That's a shame. The good thing i guess about short story collections is you can put them down and pick them up again where you left off.

I'm planning to read this one for the August challenge. Dog is one of my five "This and That" words. I sampled this one online and am already hooked. Can't wait!

Exactly. I almost feel like I'm in a bit of a reading slump. I just want meaningless fluff at the moment.

Yes I've had one of those recently too. Easy, light, fun reads that don't require much thought or effort seems to be winning out recently for me too.

Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce series really fills the bill for me. She's a wonderful character. I liked the most recent one I've read the best of all so far : )

Speaking from Among the Bones (Flavia de Luce, #5 ) by Alan Bradley

message 209: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Going to start The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton .

message 210: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I needed to read something totally different from my recent choices. I'm reading The Ghost Bride.

message 211: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I love Morton's writing, Stephanie. The Secret Keeper is the only one by her I didn't read yet.

message 212: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I hope you enjoy The Secret Keeper Stephanie. I have it sitting on my TBR pile alongside The Distant Hours which are the two books by her that I haven't yet read. I can't wait for her new book, The Lake House, which will hopefully be published this year.

message 213: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Liking it so far. I'm only a chapter in. At first it was a little too descriptive, kind of like Cold Mountain, so I it wasn't holding my attention. But then the end of the chapter definitely caught my attention!

I've read a couple of books in the series. They are definitely light and quick reads - good for a toppler.

I'm definitely moving it up then. haha

I ended up putting it on hold at my elib. I'm 5th in line.

I love military reads and dog reads so I'll have to check this one out too.

message 222: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments There is just so many books out there. I'm not doing next mobth's challenge and probably not group read just because I'm tryung to get through some purchased books and some of the books that have been recommended to me. I know I've got a few recs from Sarah that it's been a while they been hanging around that I sgould get to. Before goodreads I could never find even 1 book worth reading. Now it's a regular smorgasborg. No clue how to spell that one.

message 223: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments We know what you mean Travis. August is looking busy so I'm hoping to combine toppler and challenge or peggy's party and challenge. I too will be skipping the group read as I don't own any books which fit the theme. Actually working through owned books sounds like a plan.

message 224: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Yes, August is turning to be a challenge itself.
I'm not sure about the monthly read either. I'm having problems to decide what to read. Otherwise, I think I'm ready for the monthly challenge, Peggy's Party and two books for the series challenge. I'm waiting to take a look to the toppler proposal to decide if I'll be able to do it or not. Usually the one day toppler never works for me. No way I can read a book in one day with all that's going on in here.
Anyways, is perfectly fine to turn some things down sometimes. Reading is suppose to be funny, not a chore!

The Absolutist was the first book I read in 2015 and it remains the best book I have read all year. That could change of course but it's going to take something really mind blowing to knock it off the top spot. It had me crying my eyes out and I don't often cry at books. I'm glad you are enjoying it so far Tasha. I hope you enjoy the rest of it too :)

message 226: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I do take a break from group activities a couple times a year. Of course I'd get through books faster if I read less books that are 1000 pages long.

message 227: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I decided that challenges, group reads, etc must be filled by books I already own. But, we all know how easy it is to throw the good intentions out the window.

message 228: by Tasha (last edited Jul 28, 2015 07:37AM) (new)

Tasha I do remember you really enjoyed that one, Lisa. It helped bump it up on my to-read list. :)

I've been thinking of taking a little break soon too and work on the series challenge. I'm so far behind on that one! I will be doing the roman read, peggy's party and this or that challenge so I may take September-October off and just focus on series reads. Too many good books and recs out there on GRs!!

message 229: by Stephanie (new)

I am really behind on the series challenge too. I might have to devote a month or two just to that as well.

message 231: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I started The Chaperone last night. It was picked for me in another group's challenge. It's been on my tbr for a long time, so I'll be happy to cross it off. Later today, I'll start Dog on It on audiobook for my serial killer challenge. It's also been on my tbr for a long time. Cleaning house. Well, not quite since I bought three new books. It's two steps forward, and three back.

message 232: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I started Euphoria the other day but found that I wasn't really in the mood for it right now so I have set it aside for the time being.

message 233: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Just finished The Forgotten Girls. Wow. 5 stars. Although I had an idea of who and why around 60% into the book, it was a page turner and I kept biting my nails until the end. I'm glad I found this author, I'll check more by her for sure.

Starting now A God in Ruins. It's near 500 pages, so I'll need to stop it for my Peggy's party book but it's ok. I'm anxious about this one.

Oh! I really wanted to read this one. None of my GR friends have reviewed it yet though. Glad you gave it 5 stars. I'll have to check it out.

message 235: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I really enjoyed Kristie. I admit I found a few inconsistencies things somewhere, but it was a great read. I'm not usually go to bed 2 in the morning because I can't stop reading...

I quite liked the first book in the series (These Broken Stars), but I thought the second one was a major disappointment, only gave it two stars.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am reading The Book of Salt. It was another food challenge pick. It is about Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein and their Vietnamese cook Binh in France in the 1930s. I also am listening to The Catalans: A Novel just because it is narrated by Simon Vance.

message 243: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments Finally picked up We'll Always Have Paris: A Mother/Daughter Memoir so time to read that for my Mother/Daughter read!

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments Starting my book for the This or That Challenge
The Light Between Oceans it looks like it has alot of good ratings so I am excited to read it.

It seems I am reading alot of books about ships this year so why not one with a lighthouse. It is interesting when you look at the books you've read and notice a theme.

message 245: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I read We Were Liars for Peggy's PhD party. Unfortunately this was a 1 star read for me. Still, at least there is one less book sitting on my TBR pile now :) Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I am now starting Augustus for this month's group read.

message 246: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments For those who mentioned a reading slump, I've been in something of one myself.

I've always wanted to get into Comic Books/Graphic Novels, but never really knew when to jump in, so I just kind of jumped in and picked up a few titles that haven't really ever been highlighted in the MCU or the DECU like (Birds of Prey, Vol. 1). Saga #1 completely grabbed me, and am now worried that 1/2 my paycheck will be spent at Comix.

Back to the book world, I'm continuing to read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes as my breakfast read. I really like short stories in the morning, and Sherlock is perfect. Just downloaded The Aeneid for the group read, and am trying to get through The Fall of Five now on audio. I'm starting to cool on this series, but am determined to finish it.

All of this will be put on hold for Armada once my hold comes in at the library. I'm really excited for this book.

message 247: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments I am in a long audio book right now but as soon as it is done I can start Armada, it seems to have mixed reviews. I know Sarah was wanting to read this too. Maybe a buddy read??

message 248: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I'd second a buddy read for Armada (still new enough here that I'll likely need some direction in how it works). I'm trying not to have too high an expectation for it, because that inevitably leads to disappointment. I think Ready Player One was such a surprise, that any follow-up is going to be viewed under a microscope.

I'm waiting for the 3rd in the serie
