As a librarian myself - I work part time in a public library in southwest Virginia - I have to agree that there is no time to read accept on my lunch break. To busy helping patrons find things - fixing problems with the "self checkout" system, checking in books, helping people on the public computers, answering the phone, etc. etc. etc.

I have always sort of wanted to work at a library or a borders or something... I know that you don't have time to read, but the thought of being surrounded by so many books is incredible!!!

message 4804: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Finally finished another book! I read Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon for task 15.4. I went to Barcelona on Spring Break when I was in college. The fact that I had been there really contributed to my enjoyment of this book. I could clearly picture Daniel running down Las Ramblas, or sitting at the feet of the Columbus statue. Overall, this was a beautiful read. The language was very musical. I did not, however, find myself as engrossed in the story as most reviews have indicated. It wasnt until the last third of the book that I really got into the book.

Kristen Harvey Just finished I Capture the castle for a 10 pointer.. After all the inflation.. it really wasn't a five-star read for me.

I also read the first book of my 50 point task - The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket. Never finished this series a few years ago, so I figured I'd pick it up again. I just love the narration of the book.

25.6 JON’S TASK - Write a short Goodreads review and post a copy on the Spring challenge thread.
Read a book about Scotlands past rulers
In The Footsteps of Robert Bruce – Alan Young & Michael J Stead 190 pages READ
On the Trail of William Wallace – David R. Ross 146 pages READ
Mary Queen of Scots – Jayne Elizabeth Lewis READ

On the trail of William Wallace
I enjoyed the content of this book. At the beginning it went into detail about how Edward came into power over Scotland.
The book described the life of Wallace in detail and was also very informative about the historical events of these times.
I found it interesting that it went into detail about where the places are so that you could visit them today and follow the trail.

In The Footsteps of Robert Bruce – Alan Young & Michael J Stead 190 pages
This book gave me a greater understanding of the history behind the Scotland.
I now know a lot more about Robert the Bruce and the rulers of his times. I enjoyed the way the book described the leaders and historical events prior to Robert Bruce , who his enemies were and how he was successful in invading England.

Mary Queen of Scots – Jayne Elizabeth Lewis
This book focused on the her life.
It went into detail about the attitude of Elizabeth to her and how her religion was held against her on returning to Scotland.

To quote wikipedia: "The film X2 begins with the main antagonist, Magneto, reading an old copy of The Once & Future King in his prison cell. When Magneto saves the X-men's plane from crashing, he asks Mystique, "When will these people learn to fly?", a reference to The Once & Future King's recurring theme that men wouldn't fight wars if they could fly. At the end of the film, Xavier is using the book as a teaching tool."

Melissa (melitious) I have done a little rearranging -- I moved Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer from my ebook task to my two YA books. I will now be reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams for my ebook.

I have completed task 25.8 and am up to 75 points, after the adjusting.

Now I'm working on Plum Spooky!

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Cynthia, I think you might have missed the last points I posted. I read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros for Task 10.2 (Cinco de Mayo). I believe that brings me to 280 total points. Thanks!

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I've finished a couple more tasks, and have finally made it to the 300-point mark!

Task 15.8 - Book + Interview: Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson (4/21/09) & Speak Interview with Laurie Halse Anderson

This book was really powerful, but also seriously depressing... The end was hopeful, at least. I tried to find a good Laurie Halse Anderson interview where she discusses Speak, and I found this one, which was very nice. (She also talks about the movie version, which I now have on my Netflix queue. I think Kristen Stewarts monotone way of talking will be perfect for Melinda!)

Task 15.9 - Color Title + 2 Foods: Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery (4/20/09) + I had miso soup (which had a ton of green onions and seaweed) and a sushi roll (which had avocado and cucumbers)

Loved this book. So so cute! Not as much Gilbert Blythe as I would have liked, but I'll live. Now I need to read the sequels... perhaps for the summer challenge....

Lori (batchelorxyz) | 158 comments I read Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowan Boys by Kate Brian and Brunette's Strike Back by Kieran Scott for the 50 point task. I thoroughly enjoyed Megan Meade. It was a very interesting storyline.

I had to get both I Was a Non-Blonde Cheerleader and Brunette's Strike Back because I couldn't remember for sure if I had read the first one or not. I had. Brunette's was great. I read the whole book last night in the bathtub. It certainly isn't award worthy, but it was very entertaining.

So that brings my total points to 265......300 here I come. :)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I finished The Constant Princess for the What's Your Sign task (I'm a Leo) - I really enjoyed the first half of the book that talked about Katherine's (Henry VIII's first of many wives) early life before leaving Spain and her marriage to Arthur - I really hope her life was as happy during that time as Gregory paints it because her life was so awful later on. Historical fiction is my favorite genre but I really think I prefer when history is more of a backdrop with fictional characters that I don't know what really to. Knowing what happened to her later in life kind of ruined the last half of the book for me but I still gave it 4/5 stars.

Leora Finally finished task 10-5, read 'Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell' by Susanna Clarke. A great story, good read, just long! I wouldn't say the story is too long per se, because it never got boring; it's just a big story.

So now I have 390 points.

Oh my goodness, talk about drama! Private is filled with it, and everytime you think you have everything figured out... you're wrong. It is nothing but young adult angsty drama... The perfect thing to read when you want mystery, intruge, etc without being too serious... Great series!

Shellie (Layers of Thought) (shelliesshelves) Mini reviews of my last 3 books:
Uglies - Scott Westerfield
This was a fun book that made me wish there had been YA sci-fi for girls like this when I was a tween. I would have loved it - a strong female character, a little romance and "hoverboards".
Graceling - Kristen Cashore
I really liked this book also. It is for a bit older YA because of some of the adult themes - light sex and birth control. So over 14/15 years would be my recommendation. Once again strong female character, who has the gift/grace of being able to kill. Set in the "middle ages" of another realm. It was fun.
Sacrifice - S.J. Bolton
I had three winners here. Another book with a strong female character. Athough this one is for adults. The setting is on the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scottland. This thriller/mystery involves a local legend which is about trolls, so there is a bit of a supernatural theme here.
Uglies
Graceling
Sacrifice

I learned a lot about Queen Elizabeth II, which surprised me as I thought I was relatively knowledgable. I was in Paris when Princess Di died so I thought that the part about the Queen's take on Di's death was more balanced than portrayed in the media. It all goes to show that the media cannot be trusted to give a balanced perspective.
