I really like that idea, Caitlin.

I'm reading Dust by Hugh Howey, which is the last part of a dystopian sci fi trilogy. I enjoyed all books in this series, even though now when I look back I think some plot twists weren't very believable and I don't like some characters. Also, it is depressing as it tells the story of a future where Earth is dead and the remnants of humanity live in a huge 120 + levels silo, pretty claustrophobic... But overall it's interesting and entertaining, and it will allow me to kill a level in reading the series challenge :) .
I've been wanting to read the Silo Series for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I only hear good things about it so I'm not sure why I haven't picked it up yet. I really need to do so.
I'm reading The Origins of AIDS by Jacques Pepin, because I homeschool and my son is really interested in viruses. (I think because of the Ebola scare; we had a friend visiting family in Africa and were panicked that they wouldn't let him return.) So, we've studied a lot of the viruses that cause disease and now we're moving into retroviruses, like AIDS.The Origin of AIDS is pretty science heavy, so perfect for what I'm after. But if you don't really love science, it's probably not for you- the book is barely at the level for what a lay person would want to read. However, the scholarship appears excellent.

Yeah, I agree that Dust is a great ending because it wraps up neatly all the stories from both previous volumes. But I think I liked the first book the best, anyway, when I didn't know what was going on yet.
I also liked Wool, however I think the problem that I had with is was that I read Wool 1 prior to starting the omnibus, so (view spoiler) Otherwise, I thought the first one was great too. It was just me being stuck on something.
I finished the Eli Monpress series with Spirit's End and really enjoyed it. Next, I'm finally going to start The Shadow of the Wind. I've been putting it off forever and I have no idea why. First I thought it would be boring and long-winded, but after seeing so many positive reviews I got worried it would disappoint. And I want to love it too!

I hope you enjoy The Shadow of the Wind Peggy. I have literally run out of words to describe how much I love that book!
I just downloaded His Majesty's Dragon to my iPod. I have had it on hold for almost 4 months. Oh, Peggy - the hype doubts are getting to you. I am sure you will love TSoTW. I am with Lisa. I loved it too. I tell everyone to read it.
Cherie, I've got His Majesty's Dragon downloaded on my kindle (library loan). I'm hoping to get into it this weekend.
I have three other library books that need to be finished, but HMD is the one I want to get started on. I need to do some serious reading this weekend!Roz - I am enjoying Frendship Bread, but I left my Nook tablet at work yesterday. Was okay because I listened to another Nero Wolfe audio book and finished it last night while I was doing my last jigsaw puzzle. I did not care too much for it at first, but the characters have grown on me and I want to see what happens to them all and how the "starter wars" end up. I never did find out if my daughter has some starter in her freezer. I may need to buy the book so I have a copy of all of the recipies.
I copied and pasted the recipes from the book and saved them on my iPad. My first attempt at making the starter was a disaster. The ants crawled all over the bag and the mixture kept separating. Part of the problem may have been that I used fat free milk. But then I figured this is an old recipe so I tried again and used whole milk. It's now day 6 and it's working like a charm. I'll be baking on Tuesday and picking my victims for a bag of starter too.
I finished Grave Peril which is book 3 of the Dresden Files. I'm going to jump right into book 4, Summer Knight.
I'm starting The Son in Law by Charity Norman today. Have read & enjoyed a couple of her other books.
That's great then, because I really enjoyed Grave Peril. I just hope James Marsters stops with the heavy sighing and sounding like he's so bored with the whole thing.

Berit! I am so glad you recommended this book! I am loving it so far. I really like the parts where the author tells the story how Maggie the dog sees things. The bond that her and Scott share so far is so sweet :-)
So glad you like it! I thought of you after I read it, it is perfect for a dog lover, it's a great book even if you're not, :-)
Oh sure I've recommended that book like 100 times and never get any props but Berit walks in one time and nothing but love. Lol. Just messing.someone along the line orobably enjoyed it after my rec
Travis of NNY wrote: "Oh sure I've recommended that book like 100 times and never get any props but Berit walks in one time and nothing but love. Lol. Just messing.someone along the line orobably enjoyed it after my rec"CRacked me up - thanks! Ha!
Travis of NNY wrote: "Oh sure I've recommended that book like 100 times and never get any props but Berit walks in one time and nothing but love. Lol. Just messing.someone along the line orobably enjoyed it after my rec"ROFL! Travis, you get lots of love.
I finished Tooth and Claw which I rated 4 stars. Think Jane Austen and Anthony Trollope but with dragons instead of people and that should give you a fairly good idea of what this book is like. The world Jo Walton created was very well done and the whole thing was unique, engaging and very enjoyable. I would recommend checking this out if you are a fan of dragons and are looking for something that is a bit different from the norm.I am also just under 600 pages into my reread of Cross Stitch (Outlander).

Even if it made my cry at the beginning :)
Janice wrote: "That's great then, because I really enjoyed Grave Peril. He stuffed up a word, swore, corrected and kept going. Totally wasn't edited out and so very much made our day.
Have you watched Buffy or Angel? I don't think James Masters is bored. I think it's just James Masters. And it amuses me greatly as I think of him as Spike the whole time. I must say though that if it is a reader I like I ignore all those little ticks. Lexx was listening to a Jim Dale narration the other day and he has a slight lisp on one letter and it drove me absolutely mental.
I agree with Travis. I liked Grave Peril but Summer Knight is really where it gets it's shit together. I believe my copy of the audiobook had Jim Butcher come in and admit that.
We just got back to Dresden while driving to and from Sydney this weekend. Picked it up since going to the vineyard outside Melbourne in March. Missed him.
I finally, finally, finally finished Bearing An Hourglass after starting it over a year ago. When On a Pale Horse was so good I expected the same from this one. Unfortunately there was too much about physics and time theory in it for me to be intrigued. It took me three days to finish the last 50 pages because I literally kept falling asleep. I am hoping this series doesn't have one hit single and that With a Tangled Skein is great. BUT I am not reading that yet! A Fractured Light arrived from the library and I am ready yo read it. I need to find out what happened!!
Yeah, Tasha I think that rec was during a toppler. While Suspect is his only dog book I know of. All of Robert Crais books I've read have been wuite entertaining, although his older stuff is a bit dated as many detective stories tend to get after a while with the technology and stuff. Now Suspect was rumored to be a movie. I dob't know if it ever happened or maybe that is what the current dog movie playing is based on. I have no idea other than a year ago people were talking of it as a movie

I would find the blooper funny, too. Here's hoping it's on my edition. I'm quite enjoying it so far.
No, never watched Buffy. Maybe that's my problem.
I finished The Lost Empress which I really enjoyed. It was for the series challenge. I do wonder whether I'd like them as much if I wasn't in to family history. Now on to another series read with Wayward.
Finished
this morning. I am in love with this book and I really wish it was a series. (view spoiler)
Finished The Sea Garden for the beautiful cover monthly read. I discussed it in the thread, so I'm skipping this part here. I'm starting The Forgotten Girls. It's a mystery by danish author Sara Blaedel. It's the 4th in a series of 9, but not all of the books in the series are translated to English.
I'm struggling with Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales. Anthologies aren't my favourite, and I think the timing is off. I think I'll return it to the library and pick it back up another time.
I just started Blue-Eyed Child of Fortune: The Civil War Letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw- the first part of the book is a shot biography. If you're old enough you may remember the movie Glory, which is about the first all black regiment, that Shaw commanded, during the Civil War. Interesting fact not in the movie: two sons of Frederick Douglass were in this regiment.
Stephanie there is a series with a marine and his dog. Only one book is published The Kill Switch. It was similar that part of the book is ib the dog's perspective. I think I would have been happier if it was a little less militaristic and a little more on the dog and partner but it wasn't bad.
Added it to my TBR! Thanks, Travis! Books told from the dog's perspective are some of my favorites:-)
Finished A Fractured Light in a day and I am now dismayed to learn that my local libraries do not have a copy of A Radiant Sky (gasp!) so I may have to get it for my Nook or try and find it at the Half Priced Bookstore. Waiting for my library branch to be open tomorrow to pick up We'll Always Have Paris: A Mother/Daughter Memoir which is waiting for me. This is for my Mother/Daughter read that I mentioned early in this thread.
But until then I am entertaining myself with Percy Jackson's Greek Gods because I love Percy Jackson. And Greek myths told from the perspective of a teenaged boy is proving to be quite comical.
During September I want to read some Poe (as in Edgar Allen) in order to prepare from some October events at work (I work at a museum and we are doing some events in partnership with a local reading organization). Any Poe suggestions?
