Steph Completed for 25 points:
5. BONNIE’S TASK - Read a book outside your normal genre(s). Example: Bonnie usually reads YA, fantasy, nonfiction and classics so she'd have to read short stories, plays, mysteries, etc.

I read Portrait of a Killer Jack The Ripper - Case Closed by Patricia Cornwell (I typically don't read true crime books).

I really didn't enjoy this - it felt like she was skipping around in time a lot, and I kept getting confused. I think I would have gotten a lot more out of it if I knew more about Jack the Ripper before reading this book. I do know a lot more now than I did before, though!!

Angela | 1934 comments Yea!!! I finally found one I am interested in doing :)

Wendy Corsi Staub (thriller) writes under Wendy Markham (chick lit). I have read all of Wendy's Slighlty Series (which I loved!), but she has other books that I have not yet read.

So excited now :)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) For the YA people,

Meg Cabot/Meggin Cabot (contemporary romance)/Patricia Cabot (historical romance)/Jenny Carroll (YA - Mediator and 1-800 series)

Rachel Hawthorne (YA)/Lorraine Heath (romance)/Jade Parker (looks like YA also)

message 4454: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Seriously, Meg Cabot has a pen name??? I am still learning so much! This is so interesting!

message 4455: by Sharon75uk (new)

Sharon75uk | 69 comments I have decided on Meg Cabot and Jenny Carroll and I am looking forward to getting to know this author.
Thanks for the great task :)

The list Sarahnicole posted earlier included Joyce Carol Oates with her pseudonym Lauren Kelly. If I can get this task accomplished I will use this author. Fantasticficktion has her listed as including "mainstream" fiction, which they show as being different thant mystery, romance, etc.

I would *think* that we could still use her. Her early romance novels were originally published under the name Steffie Hall (Thanksgiving, Foul Play, Naughty Neighboor, etc.). It wasn't until her Plum series became popular that they rereleased her old novels under the name Evanovich. I'm sure we'll get clarification from Cynthia. I'll cross my fingers. I haven't read any of the Plum books yet, but I've got the first two here at home and it would be nice if I could fit one of them into the challenge.

I was hoping for the same thing because I have been curious about Janet Evanovich's books.

I am glad I have an alternative :)

message 4461: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) I can't name everyone because there are too many but thank you to everyone who gave ideas for the 50 point task! I have a couple choices now and I'm sure one will work. I had no idea so many authors used (multiple) pen names and I couldn't even think of one! Just something I don't think about or look into.
This really is interesting though- great job Sandy!
About holding back- I may have held back if I was in "danger" of being that far in the lead! I would have been anxious I wouldn't make that "good" of a task! LOL

message 4462: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (cddimmitt) I'm also hoping we can read Janet Evanovich's older books. I just finished reading Plum Spooky and I have two of her romances in my TBR pile from the library.

message 4463: by Maliades (new)

Maliades Joanna, I know exactly what you mean about flying... I'm the person on the plane who freaks out at every little bump. And that's after the medication... sigh. Maybe I'll try some Meg Cabot next time.

message 4464: by Rora (new)

message 4470: by Angie (new)

Angie (angie) This is great because now I can read J.R. Ward's Lover Enshrined for the spring challenge, but that also means I have to read something by Jessica Bird. Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! All her books look terrible.

message 4471: by Rora (new)

Rora I searched and searched on what to do for the 50 points, and finally decided on Robin Hobb and Megan Lindholm.

message 4472: by Amy (new)

Amy Rory wrote: "Jon: Searched & can not locate any books written under Phillip Dick's psyudonym - any ideas?"

Rory - I found this:

Pen names

Dick occasionally wrote under pen names, most notably Richard Philips and Jack Dowland. The surname Dowland refers to composer John Dowland, who is featured in several works. The title Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said directly refers to Dowland's best-known composition, Flow My Tears. In the novel The Divine Invasion, the 'Linda Fox' character is an intergalactically famous singer whose entire body of work consists of remakes of John Dowland compositions. Also, some protagonists in Dick's short fiction are named 'Dowland'.

The short story "Orpheus with Clay Feet" was published under the pen name "Jack Dowland". The protagonist desires to be the muse for fictional author Jack Dowland, considered the greatest science fiction author of the 20th century. In the story, Dowland publishes a short story titled "Orpheus with Clay Feet", under the pen name "Philip K. Dick". In the semi-autobiographical novel VALIS, the protagonist is named "Horselover Fat"; "Philip", or "Phil-Hippos", is Greek for "horselover", while "dick" is German for "fat" (a cognate of thick).

Although he never used it himself, Dick's fans and critics often refer to him familiarly as "PKD" (cf. Jorge Luis Borges' "JLB"), and use the comparative literary adjectives "Dickian" and "Phildickian" in describing his style and themes (cf. Kafkaesque, Orwellian).

message 4473: by SusannaW (new)

SusannaW (susannauk) | 51 comments I don't think a lot of the classic author names work for the 50 point task, because the task asks for not just an author using a pseudonym, but one actively published under 2 different names. eg I don't think George Orwell ever published under his real name (Blair) or a second name, did he?

message 4474: by Sera (last edited Apr 16, 2009 04:51PM) (new)

Sera Finished a 25 point task

8. SARA'S TASK - Read a book that has a title of 12 or more words. How Dogs Think: What the World Looks Like to Them and Why They Act The Way They Do by Stanley Coren

This book was interesting; dogs are more like humans that we think.

Total Tasks: 8
Total Points: 145 + 25 = 170

Of course, "The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe" was so funny and I can't wait to start on the next book in the Hitchhiker series.
"The Glass Castle" left me astonished that two parents could be so selfish and still manage to raise relatively decent kids. I don't usually read memoirs, but I'm glad I read this one. It was really eye opening.

Amy

Task 10.6 - Unaccustomed Earth is my third read for this author. I get lost in her stories and, at times, I can smell the Indian spices and hear the jangle of the bracelets. As has been frequent in this challenge, the first half of the book is set in my home state and the familiarity with the towns as described by Lahiri lends an extra connection for me.

Speaking of extra - my selections for the 50 point midway task are And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and Absent in the Spring (Christie writing as Mary Westmacott)

Happy Friday everybody.
