Reading A to Z - The Shelf Edition

To Read-Spell by shelves. There are some shelves populated on worksheet, here, if you need some suggestions.

Your options:

2. Read-Spell (by shelves) PICK A SHELF (or anything you want!); OR
3. Read all 26 letters / shelves

ONE condition: books read MUST already be on your tbr prior to 1 January 2016

Example:

P - plays: Hamlet
I - inspirational: Tuesdays with Morrie
C - crime: The Cuckoo’s Calling
K - kids: Where The Wild Things Are
A - anthology: Zombies Vs. Unicorns
S - sociology: Freakonomics

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments i'm confused - are we not doing it like we did last year - do we have to spell of a shelf?

Dee, you can (1) pick a word and spell it out like the example or (2) you can use your name as the word to spell out or (3) you can use the worksheet and read from one shelf for each letter of the alphabet.

I am going to use the alphabet myself.

No - Moving Mountains have always been different each year, Dee. Hence, the "Ed" for edition :)

Basically, it's a Spell-Read except that instead of using titles / authors names we're using shelves.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments ok, I think I have my phrase...

10/24

Tackling TBR one book at a time

T - teen - I Hunt Killers - 6/24/16 - I’ll have to say, I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would – it was gory without going overboard and a well written story; looking forward to reading the next one - 3.5 stars
A - Angels - Revenant
C - contemporary - Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda
K - kids - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
L - literature - The Picture of Dorian Gray*
I - inspirational - The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics - Currently Reading
N - new adult - Lick - 6/2/16 - listening to this kicked off a binge listen of the entire series, so I guess that meant it was good, haha! It was a solid listen, not completely mind-blowing, but engaging nonetheless - 3.5 stars
G - gothic - An Inquiry Into Love and Death
T - time-travel - The Here and Now
B - bdsm - Sweet Temptation
R - realistic fiction - The Running Dream - 5/26/16 - this book tore my heart out in places, the author did a great job in getting into the psyche of a teenage amputee and her desire to regain her normal (as a rising track star)…I can’t deny that there might have been some tears - 4 stars
O - owned but not read - Vampire Academy - 6/21/16 - I’ll admit that I still prefer Mead’s adult writing, over her more YA focused, even though I know she got her beginning with the vampire academy; it was a tad too teenage angsty for me - 3 stars
N - non-fiction - Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science - 5/11/16 - Gawande has an engaging written style that sucked me in and I liked how he could admit that as a doctor he makes mistakes – something that many people don’t want to acknowledge; I picked up one of his other books after reading this one and plan on reading his third one in the near future - 4 stars
E - erotic romance - Backstage Pass
B - book club - The Forgotten Garden (audiobook)
O - Occult Detective - Grave Peril - 5/12/16 - when I was listening to this, I honestly felt like there was something that had occurred between books 2 and 3 that I had missed; it just felt very disjointed
O - Overdrive - A Constellation of Vital Phenomena
K - kindle - The Paper Magician - 3/28/16 - this book was kind of weird, not necessarily in a bad way, but I felt like it meandered a bit too much before the story actually started; I liked the idea of people who have magic to manipulate items like paper and stone, but didn’t really understand why paper wasn’t so cool - 3 stars
A - adventure - Assassin's Apprentice
T - Translated - Les Misérables
A - anthology - Dangerous Women - 1/12/15 - solid 3 stars between all the contributions, there were a few where i was like WTF, and others that I really enjoyed. Have a few new authors to check out as well
T - thriller - The Keeper of Lost Causes (audiobook)
I - illness - Love Comes Silently
M - mystery - The Book of Speculation - 7/7/16 - this FINALLY came in at the library (I think I was on the hold list for like 3 months; but ultimately was kind of disappointed – it felt very disjointed and meandering and I never felt like I connected with any of the characters - 2.5 stars
E - erotica - Unleashed - 7/31/16 - I don’t know if I would call this erotica, yeah it was hot, but since it was written pre-50 shades, it was also decently written and had a good storyline – although I wanted to hit both of them over the head occasionally because of sheer stupidity - 3 stars

Tien - Given that my phrase is so long, I'd like to be able to read books in series I started prior to 2016, even if I add the book in 2016. I don't like to bloat my TBR so I only add the next in the series to my TBR and add the rest as I finish the latest one.

That way, I work on old books from my TBR and series that have been languishing on my TBR for a while.

seriously, you guys are putting me to shame!

Julie, yes, the books you read for this challenge must already be on your tbr prior 1 Jan 2016 as well as being on those shelves. The purpose of this challenge in to read off your existing tbr.

[Edited] Julie, you're reading a lot more than D.G. & I've just okay-ed her reading series even if later books aren't added until 2016, so you're welcome to do the same, if you wish.

All I did was copy & paste & sort the top shelves from the first 5 pages (I think it was 5 or maybe it was 3, *shrugs*) and those weren't there... I'll check them out tomorrow.

I'm being super ambitious - my phrase has 92 letters not including the commas - I wasn't sure what I could use for those shelves. :)

But maybe I could add the commas as "free shelf" or something like that, hahahaha. Now that I'm going to try 90+ books, I should maybe go for broke!!

You can repeat as many shelves as you like... there are plenty of books to fit ;)

What do you mean by making up more names? If you mean to do more after you've finished your current phrase, then yes, you can but phase yourself as the main challenge for 2016 is still to come ;)

I have a category called zen I might use instead, but maybe I might try to stretch some. The shelf sorting is going to kill me lol.

Julie Webb | 126 comments Am I doing this wrong? I thought we were supposed to use our own lists. Are we suppose use listopia lists and pick from there? I feel like such a blond right now lol.

I think we are supposed to use the shelves that Tien has listed on the spreadsheet that is linked in the first post. It is a Google Doc spreadsheet that she has done that breaks down the top shelves by alphabet. Then you go to that shelf on Goodreads and pick a book that was on your TBR before January 1, 2016

Well that's easier :) thanks

Tien - when we go to the spreadsheet, are we supposed to be able to click on the link to get to the shelves here? If so, it doesn't work for me.
