message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished my Horror and Young Adult. Edited my twelve books--I've changed my Graphic Novel and will have to look around again for Hist Lit and Lit Fic, as the books I'd chosen just don't do anything for me.

message 35: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Willis Here are the books I've selected for this challenge (sorry, I'm copy and pasting so they're not linked):

1) Classic - The Monk by by Matthew Lewis
2) Fantasy - A Clash of Kings by George RR Martin
3) Graphic Novel - Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
4) Historical Fiction - City Wolves by Heffron Dorris
5) Horror - The Tommyknockers by Stephen King
6) Literary Fiction - Sometimes a Great Notion by Ken Kesey
7) Mystery - The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler
8) Non-fiction - My Indian Boyhood by Luther Standing Bear
9) Romance - The Italian by Ann Radcliffe
10) Sci-fi - The Man in the High Castle by Phillip K. Dick
11) Thriller - Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
12) Young Adult - Out of Reach by Carrie Arcos

The only one I've read so far is Out of Reach, but I am currently reading The Tommyknockers.

message 36: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Willis I've decided to read The Fellowship of the Ring as my Fantasy instead of A Clash of Kings. As much as I enjoyed Game of Thrones, I honestly like the show better (gasp! I know, I know) and would rather find out what happens to the characters via the show rather than the books. I know the two differ, but once the show is finished, then I'll go back to the books. I honestly was more shocked by the things happening in the show than I was reading them in the book. Since I love The Lord of the Rings movies, I should probably read the books.

message 37: by Tiffani (new)

Tiffani (tiffanipassportbooks) | 29 comments I read The Secret Circle for my Sci-fi book, but it was rather disappointing. I need to find a better representative of the sci-fi genre.

message 38: by Jess :) (last edited Dec 12, 2013 08:46PM) (new)

Jess :) | 5 comments I'm game! Though some of these genres would not be my first choice (horror, sifi, graphic novels), it's probably good to branch out a bit. ;)

read...
Classics: Crime and Punishment
Fantasy: Life of Pi
Historical Fiction: The Count of Monte Cristo
Horror: The Haunting of Hill House
Literary Fiction: Their Eyes Were Watching God
Mystery: The Name of the Rose
Non-fiction: Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly
Romance:The Painted Veil
Science Fiction: The Time Machine
Thriller: The Feast of the Goat
Young Adult: Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore

And.. I just couldn't get myself to read a graphic novel. Ah well. 11/12 isn't so bad :)

message 39: by Janet (new)

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 86 comments Just completed Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood for graphic novel. It was an o.k. read at the beginning but got better by the middle of the book. I thought I would give it 3 stars. However the last two chapters - The Shabbat and The Dowry - were so compelling that I gave it 4 stars.

message 40: by Penney (last edited May 07, 2013 04:58AM) (new)

Penney | 12 comments I'm starting with the easy challenge but have my eye on some of the books in the hard and insane challenge so I'm hoping I'll be able to get to those too! Am picking books as I go but here's what I've settled on so far:

A) Easy Challenge - completed 7th May!
1) Classics - The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
2) Fantasy - A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
3) Graphic Novel - Blankets by Craig Thompson
4) Historical Fiction - Here be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman
5) Horror - Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
6) Literary Fiction - The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
7) Mystery - The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
8) Non Fiction - Call the Midwife: A True Story of the East End in the 1950s. by Jennifer Worth - may switch to my 'Biography/AutoBiography' entry later
9) Romance - Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez
10) Science Fiction - Neuromancer by William Gibson
11) Thriller - The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
12) Young Adult - The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
B) Hard Challenge
13) Adventure - A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin. Cheating, really, I know but I just had to read this book now!
19) Paranormal - Dracula by Bram Stoker
C) Insane Challenge
25) Children's - James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

It is a challenge - I'm not a fan of non-fiction although the Graphic Novel has been a nice surprise. If I attempt the Insane challenge, I definitely think I'll have to pass on the 'True Crime' genre - there's just some things I don't want to know :).

message 41: by Derek (last edited Mar 26, 2013 04:30PM) (new)

Hi Janet, you've finished all the books on your challenge list, amazing! Do you mind telling me how you do the "strike-through" (to cross out the book off your list), I seem to be unable to do it no matter how I tried. Sounds so silly, I know!

message 50: by Janet (new)

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 86 comments Booksy - I still have two books left, thriller and non-fiction to complete, just have not chosen them. To do the strike-through you use the < symbol, s,> symbol on one side of what you wish to strike-through. On the other side of it you use <, /, s, >. Check out the instructions for this and more above the comment box where is says (some html is ok). Just click on the words. Hope this helps.
