I finished
by Georgette Heyer this morning. A most enjoyable mystery, my first by Heyer and I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a cozy mystery, involving the murder of a cantankerous man, unloved by pretty well everybody associated with him. Inspector Harding is called down from Scotland Yard to investigate and ultimately solves the crime. I liked his character very much and also that of his plodding Sgt. There were also other characters I liked very much, especially Miss Fawcett. No reliance on fancy CSI type technology, basically interviews and following up on questions, but so totally satisfying of a story. The ending was also satisfying and had a little twist I didn't really see coming. Not a book I'll think about for years to come, but just a perfect, enjoyable read. (5 stars). Not sure what's next on the agenda, but I'll get around to picking something a bit later.

I finished The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine by Alexander McCall Smith. Mma Ramotswe, owner of "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" takes a vacation - but not really. She's soon drawn into helping people and delving into tricky situations. An enjoyable addition to the series. 4 stars. My complete review:

Completed my second reading of Vertigo - for anyone considering this book, a reread is a definite plus. This book is just stunning. Before I post about it, though, I'll be reading a book mentioned in this one, The Light That Failed by Kipling, (88) pp., which may have some bearing on this one.

I'm putting the book on my TBR list.

I recently watched it too. Mr. Film Critic wasn't impressed, but I enjoyed it. The basic novel elements are there, but the book is still very different. Today I got Vertigo: The Making of a Hitchcock Classic in the mail so I'll try to get that one soon.

new to this group. Am currently reading The Black Box by Michael Connelly. Read some poor reviews of it before I started but am really enjoying it. Mind you I have always enjoyed his books so I am biased.

Welcome to our group, Richard. One of my online friends once described me as phobic due to my practice of never reading reviews prior to reading a book, but I like to go into a novel (or whatever) without expectations. Besides, not everyone sees things the same way in terms of reading experience.

Used to feel this way about Jeffrey Deaver & Kathy Reichs but have gone off them a bit of late
I just finished Southern Bastards, Vol. 1: Here Was a Man, an action-packed graphic novel with a plot not too unlike that of Walking Tall.
Just posted my thoughts about The Investigation, which is billed as a crime novel but really isn't. Lovely book.
Just finished Weirdo by Cathi Unsworth. The book is alternates between the time of the murder and 20 years later. Unlike most mysteries, the killer is more obvious than the victim. Stop by my page for full review.
Just finished To the Power of Three by Laura Lippman. Yet another outstanding standalone from Lippman.
Have just finished Death of a Dreamer
by M.C. Beaton. I love her cosy mysteries....my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Reading the comments about vertigo, I watched the film years ago and it blew my mind; since then I've got a love for Hitchcock films I adore Rear Window, The birds, Psycho I so wish I had read before seeing the films

Just in case anyone's interested,
Rear Window - Story Collection, by Cornell Woolrich
"The Birds" you can find in Don't Look Now: Selected Stories of Daphne Du Maurier
Psycho, by Robert Bloch
I have to say that Du Maurier's story just blew me away with how very good it is -- to me, it was much more intense than the movie.

Ahhhhh. Camilleri is one of my very favorite authors, great for a relaxing fun read. His books are the only series novels where I actually care about the main character's personal life.

Have just finished the poisoned island by Lloyd Shepherd which is fantastic a definite must read for people who lived c j sansoms shardlake series
I recently read Southern Bastards, Vol. 1: Here Was a Man and Southern Bastards, Vol. 2: Gridiron, graphic novels set a small town in Alabama. The first book is reminiscent of Walking Tall, only more violent. The second is fascinating in that it tells the back story of Coach Boss, the villain from the first book, portraying him in an unexpectedly sympathetic light. Unfortunately, book 3 of this series isn't due out until May.

series.
Started off the new year by reading the classic mystery novel And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. I decided to start a detective series. A lot of people recommended the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly, so I decided to give it a go. Luckily, my bookstore had The Black Echo, so I am currently reading that.
I am reading a nonfiction book, Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic, by Sam Quinones. The war on drugs is such a joke.
Bill wrote: "I started Trent's Last Case by E.C. Bentley and I like how it has started."
Ironically, it's actually the first in the Trent series, despite the title!

Still reading
& I'm really enjoying it so far, love the whole curse thing! Starting
for BR, it has mixed reviews so I'm really excited to see where I will fit in :)
Last night I finished The Pecan Man, and wish to thank the several friends who encouraged me to read it. It’s an excellent book. It’s also short. My review is here. I also finished off In the Garden of Iden, the first book in Kage Baker’s The Company time travel series starring the Spaniard Mendoza, who I just found out is a girl. My review is here.
Just finished a preview copy of Quentin Bates' new Icelandic murder / mystery, Thin Ice. And it's *excellent*. I was a bit ho-hum about the first book in the series (and said so), but now they are really intriguing, multi-layered investigations. Tight plot, very intriguing characters. And they work well as stand-alones, too. Each book is very much self-contained so although the central detective, Gunna, is a fixed point of reference, you don't need to have read all the others to become completely immersed in this one...
It's out in a coupla months, I think, and definitely one to grab.
Just finished The Hitwoman and the Sacrificial Lamb and Crime Almost Pays: Starring Key West's "Bumsnoops"
I finished I Am Pilgrim
by Terry Hayes. An American secret agent is tasked with stopping the complete destruction of the U.S planned by a cunning Arab terrorist.
Excellent spy story/detective story/thriller. 4.5 stars

Finished These shallow graves by Jennifer Donnelly and it was really good and so refreshing to read a book without all the modern day technology, starting the taking by Dean Koontz
@ Barbara couldn't agree with you more. enjoyed your review and your french Quarter shirt in your profile pic. Mardi Gras starts in earnest this weekend. I am ready!

In my opinion the movie was really good, but I say that not having read the book yet. That could change after I read it, lol.

I have the film recorded & thought I best read the book 1st. Don't know why but thought this was best way round to do it. Am about 170 pages in now & have an idea who done it?
