Brilliant for what it is, it hurts to think what it could have been had the Nazis not butchered the author.
Cane by Jean Toomer and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. I liked Perfume more than I expected to, it has some humor to offset the dark bits.

Krleza has another 1001 list book with a higher avg rating on goodreads, On the Edge of Reason, which I have on my to-read list. He isn't read much by English- language readers but a few of my GR friends have read it- Amanda may have read it in French possibly.
