Yes - I loved that one too. Have you tried The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared. I just finished that and it is in very much the same vein.

Which blew me away. I loved this book. Despite the terrible reviews. It is a little piece of brilliance, even though reading the sex scenes is remarkably unpleasant.
The Cellist of Sarajevo looks great Michelle, I popped that on my TBR list

I haven't read that one yet Phrynne, but it's one I have considered. I'll check the library out after what you said...thanks.

Did The Slap get bad reviews? Most people I know loved it.

I took ages to get round to reading it because the title was a bit too silly. But the book is really good. As Michael says the things the main character gets up to are just too funny.

I am about to start that one too. I have often wondered what his writing is like. Some people absolutely rave about him! I would like to hear what you think!

Yes, whenever I'm looking for sci-fi books, his name invariably pops up - but seems, that by mistake I picked one which also has fantasy in it - I wanted to read something of his pure sci-fi but now got to read this before I buy any new one.

Okay - I will start it tonight. Sounds like you read pretty fast! I'll do my best.

Brenda, mind telling me some of your highly recommended reads? I'd love to get some new recos, not any particular genre. Thanks :)
If you go to my profile Lit Bug, and check out my list of books I've read, you'll see the 5 star ones, and they would be definite recommendations. Here's the link...there are over 1000 books there, and a HUGE amount of them I would recommend, so I'll let you browse through them when you have time;) http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/...

first go to your profile and click Compare books and see if we trust your opinion :P

Glad you liked it Jos. Yes I thought The Slap was brilliant but I believe a lot of people couldn’t finish it

True. And I was tempted throw the book against the wall several times, not so much by the sex scene and the language but by the adults’ pov…..They had me in a rage. But like Jos said it was a brilliant piece of writing and I’m so glad I stuck with it.

Thanks - I'll look right away!

I finished The City and the City last night and I really enjoyed it. It is both my favourite genres - crime and fantasy - rolled into one. I loved the idea of the two cities occupying the same space and people 'not seeing' the people in the other city.Excellent book and very glad I read it.

Thanks James, yes I'm afraid my TBR suffers daily;)

More than anything else, I liked for a change how without noticing I was more interested in Orciny's existence or non-existence rather than who killed Mahalia. And the cities' metaphors about how we unsee and unhear everything we wish to block out - even if it is right in front of our eyes, we lead our lives pretending it isn't.

The main character has just lost her husband (subject too close to home for me) but my girlfriend said this was really well written. So I started it last night - what a delight!
This book has made me laugh out loud so many times! Example - main character thinks to herself "The Dark Ages are alive and thriving like a secret herpes infection among us" - I laughed so loud at that, my poor cat shot out the room and smacked into the door jamb on her way!
I'm on Page 167 of some 414 and really enjoying this read.

it rains (so I can't garden)
the vacuum blows up (so I can't clean)
my sewing machine won't start (so I can't sew)
I sprain my ankle(so I can't walk anywhere)
AND then...
I can flop on the couch (without guilt) and keep reading this delightful book.

I finished
Blood Harvest by S.J. Bolton Exceptional!
