Death in Rome by Wolfgang Koeppen. Rather Thomas Mann-ish, a very uncomfortable post-war story, but so well-written.
I finished The Purloined Letter/Murders in Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe and Death Sentence by Maurice Blanchot
I just finished The Garden Party and Other Stories by Katherine Mansfield. It was okay, but I'm not a huge fan of short stories. The three best stories in this volume are: "At the Bay," "The Garden Party," and "Ma Parker."
Jonpaul wrote: "At the Mountains of Madness. Classic stuff. Really inventive."How did you like this? I currently have this one on hold at the library and should be able to pick it up soon.
Kai wrote: "The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. I really loved it."Glad you liked it, I read The Woman in White and I couldn't put it down. so I'm looking forward to getting to the moonstone xx

I agree with both of you - loved both books! Read Moonstone as a result of loving Woman in White.

Have you read any other Wilkie Collins books?
Finished Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis. Loved it! One of the best books I have ever read. Awesome, awesome, awesome!
Colleen wrote: "The world according to Garp. Funny and sweet."I have this book packed somewhere from my move. I haven't read it yet, but want to. Unfortunately, the place we moved isn't big enough to unpack all 1500 of my books so I'm currently slowly being driven insane by the need to access my books and the inability to do so...
Finished The Left-Handed Woman by Handke. A married woman decides to separate from her husband and then has to overcome her loneliness, all in only a hundred pages. One of those stories that could have been interesting but just made me shrug.
Finished The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain. The story was really good, so many twists and turns in such a short book. But the language was awful.
Finished Death in Venice by Thomas MannSurprised me a bit, great writing, strange plot but good read.

Finished The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark. One of those cautionary tales that stick with you. A good read.
Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. The only other Woolf I've read is A Room of One's Own and I really like her insightful and intelligent style.
Daniel Deronda by George Eliot. It was the second George Eliot book I've read, after Middlemarch. It was good, but not as great as Middlemarch. There were a couple of coincidences which were a bit much in my opinion. I would rate it 3.5 or 4 stars.
I finished The Turn of the screw yesterday. I liked that it was short, a classic, quality, really eerie and scary (scariest book that I've ever read). I didn't really like the ending because I don't understand what happened! So I need to look it up
RebeccaSkillful writing, but I was frustrated by often feeling "I know what's going to happen - why can't the characters see it?!"
Aubrey wrote: "Ursula wrote: "Finished The Remains of the Day. Much to think about."Love that book."
Me too!
The Beautiful Room is Empty. Although a smaller book, it packs a punch and the language deserves to be read slowly and thoughtfully. A really wonderful little gem on this long list.
Robyn wrote: "I just finished Madame Bovary. I was a little bored sometimes, but liked it overall. I'm glad I finally read it. And this is my first post here. So, hi."
Hi, Robyn! Welcome!
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich - so very good and a quick read. Now I'm reading a book about Russian history at the time and understanding a bit more of the setting and author.

I remember him being in the news as an exile when I was in high school.
Ellinor wrote: "Finished The Breast. Very strange stuff!"Are you telling me that this is on the 1001 Books list?! I suppose I might put it on "1001 Books By Philip Roth You Must Read Before You Die", but to be honest I'm not sure.

Yes, it's on the list but was removed in the first revision. I wonder why...
