Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished Song of Susannah this afternoon. I'm loving this series!

Just as I was contemplating on diving into the last book, my email notification sounded. The library was letting me know that the book I had requested was available for download. I'd been thinking about how much I don't want the quest for the Dark Tower to be over, so maybe this is Ka. I'll be starting Death Masks tomorrow.

Sarah | 18549 comments Yes that's the one Janice.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I finished a book! Hurrah!

Finally finished The Oxford Murders that I was reading for Peggy's party.

Hooray Rusalka! Are you feeling any better now?

message 306: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Lol, Rusalka. I hope the book was good.
I brought 3 books to my vacation week thinking "I'm on vacation! I'll read soooo many pages, books and series in one week!". :) Innocent dreamer of me! I managed to read 34 pages in three days and a half...

message 307: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Yes thanks Peggy. You know those times when you know you're really sick, but you don't realise how sick until you're better? One of those.

Major cold. Still coughing and such, Lexx still isn't 100% and he had it a week earlier. Laryngitis, sore throat, cough, sneezing, fever, blocked ears and sinuses, full monty!

Worst thing was work people calling/texting me every day telling me to get to the doctor for antibiotics. It's a bloody virus people, antibiotics do nothing!! ARGH!!!

message 308: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Yuck, Rusalka. Sounds awful. Glad you're feeling mostly better.

message 309: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm glad to hear you are feeling better as well. The cold sounds awful.

message 310: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds awful Rusalka..

message 311: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Glad you are getting hetter Rusalka. Sounds like you've both had a rough time of it.

message 312: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished Second Grave on the Left in the wee hours. It was just what I needed. I think I've been getting a bit too anal about my reading. Yes, there are books on my shelves collecting dust and maybe that's what they're meant to do. Certainly, forcing myself to read them is detrimental. I've been thinking, "I've got to read that, that, that, that, and that before I can get to THIS!" I think I should throw caution to the wind and read a little more spontaneously.

I enjoyed Second Grave so much. I giggled, snorted, and belly laughed my way through it. And tonight, I think I'll start book 3, Third Grave Dead Ahead.

Sarah, in answer to your query, here is my review.

message 313: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Great review, Janice. I have the first book in the series somewhere. I find that I'm similar in my reading habits. I have certain books that I "have" to read before getting to the ones that I want to read. I've also decided to relax a bit with it.

message 314: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Janice, every once in a while I get the bug to just be spontaneous too. It's so hard not to plan with so many challenges and buddy reads but sometimes I think it's necessary to just let go.

message 315: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments Thanks to Janice I read First Grave on the Right in one day. It was great and I laughed out loud a few times. I am like you I have been bogged down trying to read things in a certain order instead of just what speaks to me.

message 316: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I'm glad you enjoyed it, Amanda. It's a fun series.

message 317: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Thanks Janice! Just realised that I bought First Grave on the Right not Second Grave on the Left - close enough :-) Good to hear that the series is enjoyable.

message 318: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Only three graves apart... :)

message 319: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I stayed up till 1:30 reading Third Grave. LOL!

message 320: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 57 comments I'm going to start The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist today. I think it comes under the dystopian banner, which isn't something I usually go for but as I've heard it's pretty good I thought I'd give it a go.

message 321: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments Finished We'll Always Have Paris: A Mother/Daughter Memoir for my Mother/Daughter read and I am ready to lead that little discussion with my mom and grandmother. I liked the book and now I REALLY want to travel to Europe. Mostly Italy and Spain.

Now reading The Golden Lily to work my way through the Bloodlines series. It's a spin off series of the Vampire Academy which I haven't read. But the first book of the Bloodlines series was on my 50 States of Young Adult Fiction book so I decided to finish it up.

message 322: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I started The Dark Tower on audiobook yesterday (all 28 hours of it) and finished Third Grave Dead Ahead. Tonight, I will start Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet. I'm really enjoying this series. It was just what I needed to get me out of my reading funk.

message 323: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I have to take Wayward back to the library before even starting it :( I tried to renew it but someone has requested it so I have to take it back...boo...it has taken me longer than usual to get through the book I am currently reading...school is really getting in the way of my reading for fun time, ;)

message 324: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments Janice wrote: "I stayed up till 1:30 reading Third Grave. LOL!"

Just started the third one. I had to take a break for the buddy read and to actually accomplish some chores. It reminds me a little of a Stephanie Plum series with the humor and pace. I think it is funny (view spoiler)

message 325: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I finished the audiobook of Run by Blake Crouch yesterday evening. It was a highly action packed, edge-of-your-seat, suspenseful, and gruesome book. I gave it 5 stars for its shear entertainment value... despite that I spent the majority of the book cringing!

I started The Paper Magician this morning. It was another randomly chosen book so I hope it is a good one.

message 326: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments I have wondered about the Paper Magician. Amazon keeps recommending it to me.

message 327: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I'm curious about The Paper Magician now too. It sounds interesting!

I might have to read Stephanie Plum then.

I started Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet last night at 10:00 and when I came up for air, it was 1:38 a.m.! I was so shocked. I'll likely finish it tonight... around 1:30 a.m. I'm starting to feel the effects of sleep deprivation, I'm afraid.

message 332: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I finished The Rithmatist for the monthly challenge (it was also the book i chose to read for Peggy's party but I didn't finish it then). I really liked it. Now on to First Grave on the Right for the series challenge. I'm still reading The Song of Achilles for the buddy read.

message 333: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Finished Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet. Looks like I may be plowing through this series to the bitter end. LOL!

message 334: by Lisa (last edited Aug 13, 2015 08:58AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Vanishing Witch for the August monthly challenge. This is the third book by Karen Maitland that I have read and I have yet to be disappointed. There were a few parts of this that didn't quite work for me but I still really enjoyed it. I gave it 4 stars.

I am now going to start Church Of Marvels which sounds like a very intriguing book.

message 335: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments Just finished The Golden Lily. I liked it better than the first book in series. And there are very likable characters in the book but it's still typical "Young Adult Vampires and Romance" so I don't think I will be jumping into a fandom anytime soon.

I just picked up Tiger, Tiger from the library (and just in time, they were only holding it until today!) for the monthly theme read. Really out of my usual reading preferences so I am ready for something different!

message 336: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Going to start Chaos in Death by J.D. Robb since it is a short read.

Then will pick up A Three Dog Life by Abigail Thomas for the August challenge..I want to get it read before the 24th buddy read of Armada by Ernest Cline .

message 337: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I was reading A God in Ruins but it's due in the library and it has a looong waiting list, so I'm frozen it for a while.

I'm starting The Alphabet House. Looks good. Another danish author.

message 338: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sandra - I have a shelf called "started-but-not-finished". I saw "frozen" status and wondered if it was the same thing. :0)

So, was it good, so far? I pre-ordered and downloaded it recently to my Nook.

message 339: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Cherie wrote: "Sandra - I have a shelf called "started-but-not-finished". I saw "frozen" status and wondered if it was the same thing."

I have a "started-come-back-later" shelf. I'm guessing that a number of the books on this shelf will end up moving across to my "abandoned" shelf at some point though.

message 340: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Yes, Cherie. I have a "given-up" shelf for the books I didn't finished and don't plan to finish. And my "frozen" shelf is for the ones are just paused and I plan to resume. I prefer short names for my shelves. :)

A God in Ruins is good so far. I'm pausing it just because it's due (overdue now), but I'll sign up for the queue again. My vacations came in the path. I only read 42 pages in the whole week...
The story is not only about Teddy, but her daughter and grandchildren too. And it's not a sequel, but more a "companion" book. They don't match completely in the time frame, though.
I like the author's writing style. Sometimes is kind of fragmented in time, not only from chapter to chapter, but IN each chapter, and this made it a little slower to read. But it was being enjoyable. It was pleasant to meet again the characters, Ursula, Pamela, Jimmy, Nancy, even Hugh and Sylvia. I'm probably liking it more than Life After Life. But I didn't love LAL, I gave it 3 stars, so not sure if this is too much saying.

message 341: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I have "abandoned" and "pausing" on my shelves for such matters.

message 342: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Sandra, I know what you mean about high hopes of reading lots during vacation but with kids (especially your large crew!) it doesn't get done. ;)

Glad you are enjoying A God in Ruins. I'll be reading that one of these days.

message 343: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Finally I'm not starting The Alphabet House today since it is due tomorrow at the library and can't be renewed. (It seems I lost contact with the calendar this last week...)
So I'll start The Bonesetter's Daughter, but I'll need to pause it for my toppler's choice A Room with a View

message 344: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Funny how we name shelfs. My started-but-not-finished shelf is for books that I DO intend to get back to. I don't have a shelf for simply abandoned, or not finished. I guess I consider them read.

I am glad to hear that the book is good so far, Sandra. I did enjoy LAL very much and like her writing. There just hasn't been any time to start AGiR yet. Maybe we can do a Buddy read when you get it back. We had a great discussion with LAL.

I know how it feels to have to give a book back to the library and get back into the que for it again.

Ryan and I are off to the craft store for yarn for a hat for him and then to Home Depot for toilet innards.

message 345: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments A buddy read is a good idea, Cherie. I know there's a lot of people in this group interested in read it.
I'll try to know when I can have the book again and let you know.

message 346: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Currently plugging away with Sacajawea Sacajawea by Anna Lee Waldo . It's on a 12 +4 title challenge list of mine on another GR group. I'm about half way through the the list and hope it finish by the end of the year, but I don't know if I will be able to. Some of my titles are long, including this one!

message 347: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Wow, Colleen! That is quite the chunkster. Good luck with your challenge.

message 348: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Colleen, even though it is long, it has pretty good ratings. Lots of 5 stars. Are you liking it?

message 349: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I noticed the same. Really highly rated considering the length!

message 350: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm reading The Paying Guests. I've read such mixed reviews about this one but I am really enjoying it. It's not much action but I love the way Sarah Waters just pulls you in with her words. I can imagine every detail of this story.
