Hello all!

I'm Ben, I'm a 17 year old student from the UK, and I'm aspiring to study PPE at university.

I know that PPE doesn't really clash all too much with history in and of itself, but it's down to natural human interest that I enjoy reading snippets from the past.

I think my small interest in history began when I had been hypnotised into the ideology of Marxism, which has thankfully now faded away. I was always keen to learn about the USSR, Maoist China, Eastern Africa, and the earlier attempts to implement Communism in Paris, Germany and England especially.

For now, I think my interest in history has taken a sharp focus on ancient empires - Rome and Egypt especially. That means that I'll be searching this group on the lookout for any books that can teach me anything more about those eras.

Anyway, this looks like a great group, and I'm glad to meet you all.

Hi, My name is Brigid and I live in Sonoma County in the USA. I'm 35 and love reading history (obviously!), though I often don't have patience when the writing is dull. I especially love stories about the sea and the age of sail, ignited in part by the wonderful novels of Patrick O'Brian. I've loved Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea and Caroline Alexander's The Bounty.

Other than that I'm pretty omnivorous in my interests and will be delighted by almost anything if it is well presented. A few favorites include A Distant Mirror, The Devil in the White City, and The Innocents Abroad.
