MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I find most of his stuff to be quite interesting - but I get what you mean. I'm totally a Sergio Palleroni and Frank Lloyd Wright girl but I enjoy the artistic-ness of Gehry.

LOL I totally read that as 'starch-itecture' and thought that it was referring to the rippling sheet look of the building and then I was like "IS THAT FOR REAL A THING??"

...And then I googled and realized that it was 'star-chitecture'. And now I feel silly. Except not, because I don't follow architecture stuff at all. LOL

Now I'm going to think 'starch-itecture' when I see a Gehry design.

Lucky. One of my co-workers at my last job LOOOOOOOOOOVED him and subjected us all to his "music" whenever possible.

message 1837: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes ^Ewww. That sounds terrible. I am thankful my musical taste stopped evolving for the most part in 1996.

The Simpsons Tapped Out. It's a collecting and organizing game. You get to build your own Springfield which is super fun. I'm trying to build the racetrack and Captain's houseboat right now. It's a nice bit of trivia as you go through quests from the series sometimes.

That is cool.

message 1845: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Just thought I'd throw this out there...

There are a few old classic movies that I love. Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, any John Wayne movie... I've been making an effort to pick up a few missed classics and watch them and/or re-aquaint myself with others I can't quite remember. I know I've watched African Queen with my Dad when I was a kid, but couldn't tell you much about it. Same with Ben Hur, Gone With The Wind, Cleopatra, etc. So I'm starting with Casablanca. But, what about My Fair Lady, Laurence of Arabia, Bridge Over River Kwai, Breakfast At Tiffany's? Anyone have some favourites they'd recommend?

The same goes with children's lit. For a voracious reader, there are huge gaps in my childhood. I was at the whim of what the local librarian felt like buying from year to year, or what was available when I went in. I've read all the Roald Dahls and Lloyd Alexanders, but no Judy Bloom. Neither have I read Matilda or Harriet the Spy, although I have ordered the latter. I still have to get caught up on Watership Down as well. So again, appealing to your wisdom. Are there any classics you'd recommend my picking up?

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Have you seen Roman Holiday? It's a chick-flick/romance, but it's pretty good. I love Audrey Hepburn.

message 1847: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I haven't, but I'll check it out. Thank you!

I've seen many documentaries about Audrey Hepburn. She seemed lovely, and did great humanitarian work. However, I've never seen a single movie that she's in. Perhaps this is the one!

message 1848: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments It's my favorite, of the ones I've seen. Breakfast at Tiffany's was ok, and Sabrina was pretty decent.

We could probably start a whole thread on classic movies.

message 1849: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Chris,

They had a 3 in 1 DVD with Roman Holiday, Sabrina and Breakfast at at Tiffany's. I love Gregory Peck from To Kill A Mockingbird. Can't wait to see him in a romance! Would people be into a classic movie thread?

Nicki,

I'm going to look up you list and pick some to start with. I love animal books as well as fantasy. I've been eyeing up The Borrowers for ages as well. If you enjoyed them, I'm at a book store tomorrow. Perhaps that's where I'll start. Thanks for the advice!

message 1850: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Jul 27, 2014 01:01PM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Laurel, I'm a sucker for The Sound Of Music. You're probably familiar with that.

You mentioned John Wayne. Have you seen The Quiet Man?

I'm also a fan of Gregory Peck. For a western have you seen The Big Country? Another favorite of mine is Twelve O'Clock High...but that may be more of a guy flick. He's great in '56's Moby Dick. There's also an interesting little movie that's not so well known from 1953, The Million Pound Note which you might like.

Another of my all time favorite movies is the 1936 My Man Godfrey with William Powell (but avoid the 1957 version). Along that line I also LOVE The Thin Man. It also stars William Powell along with Myrna Loy. Most of the sequel Thin Man movies are good (though the last is a bit weak I think).
