This was a tough call as this was a classic and there are multiple versions. Based on the page numbers, comparing ISBN numbers on WorldCat and even looking at the word counts, this book does not qualify. Sorry :(

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein

be ok to add for the challenge after I read it? It's considered middle schoolers ~ so higher than the little kids, but lower than young adult. Wanted to see if it would qualify.

I love Chris Grabenstein's books, and this one, though for youngsters, sounds really good. Like a kids version of

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline ~ one of the best books ever. :)

Hi Brooke! I am also a big Chris Grabenstein fan and I just read Free Fall (John Ceepak Mystery #8) by Chris Grabenstein and very happy with the latest John Ceepak installment. I've also enjoyed his Haunted Mysteries so I'll be sure to add this new one to my list, especially since I enjoyed Ready Player One.

Sounds like we have some books in common Rebecca. I too have read most of the Ceepak's, though I haven't managed to read FreeFall or Fun House yet. I do plan to read the Haunted Mysteries as well. So much to read, so little time! :)

I started on the Lemoncello because it caught my attention so much. I've just started but I don't want to put it down. Love Grabenstein's writings. They are so fun!! :) I adored RPO and I think this is going to be so similar.

Karsyn (imzadi) Lisa Kay wrote: "Sorry for the delay, Brooke. We are still discussing."

No problem! It's really no big deal at all. I read 20 some books a month, so if it's not for the tower, then I can just take it off my shelf for it. I already read it, loved it, so it's not a big deal if it can't be used. :)

message 517: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Ah, no reason not to be. I don't like causing issues at all. I'm easy going. Easier to take it off and just not worry about it. Might be a factor for my team if I only read a handful of books for a year, but I think I'll make up for it. :)

message 518: by CountessPaige (new)

CountessPaige de Quantity | 150 comments Announcement

A decision has been made regarding the use of juvenile/children's/middle grade books for Round II. We have decided that we will accept all non-picture books equal to and greater than 160 pages. Little children's books are still not acceptable (for example: Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss , Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. , and Richard Scarry's Best Rainy Day Book Ever by Richard Scarry ).

As you are reading your book, think about the following: does it seem like there are 250 words per page? How many pages have you read in 15 minutes - is it more than normal? When you tag your book look at the other editions - does that version's page numbers look similar to the others. If you have a question, ask in the Page Numbers, Just About Page Numbers... and we will help you out.

For all electronic books (ebook/Kindle/audio) that do not have an equivalent print copy on goodreads, they will still be verified for a word count. In situations where electronic books vary by 100 pages to print editions, those will also be verified.

The Moderators and Countess Paige will still be conducting random spot checks. We reserve the right of veto power over some books, specifically ‘gift books’, ‘novelty books’, or ‘coffee table books’.

Thank you for your time and understanding!

joanne (cabeswaters) Les Misérables by Victor Hugo

This version of Les Mis is more then 500 pages shorter then the goodreads default.
Because it was originally in French, I can imagine that most translations, would be slightly different in terms of word count and the kindle edition was translated specifically for kindle.
Compared with my paperback, roughly 20% of words have a slightly different translation.

I'm pretty sure its still a lot more then 160 pages, but need word count verification anyway.

md - In looking through your posts here, you can add every book except for Athena the Brain (Goddess Girls, #1) by Joan Holub because the Mods are using their veto power.

~Melissa~ I've read the following young children's book this month with my daughter - not sure if any would work so haven't placed them on my shelf until I get approval from the higher power, lol

The Girl Games by Joan Holub
Frindle by Andrew Clements
It's Raining Cupcakes by Lisa Schroeder

currently reading Eleven (The Winnie Years, #2) by Lauren Myracle and Thea Stilton and the Mystery on the Orient Express A Geronimo Stilton Adventure by Thea Stilton

We have a book on Oo's shelf http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/...
that is without page numbers. I believe there has been a discussion here regarding this title and page numbers Juilliard or Else

I am posting to follow up. Any new info on the number of pages?

message 534: by Moderators of NBRC, Challenger-in-Chief (new)

Moderators of NBRC | 33496 comments Mod
In light of our recent juvenile/childrens book decision, we're also considering the conditional approval of most classics, if they meet the page requirements in an available edition.

Please remember that this challenge is supposed to be fun. The page numbers have been established to create fairness to all readers - those who want to read less page numbers and those who read more. Please consider this when you pick up a book and 'tag' it. We are by no means trying to discourage the reading of any book.

Rhonda | 550 comments Regarding redeeming bouncing cupcakes - Are we to check the page count with word count or are we to post the books we want to use here? If we are to do the verification, are there instructions or hints posted somewhere to tell us how to do it? I know the mathematical equation. I have tried in the past to get the word count info from a couple of the sites listed on this thread and have been unsuccessful.

Thanks. I wish I'd seen that. I was probably scrolling too fast. I'm older and slower than I think I am.

I asked because when I was doing some verification to save time on Sunday, I noticed that the number of pages was still "unknown" on her challenge shelf.

Thanks again and Happy Friday!

We will decide on all that after the results of the poll that is in the Captains' Group is closed tomorrow. Though, I'm in favor of having a thread there, just to keep it separate from other page count issues.

If it is there, we will see about posting a list of acceptable sites to verify word count.

Rhonda, I don't feel comfortable entering a page count on that book, as it is so very new. That is why Countess Paige said what she said.

Chris from Moonstone will be reading The Big Blind.

Jane | 705 comments I will in the near future read Daughter of Dragons by Kathleen H. Nelson
None of the edition on GR is the one I have on my Kindle but then that edition doesn't exist on Amazon anymore either.
Other editions have around 320 pages as far as I can see.

Is it possible you can add a pagenumber to this edition?

Allison wrote: "Not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I am reading 1Q84 which is actually 3 books in one. Can I count it as 3 books or just one?"

Allison, if you post them as three separate books, you may. However, if you post the edition you own (borrowed, etc), the only way it could be counted as more than one book is if your Captain uses a "bouncing" cupcake on it. Even then, it would only count for two books. (Unless she wanted to use two "bouncing" cupcakes.)

The "bouncing" cupcake is actually a beta test to see how much difficulty we are going to have with the size, word count, and page numbers of "chunksters." If we can work out the kinks in the system, we will count "chunksters" as more than one book in Round III.
