I am not good at coming up with names. For task, I choose Read books set USA. But will go along with the choice of the other team members.

Since we can use detour only 5 times, I agree that in current stop (USA) we should read books set in USA or written by American authors - this should be easy enough to do within a week - or how you all feel?

As a reminder:
TASKS

For maximum points we have to take 5 detours with everyone participating. I know that reading books or authors settled in USA is very appealing, but I am actually finding current detour to be really easy compared to some future ones on list. I am going to read both books either way this week so it doesn't really matter to me as we can use all books we read during challenge in upcoming weeks.

DETOURS

I meant maximum points when we do the task (not detour).

I also find other detours easier than this one (read a book where someone gives a speech in front of a large audience) and other countries are more difficult ones to find books set in or authors from.
My opinion is that USA is in that meaning perfect to do this time the task and not the detour.

But of course we should vote what to do in this week.
Or just see - maybe all of us find a speech in the books we started from today :)

I know its for fun, but sometimes I have cravings to get really methodical. :D Here are our countries and detours.

1. USA- Colorado Springs - Read a book where someone gives a speech in front of a large audience
2. Saint Lucia - Read a book which has the main location (setting) as South Africa
3. United Kingdom - Glasgow - Read a book with the phrase "It takes two to tango" in a book
4. Egypt - Hurghada - Read a book where the author's first name is one of the top 100 female names in The Netherlands according to nameberry (http://nameberry.com/popular_names/Ne...)
5. Russia - Novyj Urengoj - Read a book where a character is a demon
6. Malaysia - Tawau - Read a book that has been on your "to read" shelf for more than 6 months
7. Australia - Sunshine Coast - Read a book with 21-30 chapters
8. Easter Island - Read a book with a title between 16 and 25 characters

Two detours I am not comfortable to do are Read a book which has the main location (setting) as South Africa. Since I am not a fan of animal books I associate this settings, but maybe its just me. And I definitely don't want to do Read a book with the phrase "It takes two to tango" in a book. As a reader of translations idioms just don't carry over from one language to another... Which is why I would rather do detour now since those two are the next ones. :D

Hello all,
This is my first time doing this so I am very excited!!

Yesterday I started listening to When the Emperor Was Divine as an audio book. The book is about the Japanese Americans during WW2.

If anyone is still looking, last year I read a book by D. Preston and Lee Child called White Fire. The story takes place in or near Colorado Springs.

Yes, Martina, It would count for the detour, but if others are not doing detour then you need to read book set in USA or by USA author.
Thats why we need to decide whether we are going to do the detour or the task.

I'm afraid that this detour is difficult for me - how you possibly can know if someone is going to give a speech if you havent read the book :) One can only hope that someone is going to give speeches.

And if one of us is not reading the detour then we cant get max points.

I agree that Read a book with the phrase "It takes two to tango" in a book is the most difficult detour, so UK will be for TASK. :D

Monika, what if we give you examples of books that are set in South Africa, but not about the animals? Would you agree to do this detour then? :)
For example first that come into my mind are Agatha Christie The Man in the Brown Suit - no animalt only murders :)
or Lauren Beukes Moxyland - urban fantasy, science fiction, dystopia.

No, you dont have to create a shelf for this (its just me - I love different shelves for different challenges, hehehee).
I think it would be best if we track the books in spreadsheet.

If you read the book, just let everyone know about it by posting here and describe it a little to see in which stop can we use it (or we can also decide that everyone checks read books directly in spreadsheet).

PS! The link to our spreadsheet in in NBRC Travel Agent 2nd post, its our itinerary, where we can add pages and make also our own charts.

Elinaly, thank for suggestions. Those are not bad ideas, maybe I will try some of them at the next stop.

I think most people want to do USA, then I will stick with those. :) For that I am going to read CryoBurn from my favorite Lois McMaster Bujold. (I would read it anyway.)

Also we forgot about creating name for our team! I am not good with names, so anyone has any other ideas?

About the detours I'm worried about "it takes two to tango" (mostly because I don't know how it could work out in translation) and the one in Malaysia because I've only signed up 1 month ago and I can't have a "to read" book that's been on the shelf 6 months :(

This time I would like to do USA because I want to read "Furore" by Steinbeck as soon as I can :)

Hmm, I keep wondering if in this case also the books f.e. in your home shelves count...
Should we describe this situation and ask advice or can we decide it by ourselves?

Spell-it-out rules

Using the first letter in the book’s title, the first letter of the series name, the first letter in the author’s first or last name, or the first letter of a character’s first, last, or nick-name, or the first letter in the audiobook narrators first or last name.
If you are reading a translated version, you can also use the first letter of the translator's first or last name.

As always, if the first letter of a title starts with ‘A’, ‘An’, ‘The’, etc., you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word.

When we choose to take task and not detour, than to fulfill the task we can:
1. read books set in that country (f.e. USA) OR
2. read books by the author from that country (f.e. USA) OR
3. spell out the country´s name (f.e. Colorado Springs or United States of America)

Since Colorado Springs or United States of America are too long to spell out, we are reading books set in USA.

If we wanted to do spell it out then as I understand we would have to read 15 books (Colorado Springs) in a week - some of us more and some of us less, but to get max points every member has to read at least one book that could fit to spell-it-out.

When we are reading books set in USA and by USA authors for this week then we have to read alltogether 8 books (and every team member 1 book) to be able to travel to the next stop.

I saw the Travel Agent posted this in answer to a question, thought I would share it, as to get maximum points everyone has to read a book, but not necessarily a task or detour book. Thought this might help if at any stop a few of us find it hard to complete the chosen task or detour.

So for the detour, if you want MAXIMUM points then:
7 of you must read for the detour
The other (8th) person just needs to read any book while you are at this stop (minimum of one week).
If you just want to complete the detour and don't care about maximum points, then 4 of you must read for the detour.

For the task, again for MAXIMUM points,
6 of you must read for the task
The other (7th and 8th) person just needs to read any book while you are at this stop (minimum of one week).
If you just want to complete the task and don't care about maximum points, then there is no requirement on how many people need to read for the task.

This is really useful information - I assumed that all members of the team would have to do the task or detour, but I'm glad I was not right :)

So if someone of us has difficulties to read a book needed for task or detour we should let others know about it as soon as possible.

This time we need at least 6 members reading a "task-book".

NB! Our week in Colorado Springs, USA will be over on 9th Feb.
How you feel, can we move on to the next stop (all of us will have to finish a book by then) after this date? Or we can ofcourse stay longer if needed...

I would be glad to catch up other teams, though ;)

And Monika you could read any book for the next stop (St Lucia) and we still would get the max points.
