I started this once and stopped when I thought it might go somewhere I didn't want to go - but hey! I've since read 'Lolita' and 'Cruddy' so I'm less of a wuss. Sydney is just two chapters in so I'll keep you posted. For now, it's authentic in time and place which is always a good start.

Michele I am about to start Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. I am looking forward to this one as it sounds similar to my all time favourite book Replay by Ken Grimwood.

Fascinating book. Heart-wrenching though. Make sure you read all three books in the compendium as the earlier books are a difficult read but the last gives hope.

I finished the first book last night and made a damn good dint in the second book while I was at it. I am at times struggling with the emotional side of the book but it is a very compelling story. I am very interested to see how well Dave comes out the other side. Especially after his childhood experiences.

That is a great series. I enjoyed his books as much as you can looking at the subject. What a horrible life, I hope you like to read.

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments I have just finsished 2 books that I really enjoyed - A Rose for the Anzac Boys by Jackie French (I read it for the Autumn challenge) and it was a great story, just right for reading leading up to Anzac day. I also loved reading The Reading Group by Elizabeth Noble. At the moment I am listing to A Secret In The Family by Lyn Andrews and The Things We Do for Love by Kristen Hannah and I am reading The Pleasure of Your Kiss by Teresa Medeiros

Late last night I finished the final book in the series. It was a very hard read emotionally. I did find it very compelling in the fact that as awful as his experiences were I still wanted to continue reading to see how he came out the other side. Dave is truly an inspiration and strong person. I could never imagine being treated the way he was or treating any one of my children the way his Mother treated him. Obviously "The Mother" had serious psychological issues.

message 5120: by Michele (new)

Michele I just finished Life After Life by Kate Atkinson and what a huge disappointment! I was really looking forward to reading this novel as it has received so many great reviews and I love the idea of the book, but it was so dull. I am very surprised at the number of good reviews it has received.

message 5121: by Kyla (new)

Kyla Corrigan | 94 comments Yesterday I finished Holes by Louis Sachar. For me it was an easy read and I can understand why my daughter enjoys it so much.

Last night I started reading Making Friends with Hitler: Lord Londonderry, the Nazis & the Road to War by Ian Kershaw. This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for some years unread. I'm hoping it will be as interesting as the blurb makes it sound.

Kim BookGirl | 109 comments Finished Dodger last night. Will start One Pair of Hands by Monica Dickens tonight. Monica is a great granddaughter of Charles Dickens and this book is about the time she spent 'downstairs' after finishing finishing school because she thought they had more fun.

Couldn't find a link for the book or author.

Was Dodger good? I have it lined up to read for a challenge in May.
One Pair Of Hands is linked on Goodreads. I used to read Monica Dickens years ago!

Thanks Phrynne. Yes I did enjoy Dodger. I have not read a lot Pratchett and I think it might be a bit different to his other books as a friend who is a Pratchett devotee did not like it as much as his other work.

Have some Christopher Isherwood from the library. Not read him before. But I also have an anthology of essays edited by David Suzuki for book group.

I am certainly enjoying it so far but I always like Terry Pratchett. He has a very clever turn of phrase and makes me laugh out loud!

message 5137: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I'm reading The Comfort of Figs by Simon Cleary and it's a great description of Brisbane - as I read it, I can picture where the author is talking about (although a lot of the time, I'm reading and thinking that I don't really remember the details of what he is describing - I'm not as observant as him, obviously!).

When I first started it, I thought it was great, however I started a faster-paced novel shortly afterward and I think this one suffered by comparison - I felt like it was VERY slow and lumbering for the first part, but it picked up a little in the second part and now I'm in the third and final part and am racing toward the end! I think it will be a 3 star book but I think it would appeal more to Brisbaneites because of the local flavour. Or bridge or fig tree devotees, as it deals with the building of the Story Bridge, and one of the main characters has a passion for fig trees so they feature prominently.

Lit Bug (Foram) | 402 comments The Vintage Book Of Historical Feminism by Miriam Schneir - am on page 91 and so far it has been immensely interesting. Rather than a conventional chronological history of feminist movements, this book provides excerpts from important and unacknowledged authors' writings and speeches that proved critical for the mainstream feminist movements, starting from the 19th century to today, in a chronological fashion.
