Judithe | 6566 comments Hey Regina! GR notifications are always quirky (or at least, frequently!) Happy book hunting!

message 52: by Monica (last edited Jun 01, 2013 04:38PM) (new)

Monica (nutz4reading) | 382 comments Yeah I found a book for the first shelf!! Okay so that is one for the Free Space and for Assassins. Now to go and read so that I can get a book completed or make a dent in one of them.

My book for the free space is All Together Dead

and for Week 1 shelf The Bourne Identity

Happy Reading All!!

message 53: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Wow, completely missed shelf announcement as well. So glad you are keeping watch over things, Judithe!! I know exactly what I will be reading!!! Yay!! Love this shelf.
I'll be reading By a Thread (Elemental Assassin, #6) by Jennifer Estep

And Monica, I read that book a long time ago in my early 20's and loved it!! I just picked up a hard back copy of it at a garage sale recently. Enjoy!!

message 54: by Monica (new)

Monica (nutz4reading) | 382 comments Leslie I have had it on my TBR shelf for awhile. Now this gives me the push to actually read it.

message 55: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments LOL, Leslie, I'll ALWAYS know (at least for this round) when the shelf announcement happens... Been running around and getting stuff done, now gotta find my book.

But, posted on the discussion thread, and will ask my teamies here, please check our card on the stat spreadsheet (link below)...brain and fingers weren't always moving at the same speed! If you spot an error (space name, spelling, etc), give me a shout. Thanks!

message 56: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I know, Judithe!! That makes me so happy. And I've been meaning to check the card and post. Sorry!!

And if anyone needs a good Assassin series to read I suggest Elemental Assassins!!

@ Monica - I remember it as being a very dense book - not the characters, but the writing. LOL

message 57: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments I've narrowed down my Assassin book, but still have a list of about four or five. I'll post again after I start one of them (today)!

message 58: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments The card on the Stat sheet looks right to me - everything in it's right place :)

And I think I'll take you up on that Leslie.
I'll read Spider's Bite for my assassins book.

I've had a copy on my kindle for a while now just waiting to get around to reading it.

Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep

message 59: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am trying to decide between:

The Drawing of the Three (The Dark Tower, #2) by Stephen King Cut & Run (Cut & Run #1) by Madeleine Urban Living Nightmare (Sentinel Wars, #4) by Shannon K. Butcher I Hunt Killers (Jasper Dent, #1) by Barry Lyga Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter

message 60: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Thanks, Kate!! And I'll just warn you that the first one is just getting things started and it's not until you read #2 that you get hooked. I'm now completely obsessed with Gin Blanco!!

message 61: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Me too!!! LOL.

message 62: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 478 comments Sounds good :D Not sure if I need another series to become obsessed over but - who am I kidding? I'm always up for another great series to read!

Thanks guys :)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments HI Sandra!!

message 64: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments *Waves hi* to Leslie ;)

message 65: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments Kate, beware of Leslie. She made me get addicted to that series too. :D

message 66: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Thanks, Kate! And ditto on Elemental Assassins...Book 8 is on my short list of WHICH BOOK FOR THIS SHELF?? Sigh. It's very good. Now I'd better do some work (the house type...) so I can READ all night...

message 67: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments I went with Deadly Sting Deadly Sting (Elemental Assassin, #8) by Jennifer Estep for Shelf 1: assassins. Loving it!

message 68: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am going to go with Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter for this week's shelf call.

message 69: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am going to read Cut & Run (Cut & Run #1) by Madeleine Urban for my free space

message 70: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Good morning Team!! I love it when friends visit!! HI Vi!! And yes, I am such a cheerleader for Gin!

We certainly are reading some good books for this one.

@Regina - I just discovered that my library has the Jane Yellowrock series as ebooks to check out. I plan on starting that series. It looks really interesting.
And I've heard about Cut&Run. Interested to hear what you think.

I have one book I am finishing up today before I can get started on my book. So excited!

message 71: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am listening to the audio of the Jane Yellowrock and it is well done. It isn't the type of UF that blows me away, but it is really enjoyable. I heard the first Cut & Run is slow, but I am looking forward to getting in to the series.

message 72: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I'm always interested in what people think who listen to audiobooks. I have never been able to get into it, but I know several people here on GR who love it. And my mom loves audiobooks.

message 73: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Audiobooks differ so much -- it may have been the story or the narrator. :) But I am biased!

message 74: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments I also haven't gotten into audiobooks...yet! I've heard a good one, but it was a little slow (I tend to read faster), and don't have the blocks of time to listen...still hoping to find the one that will change my mind!

message 75: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Which one did you listen to? I do read faster, definitely.

I listen when I am exercising, cleaning, folding clothes, emptying the dishwasher, driving a car, and doing admin work at work. When I am sick and too sick to read I listen and occasionally when I have trouble sleeping but want to go to sleep, I listen and close my eyes and then I will fall asleep. ;) I find it is a way to keep reading.

message 76: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments I listened to Strange Brew and Leviathon...whoohoo! My count is two, not one! I'd forgotten that. I think all those activities would be better with a book, too, but it still hasn't clicked for me. Boohoo.

Strange Brew was quite good (short story collection) so I think it may be that I'm more of a visual person...see the words and remember, but when just listening, I'm not fully focused.

message 77: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Hmm, I haven't listened to those. But yay for it being two! LOL. :)

I will think of my best recs for audio -- romance, historical, UF, PNR, thriller, and throw them out there.

In my opinion, fantasy and sci fi are hard to listen to as they tend to be more detailed.

message 78: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Looking forward to your recs!!

message 79: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Judithe, that's my problem as well. I've discovered that all my learning challenges in school were actually Listening problems. I don't form a mental picture when someone tells me something. I have to see it or do it in order for the mental picture to form. But even just reading some things won't work.
But I keep thinking I will try audio books again and one will click with me.

message 80: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments So get that...hated the classes where teachers would just stand there and talk. Read the material, and I was fine. Listening...copious notes and fine, but just listening...well, no matter how close I thought I was paying attention, it was soon gone...

It sounds like you and I have our mission cut out for us! LOL! Fingers crossed on finding one to help "reset" that framework.

Judithe | 6566 comments Deadly Sting (Elemental Assassin, #8) by Jennifer Estep
Deadly Sting by Jennifer Estep

Shelf 1: Assassins
Date finished: 6/03/13
Rating: ★★★★☆
Thoughts:

The end of Widow's Web threw me...and I was hoping that almost last page development would be resolved in the next...well, not yet, but looking positive.

Knowing others are starting this series, I'm reluctant to say too much...so many exciting things ahead for you! So, I'll just say, the regulars are there, and shining. Gin is her usual kick-ass self, and when somebody messes with her "family", well, she messes them up. Lots of action, fun twists, and great set-up for the series' continuation. Hooray! Very happy to know I have two more, at least, to look forward to (pre-ordered as well)!

message 82: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I can't wait to get to this book. I already have it on my nook! I'm almost finished with my book and will get to start reading about Gin soon.

message 83: by Monica (new)

Monica (nutz4reading) | 382 comments Tonight after work I am going to exercise and avoid the computer to get some reading done. I am so far behind that I haven't started my books for this week or the free space.

message 84: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I started my book while walking the treadmill. Yay!!

message 85: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Okay, I need to whine but I'll do it with a spoiler. Those who are just starting this series, DON'T READ!!
(view spoiler)

message 86: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Don't worry Leslie and keep reading ;)

message 87: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments thanks, Sandra! I have been reading and I feel better already. I knew my unhappiness with Gin could only be temporary.

message 88: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments So I dnfed Cut & Run. I am going to see if Sins & Needles would count as a Free Space. ;) Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle

I am just meh on this week's shelf book Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter == I am 50% in and I still am not sure what the storyline is.

ROFL

Exactly right!

message 90: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am going to be reading Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle -- I added it because I think it is the type of book that should be on our shelf. I hope that is okay.

message 91: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Absolutely agree with Sandra's assessment on that!

No worries Regina ;)

message 93: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Thanks! I guilt after I did it! Lol.

message 94: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Have started my Free Space read (which I forgot to state is on the June New releases page, and surely on the bookshelf by now!). Would be in absolute bliss if I didn't still have dinner dishes in the sink and a translation proofing to finish up by 10 a.m. tomorrow. AGH! Needing a time out from RL, of else demand books to be released just before my day off....

message 95: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Sorry your book for this week is only meh, Regina! I've heard good things about the series.

And thanks for all the support over my Gin Blanco moment. I don't usually get quite so worked up. But it was a very emotional book!

And Judithe, I have put in a request to the powers that be in book world that no one speak about reading that particular book!! LOL I am so jealous!!
And dinner dishes have never ever ever stopped me from doing anything including staring into space. And what do you translate? Just curious.

message 96: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Week 1: Assassins
By a Thread (Elemental Assassin, #6) by Jennifer Estep
6/3/13 ****1/2 stars
Review:
This installment of the series was such an emotional rollercoaster ride. Gin tries to take a vacation and ends up battling a vampire with elemental powers. All the usual people are with her and she resolves some longstanding issues. I was a mess by the end!

message 97: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Leslie, the hardest thing will be to write a review...I have studiously AVOIDED any discussion, hints, etc cause I don't want it to be spoiled for me (and want to do the same for others...). Comments so far, it's fantastically gooooooooooooooood! And that will probably be my review. Eep! So glad I didn't read the teaser chapters until I had them attached to the whole book.

I tend to proofread translations, because I'm too nitpicky and indecisive when I'm the lead on a translation project. The projects run the gamut, newspaper articles, research abstracts in a variety of fields, letters, legal forms, and today's, and announcement article related to astronomical research results (which is one of my faves!). I do Japanese to English...and it's my hobby/other job. Main job is teacher of English (language, not literature). Fun and intellectually stimulating...usually!

message 98: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Yes, writing the review will be hard, but I'm okay with spoilers, Judithe. I just want to be reading it right now and it upsets me that I'm not. But I made the decision and I'm trying to stick by it!! But I like the review - it's fantastically good!

And I was curious because my son just graduated from college and majored in Greek and Roman Studies with a concentration in Latin. He worked for a professor in school translating latin documents and his senior thesis was a translation of the Latin Mass. He loves to translate. It's a part time job for him now as well.

message 99: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Ye good ole Latin mass. Brings back bad memories of stifling heat, sitting in the pews and squirming around cause I had no clue what was being said (I was about 5!) LOL

message 100: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)
