Bruce | 26 comments My name's Bruce, and King's books have been around me all my life thanks to Mom being such a big fan of his. I'm currently re-reading It for something like the third time.

Hello everyone,
my name is Bruno and i'm from Portugal.
I've read a few SK books so far, IT (favorite so far), Misery (close second), the Stand, Joyland, Needfull Things, the Dark half, the Shining, Night Shift, Carrie and On writing.
I'm currently on the second book of the Dark Tower series, after a bit of a rocky start with the gunslinger which, for me, was very un-King like.

Roberto Perrini | 13 comments My name's Roberto. I'm Italian. I am a reader of the King's court.
I read King's books because excite me, make me scare, keep me glued to the pages of the book. KING IS KING

message 505: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Winterstine (leighfox) | 12 comments Hey everyone ;) Welcome to all the new people who are just joining up. It's awesome to see that SK still has so many avid fans after all these years! If anyone is looking to make more friends on Goodreads feel free to add me! Just a little info about myself, I have been a fan of SK for over 20 years. The first King novel I ever read was IT, I was only 12. I still remember buying the book at a used bookstore. I was with my dad, who never restricted my reading or taste in music, and when my mom realized my dad had let me buy a SK book, my mom flipped(Eventually she got over it). I was (possibly) a little too young for that book (sorry Dad) - I think at least I was too young to be really terrified - but I'm so glad that I had a parent who encouraged me to try whatever my little heart desired because reading King has more than entertained me. King's writing turned writing fiction into a passion for me and he is my biggest influence. Hands down favorites are Pet Sematary and Christine. I've read all his books, and as a working hobby I collect them in hardcover, hoping to get them all - it's a challenge as the hardcovers of most titles are no longer available, and the old titles are hard to find, but it makes for some fun afternoons at flea markets and used book stores.

message 520: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome John and Susan. John--I received The Stand for Christmas but I'm holding off until my camping trip this summer due to the length. It's my husband's favorite King book so I know I will love it, also.

message 521: by Malina (new)

Malina | 304 comments Welcome all new members!!
John and Kathryn, I'm sure you will love The Stand ,it's one of my favorite books :)

message 522: by Lanie (new)

Lanie (icevamp) | 145 comments I second what Malina said. The Stand rocks. It blew my mind, just putting myself in that mind frame...god, what would happen? I hope, that in that world, I'd get dreams from Mother Abigail, and not that other guy...My favorite characters: Nick Andros and Tom Cullen. "M-O-O-N, that spells moon."

message 523: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 8 comments Hi, I'm Jennifer and live in central Maine (sound familiar??), and I love SK books because the characters are so rich and the incredible storylines, but also because they are close to home. I love reading about familiar places used in creepy ways! My fave is The Stand, followed by It. Just finished the Dark Tower series, took me a long time to get into them, but once I did...well, you know!

Welcome, Jennifer. I live in western Maine so I know what you mean. Stephen King is spot on when it comes to knowing exactly how we act and talk. The books based in small Maine towns could be any real town around here.

You are so right about that! I can almost hear my neighbor, friend or relative speaking the words of the characters. Thanks for the welcome! ;)

Hey, MJ, welcome. I know you'll like the long walk. Even though it's a bachman book it's right up there with some of his best, I think.

Pretty good English. Mixing Italian and latin lit with King should be quite an experience. Where do they cross over... The Aeneid meets the Dark Tower?

message 538: by Lanie (new)

Lanie (icevamp) | 145 comments Hi MJ and Sabine,
Welcome! Yes, I second what Nick says. "The Long Walk" is one of my favorite stories. In my opinion, it's the best of the Bachman books. I read it in one day, and I enjoyed every minute.

Lanie

message 542: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Welcome, Zsuzsi. Where did you read your first King? And what was the book? Just curious. I remember seeing Under The Dome in the Venice airport, in both English and Italian, and thinking how great that was.

Thanks, Nick. :) My first King book was Carrie (absolutely accidentally), at home in Hungary. I read most of his books in Hungarian, he is super popular there too. :) In the past few years I switched to the English version though, that way I don't have to wait months for the translation. :)

Thanks. Being widely translated has to be a real testament to his popularity. He crosses many cultures.

Now that I'm deep into Duma Key I'm seeing the mythological references there too.

I thought Thinner was a great book too. I also was haunted by Tommyknockers. I still can't get the image of the characters losing their teeth out of my head. Both of these books are usually lambasted by other King aficionados. But, I love them both.

Finished the audiobook of Duma Key last night. Not just a great book but a great audiobook. I read it years ago and wanted to share it with my wife. She's not a reader, but on the plane trip back from our vacation she read several hundred pages... way ahead of where we'd listened... and then wanted to hear the audio of that part too. By the way, I think Wireman is one of King's best characters. Detailed review to come.
