations now!

I think if you are a new member (6 months or less) then a book from your home shelf (or kindle list) would count as well!

Readers without Borders
Book Binge Travelers

message 28: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly Hahahaa... great team-names - I love "Readers without Borders"!

message 29: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly By the voting sheet it looks like this week its going to be task - setting USA and authors from USA.

So lets go! :)

If you finish the book "register" it in the spreadsheet (I made new chart under voting).
If anyone has a better idea for the chart - go ahead and make it better, I dont mind at all :D
Right now it's just something I quickly made.

Dima | 129 comments I love the name "Readers Without Borders" and "Follow the Reader"!
Oh a question.. for the spell-it-out.. Do you just spell it out or do you have to read every book of the ones that you list?
or maybe I am not getting the spell-it-out concept :(

Elinaly Dima wrote: "Oh a question.. for the spell-it-out.. Do you just spell it out or do you have to read every book of the ones that you list? or ma..."

Spell-it-out rules

Using the first letter in the book’s title, the first letter of the series name, the first letter in the author’s first or last name, or the first letter of a character’s first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter in the audiobook narrators first or last name.
If you are reading a translated version, you can also use the first letter of the translator's first or last name.

As always, if the first letter of a title starts with ‘A’, ‘An’, ‘The’, etc., you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.

Example under spoiler
Look at post # 4 HERE

When we choose to take task and not detour, than to fulfill the task we can:
1. read books set in that country (f.e. USA) OR
2. read books by the author from that country (f.e. USA) OR
3. spell out the country´s name (f.e. Colorado Springs or United States of America)

Since Colorado Springs or United States of America are too long to spell out, we are reading books set in USA.

If we wanted to do spell it out then as I understand we would have to read 15 books (Colorado Springs) in a week - some of us more and some of us less, but to get max points every member has to read at least one book that could fit to spell-it-out.

When we are reading books set in USA and by USA authors for this week then we have to read alltogether 8 books (and every team member 1 book) to be able to travel to the next stop.

Shy The WidowMaker (booklovingmama) | 334 comments Thanks I am thinking on my first read and will be back.

message 36: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 3092 comments I saw the Travel Agent posted this in answer to a question, thought I would share it, as to get maximum points everyone has to read a book, but not necessarily a task or detour book. Thought this might help if at any stop a few of us find it hard to complete the chosen task or detour.

So for the detour, if you want MAXIMUM points then:
7 of you must read for the detour
The other (8th) person just needs to read any book while you are at this stop (minimum of one week).
If you just want to complete the detour and don't care about maximum points, then 4 of you must read for the detour.

For the task, again for MAXIMUM points,
6 of you must read for the task
The other (7th and 8th) person just needs to read any book while you are at this stop (minimum of one week).
If you just want to complete the task and don't care about maximum points, then there is no requirement on how many people need to read for the task.

message 37: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2143 comments I'm reading A Plain Death (Appleseed Creek, #1) by Amanda Flower for the set in USA task. Book takes place in Ohio.

message 38: by Helen (new)

Helen Bassett (hbee741) Can we add books or do we need to post the book here first?

message 39: by Helen (last edited Feb 07, 2016 11:40PM) (new)

Helen Bassett (hbee741) I finished Peach Pies and Alibis. It is set in Georgia. A mystery with characters that have special powers. I am ready to begin 2nd book.

For book set in South Africa: Mafeking Road by Herman Charles Bosman.

Thanks Angie!
This is really useful information - I assumed that all members of the team would have to do the task or detour, but I'm glad I was not right :)

So if someone of us has difficulties to read a book needed for task or detour we should let others know about it as soon as possible.

This time we need at least 6 members reading a "task-book".

NB! Our week in Colorado Springs, USA will be over on 9th Feb.
How you feel, can we move on to the next stop (all of us will have to finish a book by then) after this date? Or we can ofcourse stay longer if needed...

I would be glad to catch up other teams, though ;)

Shy The WidowMaker - how are you doing? Have you chosen the book for this week? (Since everybody else are reading for task you can read any book if you want and we still can get max points)

message 41: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly Helen wrote: "Can we add books or do we need to post the book here first?"

I think its how you want - if you want you can add the book to the spreadsheet and/or post information about your read here.

I will monitor our posts and can add the books mentioned here also to the spreadsheet.

message 42: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly Since we are the only team who doesn't have a "proper" team name yet, may I register our team as "Readers without Borders" ?

It got 5 votes, "Follow the Reader" got 3 votes.

Shy The WidowMaker (booklovingmama) | 334 comments Im going with Drink Deep. Its set in Chicago.

message 44: by Helen (new)

Helen Bassett (hbee741) Readers without Borders gets my vote.

message 45: by Monika (new)

Monika (monkatx) I like readers without borders too, so one more vote for it from me.

message 46: by Elinaly (new)

Elinaly Nice - everyone are reading for task!

We also have to decide what will we do next.
Since its kinda tie right now, it comes to Shy The WidowMaker to say the final word :)

If everyone else (besides Monika) will be ok to read a book set in South-Africa (detour) then we dont have to detour for Russia (demon in book, since more people are "against" it)
And Monika you could read any book for the next stop (St Lucia) and we still would get the max points.

So what you think Shy?

Shy The WidowMaker (booklovingmama) | 334 comments That's fine with me. I am sure I can find something set in S Africa.

Shy The WidowMaker (booklovingmama) | 334 comments Readers without borders is cool with me also.

Cheers :)
