I'm Karen. I live in the UK. I work as an Archaeologist. My main areas of historical interest are the Ancient Near East,Ancient Egypt,Rome, the Crusades,Sixteen century Europe, the fall of the Romanovs and the end of the Habsburg Empire.
At the moment I'm reading "the chemical choir"-a history of alchemy and David Maland's C16th Europe.
Welcome to all our new members, namely Empress, Rita, Jill, Jazmin, and Scott. I hope you might feel well here discussing and reading with us. If you have any questions, just ask for the moderator's help.
I am J.D. Brayton. My interest in history is wide ranging. My particular focus is on the American Revolution, the Civil War, British military history(esp. involving 18-19th century India); and honestly - nearly anything in between. I have just completed Unger's biography 'Lafayette'. Simply incredible!
Welcome Karen to The History Book Club. I imagine your job is fascinating. Literally uncovering history has to be exciting and rewarding. I hope that we can help you uncover some history here at The History Book Club. We have a variety of folders which may interest you. Based upon your post - here is one that you may want to look at:
Ancient Near East
There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.
When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Hi, I'm Nicci, from the very historic county of Kent, England, though born and raised in London. I have a degree in history; love reading biography and social history; and, more recently, historical novels. Today, I finished Wolf Hall. I've had it on my shelf for years and only picked it up after seeing the recent tv series. What took me so long?!
John wrote: "Nicci, also check out the Tudor History Lovers Group. Think you'll like it."Hi John, thanks for the suggestion. In fact, I joined that group earlier, as well as this one!
Hi, my name is Alvaro, I'm from Cuba and I love reading. My interest in history is very very broad, from ancient history to contemporary topics, from the history of civilizations to the history of the Earth. I'm just a history lover trying to grasp past times, I always want to know how it was and why. Recently I've been intrigued by the daily life in the WWII in Europe particularly in Germany, and about the WWI in general. Any suggestions?
Last book read:
by Jared Diamond.Currently reading:
by Bill BrysonProbably next:
by Charles C. MannI hope to enjoy history even more!
My name is Denise. Please call me De. I live in the US near Chicago though I grew up outside Baltimore. I am a Sr. Instructional Designer. While I read many different genres, I love to learn about cultures through their history. Then to read historical fiction placed in those times to get more of a flavor, a context that strictly non fiction accounts can't give as well. I am especially interested in the British Isles and in Ancient Cultures. Political history as well, both in the US and other places. I look forward to participating :)
Thanks

Hello all, my name is Jani and I'm 41 years old man from Finland (currently living in Southern Sweden). I have been interested in history for all my life and I also took some classes in history while I was in college. I'm working as an engineer, but when I'm reading I spend most of that time reading about modern history. At the moment I'm focusing on American Civil War, which I'm not so familiar with, and on World War I.
Bob Krenzel here! I am an avid reader of history, especially military history. Having traveled quite a bit in the Army, I love studying the history of places I have visited or am about to visit. There is nothing quite like reading about a battle, and then walking the ground and seeing where history happened!
Hi. I'm Lynden and I'm a 16 year old high school student with a passion for history. I am super interested in reading and discussing history and history books with knowledgeable and interesting people. Not a lot of my friends are eager to chat about such things, so i'm glad to have the chance to do that in this group :)
Hi. So glad to have found this group for the book suggestions alone. I am no kind of scholar. Just enjoy reading history, mainly western European and Asian. Will mainly lurk.
Hi! I am Amr from Alexandria, Egypt and i am interested in reading history books, specially military history. This is the first group i join and i wish it to be a pleasant experience.
Hi! I'm Patty. I'm a retired programmer from Intel Corp. I lived in California most of my adult life. I recently moved to Colorado to escape what was happening politically in CA. I first became interested in politics after I left Intel because I was interested in what was happening with taxes and politics in California. To understand politics, you really need to understand history. Having never been interested in history when I was in school, I was surprised to find out that I'm now very interested in all history from all around the world, from all centuries. I was interested in starting my own book club to help educate people in history & politics until I found your book club. I reviewed the current books on your list & decided to start with "On Politics". Thanks for moderating this book club!

With your interest in American Civil War here are a few book recommendations:
Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin (About Lincoln, his political genius in crafting his cabinet and leading the country through the Civil War)
Crucible of Command by William C. Davis (A parallel look at the country's two greatest generals during the war, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant, from birth through the end of the war, how their lives were similar and dissimilar)
Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson (As the title states, this is the story of the hunt for Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth)
Killing Lincoln by Bill O'Reilly (O'Reilly takes an unconventional approach to the telling of Lincoln's assassination, it is like reading history and a novel all at once).
I hope you try one of the above and if you do, let us know what you think.
Charles
Hi! I'm Cony, 31, from Chile. I have a degree in philosophy and I've always been interested in history as well. Now I'm finishing my master, and I'm looking forward to that moment when I'm done, so I can dedicate more time to my other interests. I'm also a mom, a teacher, and an avid reader.
Hi all, I am delighted to be among other history lovers on this site. I teach and obligations prevent me from "free reading" until June, but then I intend to join in the reading and the conversation.
