Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments Nearly finished my book for this week. I was on the train on the way home from work and my kindle died a few pages from the end... incredibly frustrating!

I'm always amazed by bilingual people. Languages have never really been my thing. All I can remember from high school Italian is how to order pizza - without the mushrooms.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Funny story about my son - we were in Barnes and Noble together and I asked him what book he was looking at. He said it was a book of latin poetry. And I'm like - is it translated into English (silly me!) and he said, in a very superior tone of voice - "no, mom. Why would I want to read someone else's translation." I was obviously so clueless!

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Yeah, coming from him it was pretty funny. He's this muscular, good looking guy who played soccer in college and he's walking around with his latin poetry. But I guess this is the same boy who played Pretty Pretty Princess with his sisters!!

How is everyone coming on their books this week? I hope everyone is getting some reading time!
And Katie, have you picked your Free Space read yet? I should be starting mine later today.

Christina (AKA Babbling) (babblingbookreviews) | 1242 comments Judithe - I have no idea were that is in the book. I hope to read some at lunch. I'm about to start chap 17. :-)

Judithe | 6566 comments Happy reading, Christina! Kindle has no page numbers...but it's still ahead of you. And...Found it, chapter 34 & 35, but really, really don't skip ahead!

Five stars, and an extra few, too. Review to follow, but maybe not until the weekend...busy, busy day, not made any easier by getting totally sucked into HoO!

But, very happy.

Monica (nutz4reading) | 382 comments Wow you guys doing great. I am going to post this and then get busy reading. I am working on an ER book for review and my book club book right now. Once I finish one of them I will start one of my books.

I need more time in the day just to get everything done that I want to.

How are we doing on our reading? I'd love to be able to submit our books the shelf soon.
Another thing, I'd like to go ahead and "friend" everyone to make things easier.

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Hi Leslie, I generally wont' be finished with my book until Saturday -- unless it is that last week and I will turn it around quickly. Sorry.

My book definitley picked up, which is great.

message 114: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Regina, This weekend is soon enough! No worries on that. And I'm really glad your book picked up. Life is too short and there are too many good books out there.

Hope you got to finish your book! I hate it when I'm away from home and my nook dies.
And completely agree with you about languages. I have no idea where my son gets it from!!

It has been a rainy day but I had to go out with my dog to the vet. It was not fun. It took me longer to drive and get home then it did at the appointment.

message 120: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I was out in traffic today. Yuck!! I hope your dog is okay, Monica! And enjoy your book tonight.

I'll be looking for your reviews, Regina!

Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh
Shelf: Free Space
Date finished: 6/5/13
Rating: ★★★★★
Thoughts:
"Already know it's gonna be 5 stars..."

Put that in when I was prepping for the review, and yep, it was. I know many people are still waiting, and avoiding reviews so they can enjoy the full unveil in the book. So, NO spoilers. Just some of my thoughts.

This one took place mainly in the minds of the hero and heroine. There were cameos from some other favorite characters, but they played a very minor role. There was a lot of action on the worldwide scale, leading to a finish in this story arc, but the series will continue (had to check that immediately, even though I'd already put in reminders for myself to pre-order the next two scheduled books).

Psy-changelings is a series I love, and love to re-read (some stories more than others). This was a great addition to it, and I loved the intensity of it. I wasn't sure I'd like one of them, but now have a very different view.

Aghhh...saying anymore would lead to spoilers and really don't want to go there (just had a cry at inadvertently finding a spoiler for another book I'm still waiting for...boohoo...so...)

So, that's all, folks!

message 122: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Less than 24 hours til the next shelf.... *grin* Can't wait!

I had book-grief after putting HoO down...hated to say goodbye, and couldn't really decide on what to read next. So, doing some short stories, and looking forward to novel-motivation with the next shelf...

message 126: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I completely understand the concept of "book grief", Judithe!! Great review. I still remember how I felt when I finished reading Tangle of Need (Psy-Changeling, #11) by Nalini Singh back in December. I'm not sure I'll be able to last not reading this one! I'm trying to be good, but it's hard!! Having just finished the series, I haven't re-read any of them - but maybe I'll have to!!

Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep
Shelf: Assassin
Date finished: 6 June 2013
Rating: ★★★★
Review:
From the very first page I found myself enjoying Gin and her antics. For an assassin she's very caring and whilst I don't exactly approve of her occupation - I like her personal code of ethics.

The supporting characters are fun and/or interesting and I loved Gin's interactions with them. And the plot was exciting right to the last.

This is definitely a series I'm going to continue reading.

Judithe | 6566 comments Leslie, can I make a recommendation/request? Could you add links to the lists for each shelf to your first post on our thread? It'll make it easier for everyone to find them later...

(BTW, does that make sense language wise? Wondering if it sounds nonsensical like "put that thingy over with these thingys"...brain scramble!)

message 130: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments That makes total sense, Judithe. I'm sorry I didn't think of it sooner. Thanks for reminding me.

Yes, another hooked on Gin!! I love all the characters in her life. I'm very attached to them now. And I want to go to the Pork Pit and eat barbecue!

Book:Blood Cross by Faith Hunter
Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter
Review:

I listened to the audio version of this book and the narration was done well. After enjoying the first book - I gave it 3 stars -- I expected the same out of this book. However, the first 50% was barely 2 stars. This book is a rare book in that the world building is strong, the characters are well written and do not annoy me, but the beginning of the story was just boring. It took too long to establish a story line. Too long. I wondered for 1/2 of a book if there would be a storyline. Well it appeared at around 50% -- and it was good. The last 1/2 of this book saved the book for me. It picked up in pace and interest. I plan to continue to the next in the series as I have the audio and the world/characters are decent.

Book: Sins & Needles by Karina Halle
Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle
Review
Sins & Needles is not for everyone. How is that a start for a book review? Yet it was a book for me, I loved it. From the beginning, Sins & Needles had me …. had me wanting more from the characters, and for the characters. To take a quote from the book, “It’s rough and sweet at the same time.” The story starts with two unlikeable characters. Characters that have done wrong and had wrong done to them. Characters that are perhaps not reformed but they do want out and they do want to be happy. How is that a premise for a book? Karina Halle is somehow able to take two unlikeable characters and tell their story in a very deep way. I didn’t walk away thinking – hey, I’d love to be friends with Ellie (the main character). I actually hope to never meet anyone like Ellie. But I do understand her and feel her pain. Ms. Halle took me down the road of Ellie’s past, her parents, and her recent failed love affair and while I don’t really sympathize with Ellie, I understand her and want more of her story. I love books and authors who take me places I had no clue I even wanted to go. And that is where Sins & Needles took me.

“Never commit a crime when you’re the only person to blame.”

Sins & Needles is really a story about two characters circling around each other, who need each other and want each other. It is sexy and has a lot of passion behind it.

“He laid me on the ground, the hard grass tickling the sides of my ears, and that was the last time he was gentle.”

The tension and storyline are kicked up a notch around halfway through the book and that is where it really takes off. A story like Sins & Needle wouldn’t be worth reading or as half as rewarding without consequences. Sins & Needles has just the right balance of presenting characters who seriously need to grow up, change, evolve and just letting their story unfold – no matter what happens to them.

Karina Halle has a pre-quel to Sins & Needles: On Every Street. On Every Street is essential to understanding why Ellie does what she does when she flees Javier, but I recommend reading Sins & Needles first and then On Every Street. Readers who enjoy stories that center around characters and has some romance will like Sins & Needles but you gotta be open to reading about significantly flawed characters who don’t really want to improve.

Wicked Road to Hell (League of Guardians, #1) by Juliana Stone
6/8/13 ***1/2 stars
Review:
This is the first book in a spinoff series. It is a little difficult to follow at the beginning and it did help that I had read the first one in the other series. This one is set in New Orleans and follows Declan who is a sorceror working for a group called the Seraphim who control Otherworlders. He is sent to find a boy who is being guarded by Ana, a vampire he has obviously known previously. Things get a little complicated as everyone tries to figure out who is on the side of whom and what they should do about the boy, who has the special mark of seven on him. Eventually, Declan and Ana end up in Hell fighting together to save more children. The book picks up at this point, but Declan and Ana are never easy to cheer for. They are both rather grumpy and argumentative and difficult to like. I ended up liking the book and will probably read more at some point.
