Yes they are both quite big books...my favorite kind, when they are good but a lot to get through in a challenge!
Great cover too...Is there a group for books with great covers?? I would add that one along with Infamy by Lenny Bartulin

Jan (janmerry) | 68 comments Finished a reread of Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. Left me wondering why this is such a moving book. Full of all those things I dislike, such as teenage angst and self absorption, I ought to hate it. I guess it's down to the skill of the writer and the big picture he paints. No wonder it's a classic.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Thanks everyone, Some great books listed here and really good reviews. I've picked up more books for my TBR.

But I still wish more people in AR used this thread and posted reviews that we could all benefit from knowing about:(

Gave up on this and took it back to the library. I have read and really enjoyed others but this author but this one left me cold. Found it confusing and annoying. Maybe it's me. Anyway, I gave up.

Unfortunately, the times I most think of posting here are when I'm actually reading something (either because I've just read a really great part I'd like to tell people about or I'm a bit bored with it). But because I'm reading, I'm not at the computer and only my phone is nearby, and since you can't link from the app, I figure I'll wait until I'm on the computer again. And then I forget!! I'll try to make more of an effort :-)

And, while I'm here, at the moment I'm reading Beneath the Darkening Sky by Majok Tulba. It is fiction, but feels like non-fiction - it's slow going partly because it's about a difficult issue (children from villages being forced to accompany rebel soldiers to eventually become child soldiers themselves) and partly because it's not something I want to read at night in case I end up dreaming about it!

I'm also reading The Jade Widow by Deborah O'Brien which is historical fiction for the Nov HF challenge - however I didn't realise until I started reading it that it's the sequel to Mr Chen's Emporium which I haven't read - grrr! Wish I'd realised that first! Nevertheless, it's interesting, but now I'll have to go back after and read the first one…

I'm also listening to Contest by Matthew Reilly - sci-fi/fantasy (not my normal genre - it was a backup for the Spring challenge and I decided to read it even though I read another) and it's interesting - there's a deadly competition going on in the New York State Library with 7 competitors from different planets (all the competitors apart from Earth's representative know about the competition and the other worlds - we are the only unenlightened ones!). The competition occurs once every so often (1000 years? 2000?), it's a fight to the death and there can only be one winner - the other 6 contestants need to be slain to win. And just to make it a bit more exciting, there's a monster also let loose in the building which lies dormant until any one of the contestants can decide to "activate" it, if they think it will help their chances! It's interesting enough to keep me listening!

Reviewing a book doesn’t come as easily or naturally for me. I need quiet time and time which is something I don’t have with a young child.

There are several other reasons why people don’t post or review books and I don’t think you need a review to know if someone likes it or it’s a good book….that’s just my opinion.

I agree Mish, we don't want people to feel pressured to write a review; therefore they won't comment about their books at all.

How are you finding the book? I read it this year too :)

message 6691: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I rea The Shifting Fog too, except my copy was called The House at Riverton. I'd never read Kate Morton before this year, but I enjoy her style.

And yes, it's true that feeling pressured to write about books we're reading can take the pleasure out of it - especially for those who are already short of time (and would rather be using the time they do have to read more anyway!), but I do mostly have the time, and if I don't post stuff, it is mainly a combination of laziness and forgetfulness, so I'll try a little harder!!

@Kathryn, I do know what you mean. Sometimes, after finishing a book, a review screams out to written. But at other times, a review is just not in me for whatever reason.

@Mish, @Brenda. I, too, would hate to feel pressured to review every single book I read. I do acknowledge that some readers may feel comfortable doing reviews while others are content simply to read a book.

Aha! That's nicely worded Bette:)

I am currently reading Murder in Mississippi and I slotted in Reckless Rebellion which I've finished and gave 5s with my review to follow.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Reading Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding - about halfway through, it's pretty great so far. Firefly/Serenity but with airships, which rustles my jimmies in the best possible way.

Sally Howes | 223 comments I'm (almost finished) reading The Signature of All Things, which has turned out to have more grunt and substance than I expected, and For Whom the Bell Tolls, which may become my favourite Hemingway book so far, if the ending is good.

I've just started listening to The Pillars of the Earth on audiobook. Very enjoyable so far - not brilliant, but certainly enjoyable.
