Andrea Rodrigues (andilovesreading) | 8 comments Spoiled for choice. Didn't know what to begin and I'm currently bored so started a couple of books. The two mystery books I'm reading are "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux and "The House of Death" by Satyajit Ray.

I'm halfway done through Phantom and I don't know if its my mood, but not that captivated by it (although I liked it so far) and started reading other books.

The House of Death is my first book by Satyajit Ray, who is an Oscar-winning filmmaker. Just read the prologue so far. Hope it lives up to its name.

I hope I'm in better reading mood next week.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments I finished Tricky Twenty-Two Tricky Twenty-Two (Stephanie Plum, #22) by Janet Evanovich by Janet Evanovich.

Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, is after bail-skipping college student Gobbles while also helping security expert Ranger protect a businessman and his wife. The story has the usual funny hijinks of most books in the series. 3.5 stars.

Finished with I'm Thinking of Ending Things, by Iain Reid. It's sort of a crime novel, but more psychological in nature. Continuing Black Wings Has My Angel, excellent '50s noir.

Tom Mathews | 1001 comments I just finished Love in a Dry Season, an engaging Southern Noir by Civil War historian Shelby Foote. It totally sucked me in but I get the feeling that in the end Foote let his characters off easy.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments I finished Concealed in Death Concealed in Death (In Death, #38) by J.D. Robb by J.D. Robb.

In this 38th book in the series Lt. Eve Dallas investigates when the bodies of 12 teenage girls are discovered in a building being renovated by her billionaire husband Roarke. I'm in the minority but I didn't especially like this book. 2.5 stars for me.

Great review! I completely agree with what you've written, but as a die-hard JD Robb fan myself would really recommend starting the series from the beginning - the characterisation is the best part of the series for me. Happy reading!

We recently lost one of our very best friends, so we're off Friday to his memorial service in Houston., back home Sunday. Very sad, really; he was still in his 40s.

Tom Mathews | 1001 comments At the recommendation of GR friends, I've just started reading The North Water. I can tell already that it is going to be a pretty brutal tale. After just two chapters he's made some of Cormac McCarthy's stories look like Goodnight Moon. It is reminiscent of Jack London at his best.

Why, suh, how can you say that? I happen to be a card-carrying member of the GR Pulp Fiction group. That said, I do believe that variety is the spice of life and, based on your list, it appears that you share that sentiment.

On the edge of finishing The Monster's Daughter. The actual premise is kind of strange, but on the whole, it's very good and I'd say unique. The book focuses a lot on conditions during Apartheid in South Africa.

Finished. Kudos to the author -- this book was very cleverly constructed. While you're keeping up with the ongoing mystery, you are taken through the history of apartheid in South Africa beginning in 1901. The blurb for once is actually spot on -- "A killer is on the loose, in a country that can't escape its past." Very well done.
