Sarah | 18549 comments I have set up a buddy read thread for Armada so check out the buddy read folder for it. Buddy reads are similar to group reads- we just read the book together and discuss as we go.

Hehehehe! Good one, Kandice.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I managed to finish a few books this weekend - Fairest, Magic Burns and Dog on It.

I'm planning on crawling into bed tonight with Antony and Cleopatra. Tomorrow, I'll start Song of Susannah.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm reading The Shadowy Horses for the group read, but it doesn't fit the theme after all, so now I'm reading it for fun. It's a quick and okay read so far, nothing special but not bad either. I'm a bit disappointed that it isn't the dual-timeline story I expected it to be.

Bummer! I haven't read any of her books, so I will leave it on my TBR for now.

message 258: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I'm stuck in last month's books and I am avoiding the two books in the trilogy I need to kill off my current level. I can't start any more new books.

message 259: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I'm reading Crow Hollow for the This and That Challenge. Good so far. I have a few others starte but my interest waned a bit. I'll go back to them soon.

message 260: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I cracked open Antony and Cleopatra last night - all 3" of it - and read the first couple of pages. It wasn't reading like a novel and I'm not in the mood for I book I have to work at. So, I've decided to put it back on the bookcase for now. I'm undecided about what bedtime book I'm going to read.

This has been on my TBR for a while and I was thinking of bumping it up a bit but I don't think I will bother to do that now.

Jackie | 57 comments I'm starting No Safe House by Linwood Barclay today. Should be a fast, decent read with a few twists along the way!

message 263: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I finished listening to Her Fearful Symmetry yesterday. It was a very character driven book with a couple of twists thrown in that I actually figured out ahead of time. I wasn't expecting a ghost story when I started the book, so that was a surprise, but an interesting one. I enjoyed (but not necessarily liked) all of the characters in the book, most especially the upstairs neighbor with OCD. His side-story was probably my favorite. Overall, a 4.5 star read for me.

message 264: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm reading The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton. I'm almost halfway through. The thing I don't like is that the story keeps going back and forth between years so it is just ok for me so far.

message 265: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments Last night I finished The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman. Overall, I loved her previous foray into HF, The Dovekeepers, but I thought it was a little too long. (In the sense of needing 50 or so pages lopped off and/or tightened.) But this book was amazing- the atmosphere, the descriptions. Perfect, at times almost like being in Fauvist/Impressionist painting.

I just started Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship by Robert Kurson. FYI, Kurson's other diving adventure book, Shadow Divers, is on sale for Kindle. ($2.99)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sorry you don't like the book so much Stephanie. I always like those switches :)

message 267: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments The switches between past and present are absolutely her style. All Morton's books have them.

message 268: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I like the switches in Morton's books too.

I'm glad to see you liked this one. This one gets such mixed reviews and has a low rating on GRs but it's on my radar.

message 272: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie It's not a bad story. I wouldn't mind the switches if they weren't so often :( I start to get really interested in what's going on and then it switches back to "present day" or the past and I'm like..."ugh!" I was just getting interested in what was going on again.

message 275: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I just finished Wayward which was much better than the first in the series. I'm now finishing up The Rithmatist which I started during Peggy's Party but never finished. I'm liking it a lot.

message 276: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Yay, Sarah! I'm glad to hear the 2nd one is better :) have you watched the TV show at all?

message 277: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments No not yet but I want to now. Book 2 ends on a cliff hanger so I'll be reading book 3 soon.

message 278: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie We just watched the season finale of season 1. It was pretty good :) ended on a cliff hanger as well.

I was hesitant about it because of the mixed reviews. I can see where it wouldn't be for everyone, but I enjoyed it. But I also think that if I hadn't been in the right mood for it, I might not have liked it as well.

Are any of you like that? A book that you might normally love is just mediocre when you are in certain moods? Or vice versa?

Yes, I'm the same KimeyDiann. There have been quite a few books that I haven't enjoyed because I just wasn't in the mood for them at the time but I forced myself to keep reading them anyway. If I had just put them aside for a while and come back to them when I was more in the mood, I probably would have enjoyed them a lot more. I am starting to do that a bit more now though.

message 281: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same here. Actually, the book I'm currently reading seems to be one of those.

message 282: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Glad I'm not the only one. I had a really hard time picking out my next audiobook because nothing seemed to fit my mood. I finally just randomly decided to listen to Run by Blake Crouch. So far it is interesting. It is a very edge-of-your-seat, what-is-going-to-happen sort of book. It is definitely making my commute more interesting. If it weren't for cruise control I would probably be going way over the speed limit while listening to it!

I just finished the miniseries, and it wasn't bad, I'd wondered if the books were worth picking up?

I've been listening to the audio book of The Fall of Five, but it's kind of ridiculous. I think the choice to use three different narrators for the different POVs was a mistake. At least since their takes on the voices are so different. The guy who's narrating for the (presumably) main character, is just hilariously wrong for the part. Everyone sounds like old Jewish men from New York and his female voices have me in hysterics.

message 287: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Thanks for the info on the narrator, Lynda. I'll probably stick to the paper copies of the Lorien Legacies series.

message 288: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I'm definitely going to go back to the ebook, Kristie. How are you liking the series?

message 289: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I've only read the first one so far, but I really enjoyed it. I've picked up a couple others in the series, but I haven't gotten to them yet.

message 290: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I really enjoyed the 2nd book in the series, my favorite so far...happy reading.

If you're in the mood for a fluffy type book, have you read Gini Koch's alien series? The first one is Touched by an Alien. Yes, they're on the long side, but they read really fast.

message 293: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Augustus for this month's group read. I enjoyed it but not quite as much as I thought I would. I gave it 3 stars but my actual rating is 3.5.

Next up for me is The Vanishing Witch which is my pick for August's monthly challenge.

Roz | 4528 comments I finished Crow Hollow for the This and That Challenge. I've had it on my kindle for a while and don't recall why I bought it, except that it must have been cheap. I was pleasantly surprised, and quite liked it (4 stars). It takes place in New England in the 1676 and concerns the circumstances surrounding a conflict that was part of King Philip's war between the English settlers and their Nipmuk native neighbors. I especially liked the main character, Prudence Cotton. She became stronger as the story progressed, doing what women of her time wouldn't dream of doing.

Which book? Second Grave on the Right? Will do. :) So far, I've been giggling and snorting. I love the humour in it. The mystery is cohesive unlike some where you wonder how they got from point A to point B. I'm at about 50%.
