S (booksstarsmoon) | 884 comments Would living next door be counted as either a plot link or a place setting to the lyric "Moved out of the house, so you moved next door"?

message 402: by D.G. (last edited Jan 11, 2013 04:57AM) (new)

D.G. For the plot link, would a book with an unhealthy relationship work?

Or a book where a main character is stalked? (Going by these lines)

Moved out of the house, so you moved next door
I locked you out, you cut a hole in the wall
I found you sleeping next to me, I thought I was alone

Or where a character is a cross dresser?

Dressed me up in women's clothes
Messed around with gender roles

Or where family/society is against the relationship?

My therapist said not to see you no more
She said you're like a disease without any cure

message 403: by S (new)

S (booksstarsmoon) | 884 comments Good Qs DG! I'm also wondering about those!

message 404: by Lauren (last edited Jan 11, 2013 04:45AM) (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) How about a book in which the main character disguises himself as a woman?

Dressed me up in women's clothes
Messed around with gender roles

I never thought I would have a book on my shelf that fit that description, lol!

YES

D.G. ~Shameless Hussy~ wrote: "Or where a character is a cross dresser?"

YES

Lauren the second question answers yours :)

I'm not sure about family/society being against the relationship...I'll check

message 406: by D.G. (last edited Jan 11, 2013 05:14AM) (new)

D.G. Thanks Susan.

What about a book where the characters had previously been together then separate?

Moved out of the house, so you moved next door
I locked you out, you cut a hole in the wall
I found you sleeping next to me, I thought I was alone
You're driving me crazy, when are you coming home

D.G. Susan (susayq) wrote: "I'm not sure about family/society being against the relationship...I'll check "

That's probably a stretch, but thanks for checking!

I'm also intersted to the answer to Lauren's question in message 402. :)

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments I had some brainstorming this afternoon. Are they acceptable?

message 409: by Susan (susayq ~), Moderator (new)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Shosho, We had said the name James would be acceptable.

message 410: by ShoSho , Moderator (new)

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments Just James? What about the rest?

message 411: by Alley (new)

Alley (alleycatfish) Would the title matching the lyrics count for anything?

Also, can we claim more than 1 plot point? Like if I were to claim stalking for plot, could I also claim serial killer + policeman=handcuffs (if it were to count, depending on the answer to Lauren's question in message 402)

message 412: by JenniferJ (new)

JenniferJ Would these work?

For Cover (2 Points) - On Cover is a pretty ladies dress and all video showed were dresses

For Plot (3 Points) - the lady in my book kidnaps and holds a man captive and they have passionate love and in the lyrics it has "This bed is on fire
With passionate love"
and in the lyrics it seems "she" is obsessed with bossing the guy around and doing what she wants and heck with what he wants....

Please, inquiring minds want to know. I found a Saul.

message 416: by D.G. (last edited Jan 11, 2013 06:24AM) (new)

D.G. A Saul? I thought the name of the artist was James? Or is that the name of the band and then can we use names of the artists in a band?

Meaning that if the song was by Blondie, we could pick a book written by somebody named 'Deborah' because that's the name of the main singer?

message 417: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) | 506 comments Yes James is the band. I think there are like 7 guys in the band.

I think band members names should work, but just wanted to make sure.

message 418: by S (new)

S (booksstarsmoon) | 884 comments I'm also interested in the answer to Lauren's Q in post 402 and Jennifer's question about dress as a cover connection!

message 419: by D.G. (new)

D.G. According to Wikipedia, here are the band members of that particular album: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laid_%28...

It seems the band had different members at different points but the ones below played in that album.

Larry Gott - guitar
Mark Hunter- keys
Tim Booth - vocals
David Baynton-Power - drums
Saul Davies - violin, guitar
Jim Glennie - bass
James Mike - drums

Lauren (laurenjberman) OK, I'm full of questions today so here goes another one...

The hero of my book is a lord of something or other with several names. His second name is James. Would this count as a link to the artist?

In addition, the villain's name is Mark-David. Both names are on D.G.'s list. So would this count even though he is not the hero?

message 421: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (last edited Jan 11, 2013 08:12AM) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) | 506 comments Ok I have a couple more questions.

1. Was there a rule about re-reads? Are they ok?

2. The only real places mentioned in the song are the bed and house/next door, how strong of a connection to those does there need to be?

This bed is on fire ,With passionate love -
Moved out of the house, so you moved next door

If there is significant "bed" time with or with out passion would it count?

Or if the plot centers around a move to a new house is that enough or does it have to be a move next door to someone?

I know it might be a stretch, but there has been a gauntlet thrown.

message 422: by D.G. (new)

D.G. My God! Alexander must have been the most popular hero's name in 1993. I've checked lots of books published in that year and I've found 3 guys with that name!

message 425: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments OK would this work for a link. The quote "you're like a disease without any cure" The book I want to read is The Children of Men by P.D. James It is about the whole world suddenly becoming infertile with no cure. I quickly glanced through and it mentions that they talked about it in terms of it being a disease and how in the beginning all the governments were trying to find a cure.

message 426: by D.G. (new)

D.G. OMG! I just found a 1993 book where besides James, the hero also has David and Mark in the name!!! HAHAHAHAHA!

message 427: by Carrie (last edited Jan 11, 2013 08:45AM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) With regards to character name matching, does it have to be a main character or can it be someone who appears often?

Edit: Or could the be the "bad" guy or play one of the supporting roles?

message 428: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Have we heard yet if points only count once per category? I just think it would be too much to count more than that. I want to enjoy reading the books not looking even deeper for books that cover each category more than once.

message 429: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I remember one of the mods saying that it could only be linked once but I can't find the post.

I think I saw it somewhere early in the thread, but not sure where now, that yes you could only get the points once for each category. You can get all 6 catergories, but each only once. I could be wrong, but pretty sure I saw it.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments Someone asked on the previous page but no one ever answered. About whether the band member names counted for Westlife or just the band name.

message 436: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 752 comments OK so for the book: Slow Waltz In Cedar Bend, would the word "waltz" being on the cover give me cover points because the singer dances in the video?

Lina | 5563 comments @ Lauren: Lauren wrote: "If my books is about a serial killer and a policeman, would that link to the handcuffs in the video?"
-Are the handcuffs on the cover? Or are you wanting this as a plot point? For cover link, I'd say yes. For plot, I'd say no because the handcuffs are an accessory, not a main part of the plot.

message 440: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments @Susanne: Susanne wrote: "Would living next door be counted as either a plot link or a place setting to the lyric "Moved out of the house, so you moved next door"?"
- Living next door would count as a setting link.

@D.G.: D.G. ~Shameless Hussy~ wrote: "For the plot link, would a book with an unhealthy relationship work? Or a book where a main character is stalked? (Going by these lines)..."
-An unhealthy relationship would definitely link to plot. As would a character being stalked. If someone were against the relationship was a significant prt of the sotry, I would say it counts as a plot point. So Romeo and Juliet would be good for this link, as would Slammed, but some random friend at some part of the story pointing out the disadvantages of the relationship wouldn't count. Does that make sense?

message 441: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments @ Shosho: ShoSho wrote: "Just James? What about the rest?"
- the song links you have for title, year, plot and cover all work, BUT, the name links don't. Only James will be counted. It can be a first name or surname of the author or one of the main characters, or even a name in the series. The other catch is it has to be spelled exactly the same. No Jim, Jamie or Jaims will count unless it has been specifically mentioned that James is the actual name and the other used as a nicknname. (The mod checking your group may ask for a quote to be provided)

message 442: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments @Alley: Alley wrote: "Would the title matching the lyrics count for anything? Also, can we claim more than 1 plot point? Like if I were to claim stalking for plot, could I also claim serial killer + policeman=handcuf..."
- The short answer is no. The title of the book has to match the title of the song for you to claim the title point. And only 1 link per category. So if you have an obsessive hero who's seeing a therapist to get over his next door neighbour from an on-off relationship and he takes to cross-dressing, you would have to choose one of those for the plot point. But you could still claim points for name, cover, setting etc, depending on your book. Does that help?

- For plot, yes. For cover, no.

For dresses to count for the cover link to the video, they would have to be 1950s housewife-y sort of dresses. Ball gowns etc wont count as a link to this song

No, the artist name is James which counts as a name. Band members names wont be accepted this week.

- Yes to the first question. The second part of the question about the bad guy is a no, but it doesn't matter because you'll already be able to get the name point for the James link.

- 1. Re-reads older than 6 months are fine.
2. A main character who was bed-ridden, or story about next door neighbours would count for setting points. A story where someone moved house, or a couple who spent a lot of time in bed (a LOT of time in a bed) could be counted for plot points.

message 448: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Questions about the answers! When you say "A story where someone moved house"...would it count if they were moving in together or getting married? Or does it only count for plot if one person is moving out?

message 449: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Also, I asked in message 409 if it counts for plot if the characters are together, then separate? (Relates to that moving out bit.)
