Bella | 502 comments Well, I finished Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee. And, I'm pretty much disgusted and appalled. The only reason I'm going to give this book a 1-star rating is that I can't give it zero. This is a book that's so bad- content wise- that I don't only hate it, I now hate TKAM. Oh, and I hate Scout and Atticus, too. It's so bad that Harper Lee's place in American literature will be changed. I'd be surprised if To Kill a Mockingbird will be widely read in 50 years.

I know some will want to excuse her disgusting views on race as a "product of her times", but keep in mind that Hawaii by James A. Michener was published in 1959. And Michener's ultimate evaluation was that multi-culturalism was good. The sad thing is that I think Lee is too out of it to repudiate her views in Go Set a Watchman. And I think that not publishing it may indicate that she did reject those ideas

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I have no intention of reading Go Set a Watchman because of all the controversy and because I don't to spoil my opinions of the characters I fell in love with in TKAM, including the great movie.

It's a shame that the publishers appear to have taken advantage of Harper Lee.

Going to have to get my hands on this. I thought Wolf's Hour was excellent.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Read in one day Empire of Ivory, Temeraire #4. I couldn't put it down it was so suspenseful. I always have this fear of Temeraire and Lawrence being permanently parted. Their relationship is deeper than a marriage and they would just wither and die without each other. This one ended in a cliffhanger, so I already have the next one ordered.

Currently reading another Merrily Watkins mystery, The Remains of an Altar. Excellent stuff, so far.

message 106: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I am loving City of Glass, the 3rd book in the Mortal Instruments series. This series is like Harry Potter meets Twilight :)

message 107: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Does the series get better? I read the first book, but never had the desire to read the second, I also have her first book in her other series, I haven't read that yet either.

message 108: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I would say yes, Berit :) I think I like the 3rd book the best so far because I feel like all the characters so far have a purpose now.

message 109: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) OK, maybe I should give the second book a chance ;-) thanks!

The Merilly Watkins series looks good. Is it good enough to buy or is it only good enough to borrow from the library?

message 111: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Oh good :) I hope you like it, Berit!

message 112: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Hi Bella:

I would be glad to own the Merrily Watkins series. It's something I would reread. I rarely buy books anymore... just no room.

Why not borrow the first from the library and see what you think first?

They don't have the first book. (Or the second, third... the do have the one you just read, though.)

message 114: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Thanks Bella for your honest thoughts on the book. It is truly a shame and it will be a sad thing if it affects TKAM's readability. I won't be reading it.

Can't remember who mentioned Dexter is Dead now. I said another book was due out - I got confused. Dexter's Final Cut was going to be the last and now they've bought out Dexter is Dead. Don't shoot me...

message 115: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments That's awful about Go Set a Watchman, Bella. I don't intend to read it. I have been wanted to read TKAM for years and definitely do not want the experience ruined.

Oh, I mentioned the Dexter book. I do remember, as you do, that Dexter's Final cut was supposed to be the last as well. But, (view spoiler)

message 118: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I finished reading Spice God last night for the Dinner Bell challenge. Not a great book. I have no idea what I want to start on now. I need a series book because I only lack 5 points killing level 4 for the yearly challenge.

I've been working on rereading the Harry Potter series, I could start on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but I'm not sure if that is what I'm in the mood for.

I have the second book in the Gretchen Lowell series (Sweetheart) that has been sitting on my nightstand for a couple of months now. I have to get a new bedside lamp for nighttime reading though.

I could also continue on with the Dark Hunters series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, I can't remember which one is next but I know it is already loaded up on my Kindle.

Decisions decisions. I guess I'll figure it out when I start to read before bed tonight. lol.

message 119: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Bella, that's a shame you can't get the first Merrily Watkins books from your library. I'd try buying the first one and then see what you think. I get the books I buy used from Amazon in like new to good condition. I've rarely been disappointed with the condition of a book I've ordered that way.

message 120: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I decided to start on Seize the Night last night. Mostly out of convenience. I'm going to try to find a new bedside lamp this weekend since I do most of my reading before going to sleep and the lack of a lamp has curtailed my reading of physical books.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Finished The Bean Trees yesterday for the monthly challenge and The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating for the buddy read this morning. Both 3 stars for me. But GOOD 3 stars.

I'm now reading Still Alice for my book club meeting next Monday, and plan to finishThree Men in a Boat, which was my book for last month challenge, but finally put aside because I got hooked to other books.

I have The Sea Garden as my beautiful cover choice, and plan to start it sometime during the weekend.

Just received an email from my local library and A God in Ruins and The Forgotten Girls are waiting for me. So I'll go this way after The Sea Garden.

Jackie | 57 comments I'm starting Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey today.

message 123: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm really curious about that one.

message 125: by Cherie (last edited Jul 17, 2015 01:29PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sandra - did you say you already read the 2nd book of Barbara Kingsolver's Greer Family Pigs in Heaven? I think I have both of them at home (from the library sales shelf). GOOD 3 stars is "good" to know. :)

I love this cover. Pigs in Heaven (Greer Family, #2) by Barbara Kingsolver

message 126: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started the strange and beautiful sorrows of ava lavender and absolutely love it so far. The writing is beautiful and the story gives me a feeling like Amelie and Chocolat (the movie)

message 127: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments No. I read Flight Behavior and The Bean Trees by Kingsolver. I didn't really like FB, but I enjoyed TBT. I added Pigs in Heaven to my TBR. I'd like to know how the story goes on. It has mixed reviews, though.

message 129: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Really enjoying my recent and current reading. For serial challenge, just finished Speaking from Among the Bones. Now reading Nyphron Rising. Just completed The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating for a buddy read. Now reading The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness just because.

message 130: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am reading Friendship Bread today. On my iPod so I cannot link.

message 131: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Trapped (iron Druid #4), the Sound of a Wild Snail Eating and two Nero Wolfe audio books. One more Food book and maybe I can decide if I will buy my Beautiful Cover book.

message 132: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished The Magicians for my THIRD group themed read book! Today, I will start Grave Peril for the serial killer challenge.

I suddenly have a backlog of books downloaded from the library. Somehow, I have to fit them all in while I continue to slog away at Blackberry Wine.

message 133: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Edge of Dark for the Beautiful Covers group read. I gave it 4 stars because I enjoyed it a lot but I did have a couple of problems with it too.

I am now going to start Tooth and Claw which I have heard described as 'Jane Austen but with dragons'. I am quite excited about this I have to say.

It is a beautiful cover too!

Kristie | 19137 comments Just finished Night Broken to kill off another series & level. :) Starting The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul for the July challenge tomorrow.

message 136: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Just finished City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3) by Cassandra Clare to add to the serial killer challenge. I still have a few books to go in this series but this book was so intense! My favorite book in the series this far for sure!
Next, I'm reading Suspect by Robert Crais thanks to a recommendation by Berit in our group :)

message 137: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started Spirit's End for the series challenge. When I finish it, I will finally (after three months) get my level 3 badge!

message 138: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I finished Still Alice yesterday. It was a really moving reading. I like when a book makes me learn something new, know something interesting, or understand someone better. I'm sure it will make a great discussion tonight at my book club meeting.

I started The Sea Garden, and although I'm only 12 pages into it, I already want to visit this garden...

Peggy, I'm not even done with level 1! I have been reading stand alone the whole year, and getting distracted from the series...

message 139: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm finishing up Sister which has been on my radar for a while. It's a good read with an interesting mystery.

message 140: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Started reading Suspect by Robert Crais and I am already sniffling :( I hope the whole book doesn't make me cry :(

message 141: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Thewholebook shouldnot make you cry I'm sure

message 142: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I'm slogging too Janice with Blackberry Wine. I don't feel in the mood for it right now. I'm thinking I'll probably end up abandoning it for now although that means I won't get a badge for this month's challenge. I'm still reading Three Moments of an Explosion: Stories which I'm enjoying. There are quite a few really good stories, some which are so-so, and some which I like but have no idea what they are about. I'm 80% in so I'll definitely finish this one.

message 143: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I sure hope not, Travis :)

I'm on the downward slope so I'll stick with it. I'm eating apple pie right now which is mentioned as something they ate during the summer in the book. At least I can savour that part.

message 145: by Caitlin (last edited Jul 21, 2015 09:22AM) (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments Finished A Beautiful Dark on a plane ride home. It was Colorado on my 50 states of YA fiction list. Taking a break from YA at the moment to finally bear down and finish Bearing An Hourglass and it's still giving me trouble! But I am more than half way through and a year overdue on finishing it so it shall be done!

But I am waiting for A Fractured Light (the next book on the Beautiful Dark Trilogy- I can finish a series!)from the Library. I wasn't in love with the first one and I feel like it did not answer any questions that I needed answered. Plus with a cliff hanger like that, I HAVE to read the next one. I liked the concept the author is working with about angels and magic however.

I am also waiting for We'll Always Have Paris: A Mother/Daughter Memoir (from the Library) that I will be reading with my Mother and Nana in August as part of our "Mother/Daughter Bi-Monthly Read"

message 146: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I liked the Mother/Daughter Read, Caitlin. Is this something only you three do, or you join a group of other mother, daughters and grandmas?

message 147: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments Sandra wrote: "I liked the Mother/Daughter Read, Caitlin. Is this something only you three do, or you join a group of other mother, daughters and grandmas?"

We are actually trying it out for the first time this August! We just pick a book, have it finished by the 15th and then have a discussion (via email) on the book based on three questions that the book picker comes up with. I picked the book this time around. We live in three different cities so this is a way to do something together but separately.

message 148: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments It's a great idea, Caitlin! It's great you could find a way of sharing something all of you love.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That sounds like a great idea Caitlin!

message 150: by Kristie, Moderator (new)
