Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I haven't been reporting the series I've started and then decided to go no further. I just finished Throne of Glass which is book one in that series. I don't intend on going any further. Last week it was Phoenix Rising, another series I've decided not to pursue.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Do you keep a list of those series you abandon??

message 203: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I am purposely trying not to start new series. I'm trying to work my way through existing ones. I'm going to try to kill another series before starting a new one. The Passage series will be one and the Southern Reach trilogy another one. Then i can start two new series.

No. I just don't put the next book on my wishlist.

I have a whack of first books already purchased either on ebook or audiobook. So I'm doomed. LOL!

I tried that and failed miserably so gave up. :)

Too bad, I thought it would be interesting to know on average how many series we all abandon.
We're all so keen on starting them I assume there must be a hefty percentage we quit.
I guess I might go sort out mine and see.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I almost wish we had never even started the darn lists. I agree that it helps us focus on figuring out what books we needed to finish for some series and it was fun discovering old friends, but is it holding us back from enjoying our reading? I think I should not feel guilty for wanting to read more new series, but I do. I'm not a serial killer any more.

Daniel (dward526) Ok, Here We Go

✔The Saxon Stories reread (9/9) by Bernard Cornwell- read this one earlier this year, and put it on this list to make me feel like I am getting somewhere :)
The Night Angel trilogy (2/3) by Brent Weeks - I have been meaning to finish this one
The Shadow Campaigns (2/3) by Django Wexler
Mistborn Reread (1/3) by Brandon Sanderson

I'm having the opposite reaction, I love that this has made me look at all the series I have and actually finish some of them. Because I'm typically a serial starter but not serial killer.

Nice choices, how was the Malazan?? This is one of those series I've wanted to start for about 8 years and never quite made time for it.

Daniel (dward526) Dawn wrote: "This is one of those series I've wanted to start for about 8 years and never quite made time for it. "

I have read the first one and am working on Deadhouse Gates and I am really enjoying it. I own the complete series, collected from used books shops over time and have been meaning to sit down and read it. Carpe Diem!

message 213: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I've collected a few myself but haven't taken that leap into actually reading them yet. :)

message 214: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Oh i have plenty of first books in the series bought and waiting on my kindle but i am just holding off reading them at the moment. Unless a buddy read or a challenge comes up that one might fit.

Malazan is a series i want to read too. Someday!

message 215: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Welcome to the madness, Daniel. Wow - six series I have never added to my TBR list. The only one I have is the last - TBR.

I have a slew of 1st-in-series books on my Nook, Sarah. I keep putting them off too. Most of the new series that I did start, I was able to use on my Geo challenge. I have been able to use 3 of the 6 Amelia Peabody books on tasks. I really should not be unhappy about starting them, for that reason, after the fact. Some of the other series books I have been able to apply too.

message 216: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Sarah wrote: "Malazan is a series i want to read too. Someday! ..."

Maybe if it wasn't so time consuming to read a series that massive we'd have started by now??

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Dawn wrote: "We're all so keen on starting them I assume there must be a hefty percentage we quit.

I might do that myself. I could set up a shelf called "Series Quit". Maybe one day when I'm looking for something to do.

message 218: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I started a list on FictFact and put in all the series I could find and remember that I've quit. It's at an even 100 right now.

I don't know if that's a big number or not in the general scheme of things.

message 219: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments 100 that you've quit?

Okay, now I'm curious. I have all mine listed on FictFact as well. That might be the easiest way to figure it out. But not tonight.

message 220: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, that must be my problem. I need to quit more. LOL!

message 221: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I use fict fact to show I've quit series - i just remove them from my next book list. I'm not sure how many i won't be continuing with but it's a lot lower than 100.

message 222: by Susan (new)

Susan Guard | 695 comments I must confess -- I just finished binge reading a series. I found the first one (Enchanted, Inc. by Shanna Swendson) for the geocaching challenge and read it only because it had a frog on the cover. It was light and frivolous and a really quick read. No real social redeeming value but fun. And then I got hooked on the story and had to read the rest...Six books later I've killed another series...

message 223: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Sounds like a fun series, Susan! I like when that happens.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Janice wrote: "100 that you've quit?

Yep, I call the list Abandoned and I have 100 series on it, everything from Harry Potter to Nero Wolf to Temeraire.

I've still got 207 others to read though!

message 225: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Harry Potter? I love Harry Potter. I've read the books, seen the movies, and now I'm listening to the audiobooks.

There are series that are relatively old, but I don't consider that I've quit them because it's not my intention to do so. However, there are those that I've intentionally quit, like the two I mentioned a few messages above.

I have quite a few that I want to get back to, and a whack I haven't even started yet. I don't think I want to know the actual numbers.

message 226: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Yeah, I never quite got around to reading the last Harry Potter book and after about 7 years I figured I was never going to read it, so.....

lol, I guess the longest 'in progress' series would be a whole other question?? I've got a few that I haven't read in a dozen years but I have every intention of getting back to them sometime.

message 227: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I guess my list just lingers until I find the books or get tired of looking at it and start crossing more things off. I don't think I have an actual Abandoned list on FictFact. It has been a long time since I updated it. I doubt that all of the 1st series books on my GR TBR list are accounted for there either. I think all of the ones I own are listed, but they are not on my list in this thread because I have not read them yet.

I am glad I have a list, after all. I think I stopped reading some series because I could never remember which ones I had read and did not want to buy duplicates (before I started using the library and Overdrive as much as I do now).

I am constantly amazed at what is and what is not available from the library though. I just found out that only the first 6 Amelia Peabody books were available on audio on Overdrive. Unless I want to buy them on Audible (if they are available), I have to read the rest in print, if I can find them. My library only has the next two in print. I have started several series this way, only to find out the next ones are no-where to be found. They only have the first three Green Knowe books. What about the other three??? No copies in print either. They only had the newest Miss Marple #1 in print and ebook. No others are available in their catalogue, so if I want to read them all, I have to find and buy used paperbacks. That is where I am with Nero Wolfe, Zanth, and even many of the Terry Pratchet Discworld books. I can't find them as ebooks. The used paperback book store in my area only caries Romance. I could not believe it when I stopped to check it out! Can you imagine????

message 228: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I'm more amazed at what is not available at my library. It seems that I use ILL more than my own library because they don't carry the books I'm looking for. They don't have Death on the Nile. The copy I'm getting is being transferred from a small library a couple hours north of us. It seems these smaller libraries have a better selection.

message 229: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments What really bugs me is when they have the whole series, except for the first one. That is annoying.

I am lucky with the Peabody books though, my library has the first 12 in audio. I think my sister has most of them if I need to switch to print later.

message 230: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished the first Inspector Konrad Sejer book and Death on the Nile and updated my lists. I decided to start the 3rd Stolker and Holmes book, since I already bought it. It may take a back seat with the buddy reads coming up. The 2nd group read has me adding another series to my list, with Miss Marple.

message 231: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I'm not sure you can be a serial killer anymore, you seem to be more of a serial starter!

message 232: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I know! That's what I said a couple of posts back. I bought three Miss Marple books at the library sale, and another Inspector Sejer, but I need to find 2-4. Not one single book showed up for any of my other series though. I added some Star Trek titles, but they go to another series, according to GR. I think they are re-issues or the series has been renamed by a different publisher. I can't figure it out. I feel like I have seen the the author's name before and read at least one of the titles I saw. Now there are 17 books. Gahhh!

I found a stack of ST books in my laundry room when I was cleaning out a cupboard. I have no idea when they were stashed there. I know that I have read them all. I just need to look them all up and check them off.

Right on - you killers!

message 235: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just realized, when I was reading the "What are you reading?" thread that I never added Anne of Green Gables to my series list.
I read the first one when I was a kid and never knew that there were other books. I re-read it again a couple of years ago, intending to read more in the series, but never marked the next book or added it to my TBR list. I think I will not add it.

I just finished my 25th Nero Wolfe audio book. Only two left that I can get from my library. I have two paperbacks to read, but it will not be the same as listening to Michael Pritchard. I love how he tells Archie to "shut up" and say "fooie", in his Nero voice.

I just downloaded a Discworld ebook for my Geo challenge called The Fifth Elephant. I will have to go back and pick up Jingo later. I like the City Watch guys.

Jannene | 3124 comments I just killed the Lacey Flint series. Finished A Dark and Twisted Tide.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I've crossed off another orphan - book 6 in the Matthew Corbett series, Freedom of the Mask. It ended on a cliff-hanger, so obviously there will be another orphan down the road.

message 244: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I finished 15th Affair. I had already finished the Women's Murder Club in 2015, so I considered this one an orphan. It left with a major open end and no new one on the horizon. Hate that.

message 245: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I read another orphan - The Death of Dulgath. I'll be starting Michael's new series, Legends of the First Empire, soon. I pre-ordered it, and it's being released tomorrow.

message 246: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I really want to get to my orphans, but I cannot get to them with all of the Geo challenge books I still want to read. Only one fits and I keep getting email from FictFact about new books every other day.

message 247: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I feel your pain. The Curse of Tenth Grave is being released tomorrow. Another orphan looking for a home on my shelf.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I finished another orphan - The Curse of Tenth Grave. The next book in this series isn't out until 2017.

Kristie | 19138 comments I've finished a couple of series this year, but started a whole lot more. Some of the series I've begun are really good too. I think I'm going to have to get back to killing them off. So much for leaving my life of crime. ;)

message 250: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I'm working my way through The Night Huntress Universe. I'd started The Night Huntress series but discovered the author has a recommended reading order that weaves in an out of various series in the NH Universe.

I've finished The Night Huntress World, which consists of two books - First Drop of Crimson & Eternal Kiss of Darkness.
