I loved that book Marianne. One of my favorites that I've read this year.

@Sharon It helps that I've abandoned everything else too - just for this month:)

@Elaine Only 4hrs sleep started when I worked and now is just 'normal' for me, I guess. I hadn't thought of Brenda but reading this much does feel quite indulgent:)

@Kathryn Maybe not 31; my niece is coming to stay today unexpectedly so I guess I wont be reading quite as much for next few days. And I was going so well:)

message 6506: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I finished Little Children by Tom Perrotta. 3.5★

And started Canada by Richard Ford

message 6507: by Michele (new)

Michele I finished Stasiland: Stories from Behind the Berlin Wall by Anna Funder which was excellent and quite an eye opener Michael.

I also quickly read Every Secret Thing by Laura Lippman which was really really bad! Having just read The Wicked Girls which was excellent, I had high hopes for Every Secret Thing, but what a let down, I basically skimmed most of the book until the end, which I picked even without reading it properly.

message 6511: by Kay (new)

Kay | 9 comments I just abandoned *Flight Behaviour: A novel* by Barbara Kingsolver! I couldn't stand the seemingly imbecilic back-country characters and their syrupy and contradictory religion. As much as I read was beautifully written and I could picture the people and the setting, but I couldn't let those characters inhabit my head for the length of another page! Did anyone finish it and can tell me what you thought about it?

Kay | 9 comments Geoff wrote: "Finished Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. This has to be the best book I've ever read. Can I give it 7 out of 5 stars??"
Yep- give it 7! When I first read it I felt that the book said everything I needed to know about close human relationships both in its own era and in mine. Now I know it was a mere snippet of what goes on among humans week after week, century after century. The extremes and (lack of) solutions to human dilemmas never cease to amaze me. How striking that all of this could be written by a single woman with very little social nous back in such a restrictive time for women in English society!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I'm still reading Canada by Richard Ford.

Four days on the same book is incredibly slow-going for me:(

My niece and my 16th mnth old grand-niece have come to stay so my Booktober has come to a halt. But wonderful to have them here:)

(The term 'grand-niece' makes me feel so damn old but I am a young 48 yr old grand aunt)

Are you enjoying Canada though. I've got that book on my TBR

message 6516: by Tash (new)

Tash Dahling (misstash) | 19 comments Just finished The String Diaries. I really wasn't expecting much, but as debut novels go, this was fantastic. With chapters devoted to different points in time, and just the right amount Hungarian folk this book was enough to have me finishing it in one.
The ending, unfortunately was a bit of a let down. Just too cliched. It was a great ride though.

Bette, if it makes you feel any better, I am getting ready to be a grand-aunt for the second time and I am only 37 years old:-)

message 6522: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pjaye) I just finished the new Bridget Jones book Mad About the Boy and really disliked it. Gave it one star. I was in the mood for something light and fun...and this wasn't it. Bridget is now 51yo and completely shallow and selfish and hasn't learnt a thing on dealing with life since we last met her.
I'm a few years younger than Bridget, but still don't think long stories about head lice or frequent mentions of farting are funny.

Just curious did it have lots of swearing in it like the slap? I've been reluctant to pick it up in case as it was just way over the top for my liking in Slap which was a DNF for me

My husband and I actually knew him at uni and so have followed his career and Stan has read all his books. He's still in touch with him. I must admit I've only read his firstLoaded, The Slap and this one, which is by far my favourite. I couldn't really handle the others they were too full on and quite dark really. He is a really nice guy too and very humble. I have been in contact with him to ask him if he would come into Dymocks to sign some copies of his book and he said yes so I'm quite thrilled about that!!!

Hi Liza, wow you live in a country that is at the top of my list of places I really want to visit. I think the TV series was quite popular and well received here. It actually was done really well and I know quite a few people who watched it and enjoyed it without having read the book. There were some really good Australan actors in it which I think made it quite successful too. It really was quite true to the book and I agree with you quite enjoyable.

message 6536: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 2001 comments Dale wrote: "This Aussie didn't watch it or read the book."

Yes Dale he definitely isn't for everyone but I think his latest book...although still quite confronting with certain images and language in parts...may appeal to a wider audience. I also think this one is less pretentious or should I say more real than The Slap. And the characters definitely more likable!!!

Mmn yes, Barracuda does sound interesting... another one for the TBR pile! I agree, most of the characters in The Slap were SO unlikeable. Maybe that's what made it interesting??
