Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments I finished Before the Fall Before the Fall by Noah Hawley by Noah Hawley.

After the crash of a private plane, the only survivors are a recovering alcoholic artist and a 4-year-old boy. The story revolves around the backstories of the crash victims, the investigation into the incident , and what's going on with characters of interest now. This book got lots of great reviews but it's 3 stars for me.

Sean Peters | 155 comments Red Right Hand (Michael Hendricks #2) by Chris Holm

Thanks to Net Galley, the publishers and the author Chris Holm for a ARC Copy.

After very much enjoying "The Killing Kind", the Michael Hendricks book 1, and also the quick short story "The Approach", I was very happy to be approved number 2 in the series with our anti hero Michael Hendricks.

An anti-hero with a difference, an assassin who goes after assassins.

When a family stops near the Golden Gate Bridge to record a special anniversary message at the very spot their grandparents once posed for a photo nearly forty years ago, things take a tragic turn as a tugboat carrying explosives slams into the bridge, detonating on impact, causing massive destruction.

Upon seeing the family’s recorded mobile footage of the moments just before the explosion, Thompson makes a startling discovery. Frank Segreti’s face was captured on the video, signaling that he’s apparently alive and well, which is a shock to the FBI, as they previously thought him to be dead. This starts a great chain of plots and twists.

Seven years prior, Frank Segreti came to the FBI offering key evidence about a shady organization comprised of different crime leaders, known only as the "Council". In return for his betrayal, the Council hired someone to take him out. Until now, Segreti was believed to have been killed in an explosion., but now very much alive in this mobile footage.

Thompson hopes that Segreti can once again help lead her to the Council, but keeping him alive–especially once Council members find out he’s still breathing–poses a real problem. Thinking outside of the box, she turns to another man wanted by the FBI, hitman Michael Hendricks, to keep Segreti safe.

Michael Hendricks has spent the last year coming to terms with his friend Lester being murdered by an assassin sent by the council to kill Michael Hendricks, he survived with his life but is determined to seek revenge on the members of "The Council"

This action packed, rollercoaster of a ride thriller keeps your attention with multiple storylines that you know are going to come together nicely.

Some great characters in this entertaining book, and all I can say is read book one quickly and get ready for this book when it comes out in mid September.

A clear four star from me.

Finished with The Wicked Boy: The Mystery of a Victorian Child Murderer, by Kate Summerscale. I'm thinking it's a 3-star book although I'll keep thinking about it for a while. The murder story is fascinating, but she could have ended this book a lot sooner with much less padding with all sorts of irrelevant details. I mean, it's like research is fun (at least for me) but you have to know when to hold back when it comes to the writing.

Nice review. I started to read the book but decided oh, I do not want to be in the head of a serial killer. It seems the series is getting progressively darker. HP did as well but on an entirely different level.

Faith | 417 comments I don't mind dark, but serial killers and other forays into the depths of clinical psychology are not my thing. And the author does not understand that less is more. Maybe her next book will be better.

I agree. Authors tend to beat that drum way too much. I used to be fine with it but a few years ago I decided that I have read enough of it.

Sean Peters | 155 comments The Damascus Threat (Dominic Verrazzano Thriller #1) by Matt Rees

Thank you to Net Galley, the publishers and the author for an ARC Copy.

This book is a four star book.

A former Middle East foreign correspondent, Matt Rees is an expert on the war on terror. With his new ICE Thriller series, he opens the door to a part of United States Homeland Security that has rarely been explored before.

This fast-paced, action-packed first in a new thriller series from Rees—best known for The Fourth Assassin and three other crime novels featuring Palestinian sleuth Omar Yussef—introduces Dominic Verrazzano, a former Green Beret and current U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agent.

When a doctor specializing in chemical weapons is murdered on the doorstep of the ICE Manhattan offices while trying to reach Verrazzano, the agent becomes entangled in a mystery surrounding a plot to unleash a chemical attack somewhere in New York City.

Verrazzano travels from New York to Syria and back again battling a wide variety of bad guys every step of the way. It seemed like he was near death every few pages in this story, Threats ranged from sarin gas to drowning to every hazard in between.

My thoughts are great action story with a difference, well paced, great characters in his Ice Team.

I will look forward to the next in the series.
