What part of Maine are you from Kathryn? My family originally settled near the Sunday River area close to Greenfield.

I live in the western foothills near Bigelow Mountain. It's an unorganized township, Lexington TWP. Bigelow Mountain is across from Sugarloaf, and we live on the other side of that. I believe the owners of Sunday River also own Sugarloaf. Very beautiful.

Oh Kathryn that is such beautiful country. My grand-uncle's original farm still stands near Greenfield. Such a breathtaking view from it. My grandparents were more towards Sunday River but their farm burned down so they relocated to MA. I just love that area and am hoping when hubby retires that we can relocate near there.

Aneela Hi guys, I'm from Birmingham, UK and just discovered the great Stephen King this year. I've already devoured six of his books with Duma Key being my absolute favourite (Wireman is such an amazing character) however I love them all. SK is such a good writer and I can't believe I avoided him all these years as I thought he was one of those second rate horror writers. I was so wrong! Definitely one of the best writers if his generation

Sorry, Pierre-alexandre: didn't spot this response until today. Sounds like a great topic. I'm sure you read "on writing", where king describes his various readers, including the one he writes for... I guess he calls her his "idea reader," his wife. Of course you need a body of work so your readers can be constant. I wonder how King dealt with the idea of his constant readers when he came up with the ending of The Dark Tower. He talks about how dying people would ask him how it would come out while he was in the middle of writing it, and he said he couldn't tell them because he didn't know. I wonder if his concept of constant reader effected the outcome of the dark tower at all. Not that King feels he has an obligation to his constant readers, but I'll bet that choice of an ending was more for himself than anyone else.

Cora (missteacher333) | 4 comments Hi there everyone! I'm Cora and I'm a big fan of SK. Though I don't always like the story, I always love the writing. Besides, I tend to read his works during the most difficult times in my life. Needless to say, I've read most of his books but haven't read one in while. I have Doctor Sleep on my Kindle but life has been pretty damn good the last few years. Hmmm, maybe I'll chance it anyway. Happy reading! :-)

Ryan here - huge SK fan. I'll keep the intro brief, The Shining and Salem's Lot are my favourites and I have a soft spot for the short Strawberry Spring.

eric Clark (darktowerseeker) | 2 comments Greetings Fellow Constant Readers!

Long time reader of Mr. King's work, with Pet Semetary being my 1st read (the summer between jr and sr yrs in high school) and i read it straight thru in one sitting. Have been hooked every since! Absolutely LOVE the Dark Tower series and Mr. King's ability to weave just about everything else into it. Looking forward to chatting up some like-minded King fans! Thanks!

i have not looked into that (VERY new to the boards here) but i certainly will. I am VERY interested to see what others have to say about the ending (i've read them all at least twice, a few of them more than that...) I've always held out hope for...well, lets just say another take on things. Thank you for the invite and heads up on the discussion! Look forward to it!

Catherine | 1 comments Hi Everyone!
I'm Catherine, I live in Calgary, Alberta where it's snowing and has been pretty much all day. I have been reading Stephen King for 30 years (wow, that's a long time). Cujo was the first book I read. Dead Zone is my favourite, although The Stand is right up there. I've read all of Stephen King's books and I'm pretty sure I have all of them, but I'm not 100% sure. I haven't started Doctor Sleep yet, because I'm expecting it for my birthday (later in November). It's nice that there seems to be a new release around this time of year all the time. :-) Anyway, I didn't mean to go on so long, I just wanted to introduce myself. Thanks.

Ian Mcmillan | 4 comments I'm 3/4s through Dr. Sleep. I think you'll enjoy your birthday gift!

message 265: by Nickie (new)

Nickie | 3 comments Hey there group! My name is Nickie and I have been hooked on SK since 7th grade when I found Salem's Lot in my local library. I quickly devoured all that I could find during the summer between 7th and 8th grade, until the librarian banned and removed all of the SK books from the library--which only made me want them more!! I have read and own all of SK's books, except for The Dark Tower books.

Glad to have you here, Nickie... (nice name). Better get into those dark tower books. there's some interesting debates going on about them.

K.L. Turner | 63 comments Hello, my name is K.L. Turner. The K is for Ken. I've always loved Stephen King and am excited to be reading him again after such a long time (it's been years). I love to read and write in my spare time, which unfortunately hasn't been much. I'm reading 'Salem's Lot at the moment and plan to re-read all of his books in order working my way up to the ones I've missed out on when I took my long (too long) break from Mr. King. Maybe I'll get caught up by the time he publishes something else. Anyway, nice to be here and to all, Happy reading!

Cláudia (claudiasfs) | 4 comments Hello everyone.
My name is Claudia and I'm from Portugal. I've been a fan of King since I was 15, when I bought my copy of It in English. I've always loved horror and suspense stories, and he's a master of what he does.
I've been buying his works at random over the years, but since I bought my Kindle I've decided to read all his works by order, including the Bachman books.
It's been an absolute pleasure to re-read some of these and others for the first time.
I already have the new book, trying to make it last, but I did read Joyland in 3 days.
Happy reading to you all!

Welcome Annie. I guess the answer to your question depends on how heavy you like your horror. If you like it by the bucketful try IT, or The Shining or Salem's Lot or Full Dark No Stars; if you want mild or no-horror, try Different Seasons or The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, or The Dead Zone. If you want a long, deep, involving experience that's a little of everything, read for The Stand.

I want to finish re-reading IT before I start Doctor Sleep.
As for the Bachman books, my favorite so far is The Long Story, I had trouble putting it down and do what I had to. With Roadwork I felt such rage coming from it, I was bit baffled, then I saw when he wrote it and understood why it felt like it did.

message 283: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 5 comments Hi, my name is Teresa and I've been a Constant Reader for several years now. My all time favorite King book is The Stand but I love (almost) all of them. Just this year I did a collaboration with the Twitter group @31nitesofhorror to count down the 31 best King horror adaptations. Plus I finally completed my personal collection of King fiction publications; although I still have a few to read. I was looking over the books read, both by King and the other authors and having read many of them myself I figured this was right up my CR alley.

Elmarie Santo (ESanto25) | 18 comments Hi I am Elmarie. I read my first Stephen King book when I was 18 - Pet Semetary - And it was here that my love affair with all things SK began. My favorite SK works include: The Stand, The tommyknockers, The long walk, Survivor type, 1922, The ballet of the flexible bullet, N, The body, and so much much more, its so hard to pick!! Stephen King is my Literary Hero - a true master of the craft :)

message 291: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi there! I am Lianne. I have to say that Stephen King is the author that influenced me to read. I was never a bookworm while growing up. It was actually a stressful task for me to get through just one book. Then, I can upon this amazing author through a friend of mine who was reading "The Stand". At the time I was only 15 so I figured I would try one of his shorter novels: "Firestarter". I was obsessed. Never before had I read a novel that made me so scared of humanity itself.
My favourite novel by far has to be 'IT' (I've read it three times already). Also, one of my favourite out of his short stories would have to be 'Quitters INC.' found in the collection 'Night Shift'.
I'm super excited about this group and pumped to be a part of it!

Honora | 1 comments Hi My name is Honora and I am from the U.K. I love Stephen King and looking forward to reading and discussing these books with you. I am currently reading 'The Shining' which is really scaring me! My favourite King book is 'Duma Key' oh shucks it could also be 'Green Mile'. Loved 'The Black House' with Peter Straub too! Still so many books I have not yet read. Also love Poe and HP Lovecraft, oh and Dean Koontz's 'Intensity' was amazing.

message 293: by Jk (new)

Jk | 5 comments Hi Everyone, my name is Jennifer. I have been a huge King fan ever since 5th or 6th grade when I used to get in trouble for checking his books out of the bookmobile! I own every book he has ever written and have read almost all of them at least once. My all time favorites are It, Gerald's Game and The Stand. Since it has been a long time since I have read many of them I am working on rereading my collection - most recently I have reread Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary and The Shining and I have just started my re-read of Skeleton Crew (The Mist and The Monkey are both awesome!). Coming up next on the re-read list are Cujo and Carrie. Within the past year or so I have read for the first time 11/22/63, Under The Dome, Blockade Billy (I loved the short story Morality that was included!), Cycle Of The Werewolf, Doctor Sleep, Full Dark, No Stars, Joyland, Just After Sunset and The Colorado Kid (probably my least favorite, but still good!). I am looking forward to some interesting discussions here!

message 294: by Kate (new)

Kate | 1 comments Hi everybody, I am Caterina, and I am a King' s fan since I was 8 or 9, the first time I read It. That book haunted my dreams for a long time, but often it didn't let me sleep, so I called my mum, and she didn't come, so I imagined that both my parents were in bed, cold, dead, and I was too scared to get up and go to see them... And I stayed for hours under the sheets, awake, shivering, thinking about monsters with blades instead of teeth... Recently a friend of mine recall that image "you and your fantasy, that mouth with blades frightened me for years!". But I loved that book, and those characters became my first and best friend in a book. I'm sorry for my English, but I'm Italian and my linguistic baggage is not so wide. Now for the first time I'm trying to read King in English, because I can't wait next year for the Italian translation of Dr Sleep. It's not so easy, and I often stop to look for meaning of words, but I'm really enjoying it! Bye!

Well...how to begin? First of all I have read lots of Stephen King's creations and I have to thank him for inspiring me to write horror and interesting stories and secondly I love the way he had written 'The Dark Tower'...please forgive my grammar mistakes(if they're exists) because here it's 2 AM and I can't think very well. It's the figures of speech that make it so difficult. I have cousins in Italy and they send me messages on Facebook in Italian which I have to translate. The idioms never translate. Good luck with Dr. Sleep. Reading it in a second language is a real tribute to Mr. King... and to you.
