Option 3 - I read The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett which celebrates the art of architecture and building.

Option 4 - I read The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman - this book's plot is about resistance fighters in Bulgaria during the time of the Iron Curtain, so I think it fits the idea of individuals fighting for freedom from oppressive societies.
