Thanks, I'll read both then.

Kristina | 588 comments Just finished John Dies at the End by David Wong because my husband loved it and wants to see the movie later this month. That was a strange one... Good, but strange.

message 55: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments I just finished listening to Odd Interlude: A Special Odd Thomas Adventure. It had a big SF component. I'm continuing to listen to The Twelve.

I've got a bunch of books going on my Nook. I just finished Sandman Slim. I don't know why I bothered finishing it. I didn't really like it and it was a Free Friday selection anyway. I'm now reading The Twelve Tribes of Hattie. It's a good lit fic choice because each chapter is a self-contained story.

I've also started my first graphic novel, Locke and Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft. I'm having a really hard time. The print is really small and it can't be re-sized. I'm also a little to easily distracted to focus on it.

message 56: by Hershel (new)

Hershel Shipman (hershdawg) | 43 comments I powered through Old Man's War so I read and finished Assassin's Apprentice. Now working on The Caves of Steel and the The Iliad.

Go big or go home.

Christopher Johnson | 15 comments Did Old Mans War in 2 days. Listening to the Void series by Peter F. Hamilton on my trip to and from work. Reading, Railsea now, Memory of Light as soon as it comes out, and the 3rd Dresden files book which the name escapes me at the moment.

I actually got hooked after Vol. 2 (head key ftw). I didn't like all the flashbacks in Vol. 1.

John (agni4lisva) | 362 comments This month I will be finishing off The Hobbit and then tackling Old Man's War.

Once that is done I will have to prepare for A Memory of Light. I want to re-read the whole of the series, so that is perhaps my project for 2013!

message 68: by Aildiin (new)

Aildiin | 150 comments Just started one of the biggest re-read I will ever do in my whole life. That is re-reading the whole Malazhan book of the Fallen.
Weirdly enough I will most likely start the other big re-read in a few months, that one being the Wheel of time (but at least inWoT case I have only ever read the first 8 books)
Weirdly enough, before this I had only ever re-read a handfull of novels. But I guess this the price you pay for reading huge series that are published over a 20 years period. Next time around I will be smarter and wait most of the books are out before I start something huge... And yes, that includes you Brandon Sanderson, I'm going to wait a few years to touch your Stormlight archive...

message 69: by Mark (new)

Mark (beyondwords_uk) Just finished "Speaker For The Dead", also finishing Cory Doctorows "Little Brother" and then on to Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash". The I have to read

Fuzzy Nation - John Scalzi
Altered Carbon - Richard Morgan
Blackhouse - Stephen King/Peter Straub
Anathem & Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson
Brassman (and 5 more) - Neal Asher
Elantris - Brandon Sanderson
A Dance with Dragons - George R.R. Martin
and lots more including Kurt Vonnegut, and the last 6 Terry Pratchetts.

It will be a busy year and getting a Kindle Fire next month so i can carry more around with me.

Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves by Matthew Reilly

message 71: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António | 64 comments Just finished The Gathering Storm and wow. I'm absolutely speechless. I have no idea how hard it must've been to continue the series by picking it up at book 12, but Brandon Sanderson did an amazing job with it, possibly telling the story better than Robert Jordan himself, in my opinion. Feel free to read my full review here.

Immensely excited to start Towers of Midnight now. I might actually still be on track to start A Memory of Light on release day if I can manage to find the time to read!

message 72: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitanight) | 16 comments Seems like everyone has some sound reading plans for the new year. Personally I'll be reading a lot og George R. R. Martin, the Vaginal Fantasy picks, Sword and Laser picks and some non fiction in the form of art books like Imaginative Realism by James Gurney.

If there are any art geeks out there that need some recommendations I recently made a video with a few good book recommendations that you can find here:

http://www.anitanight.blogspot.no/

Cheers everyone ^^

David(LA,CA) (davidscharf) | 327 comments Dresden is still in my future, but I want to minimize breaks in that series as much as possible. So I'm going to read Empire State now so I don't have a two book break when The Age Atomic comes out later.

message 74: by Titta (new)

Titta (happodan) | 9 comments I finished reading Old Man's War and 1Q84: Books 1 and 2. Both books were very good and I can't wait to continue the series. Now I will start reading Empire of Ivory.

message 75: by Daran (new)

Daran | 599 comments I've built up a substantial backlog of comic books. I'll be reading captain Marvel 6-8, Wonder Woman 13-15, the last few issues of Paul Cornell's run on Demon Knights, as well as a slew of singles and sundries. I've also got the first issue of a book from Dynamite called "Masks" --Justice League style comic featuring The Green Hornet, The Shadow, The Spider, Zorro, and Kato.

After that, A Memmory of Light.

Yay I love that:). I am reading The Silmarillion. Not read that particular Tolkien before so looking forward to it. Only really started properly this morning so still on the letters bit at the front.

I am also reading The Georgian Princesses, which is my bed time read and a re-read.

Dipping in and out of the A Goodreads Gallimaufrey.

I think next might beThe Other Boleyn Girl and some historical romance.

I have a few challenges I signed up for so retrying to keep up with those.

message 90: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António | 64 comments Just finished Towers of Midnight so I have finally caught up, for today anyway. (curse you Portugal and your slowness!)
I went in knowing it would most likely spend a considerable amount of time setting up for A Memory of Light and that's what I got... plus a LOT of Perrin, which felt really unnecessary as he's mostly inconsequencial in the grand scheme of things. I wasn't in love with the alternating timelines either, and while I did enjoy the book, I excepted it to be quite a bit better than it ended up being. Feel free to read my full review here.

I'll be reading A Memory of Light as soon as I can get my hands on the book, and New Spring in the meantime.

message 91: by Derek (new)

Derek Knox (snokat) | 274 comments Downloading A Memory of Light, big book, will take most of the week to listen to. Will be sad to see the series finally end.

For those that haven't looked today, Audible just got a huge infusion of fantasy. Check the just added page for this week, about half the 600 books added are fantasy. Drangonlance, Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, Ebberon. I can see my audio book budget getting all blown to hell. Nice to see them on Audible, but there are a lot.

message 92: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Namadan (jnamadan) | 218 comments Just about to finish listening to Last Argument of Kings and continuing reading Star Wars: Scoundrels. Also reading Outlander for Vaginal Fantasy but struggling with it and it's going to take me a while I think to finish that one.

With new audible credits in hand, I think I'm going to start the journey of listening to the Wheel Of Time series w/ The Eye of the World. If I only listen to WoT, I'll be done with the series in June.

message 93: by Ally (new)

Ally I started Mistborn but am having a hard time getting into it. I might put it on hold and see of it reads better when I'm in a different reading frame of mind.
Also listening to Queen of the Damned on audiobook. The first two in the series I found quite compelling despite technical details that would have driven me crazy in other novels. This one is losing me a little--without one enchanting narrator like Lestat or Louis the story loses some of its charm.
I guess I am just not having reading luck this week.

message 96: by Nancy (new)

Nancy O'Toole (temporaryworlds) | 135 comments I just finished Old Man's War (LOVED it). I'm currently listening to The Map of the Sky by Felix J. Palma, which is at times brilliant, and at times boring (JUST like Palma's The Map of Time!). Old Man's War put me in the mood for more fast paced sci-fi so I'll be picking up Ann Aguirre's Grimspace next.

message 97: by Neil (new)

Neil (rucknrun) A Memory of Light just started it. 41 hours as an audio book, at least it was still only one credit on Audible.

Just finished The Heroes my first Abercrombie book. I think I am going to go back and start from the beginning and get to know this universe better.

Also reading Robopocalypse, it reminds me of World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War. It is a very similar book with a different type of apocalypse. I like how they are structured. Just read the movie got postponed for another year. Boo.

How does David Brin's The Postman compare to the movie?

message 100: by Jim (new)

Jim (kskryptonian) | 202 comments Well, the book has A.I., genetic enhancement and 1980's mansplaining of feminist thought. Sadly, once I read the book, I thought Costner's movie was succinct and well formed. There is a character in the third part of the book that just kills the book for me because the author uses her to float a theory about women and their role in rebuilding society after an apocalypse that he then waters down by having the protagonist claim is insanity. If you were to read the book, then watch the film again, you will see how the scriptwriter expertly cuts all the garbage and crafts a Costner flick out of the disemboweled carcass of a book. IMHO, water world is better.
