Leah Finished Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt for 10 point task #1. Still plugging away at the 6 wives for Jon's task, but needed a break. Having a hard time staying focused, but I'm pretty sure it's just me & my crazy life - the book is great, I just can't concentrate for any length of time!! I may stop and pick up an easy mystery or a romance - something outside my usual genres, just so I can read without having to think too hard!

Total points this task = 10
Total points to date = 250

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I know this isn't actually relevant to the Challenge, but we have talked about My Sister's Keeper a little here, and was wondering if anyone else had heard about this, and what they thought...
They are making it into a movie. I hate adaptations as a general rule, and after looking up this one, they are changing SO much! GRR!! Jodi Picoult mentioned a change to the end (grr) and they cast Cameron Diaz to play Sara, the mom (grr... I feel that is a bad role for her. She's too peppy and happy...) AND they cut an entire character, Julia, who has her own chapters! Grr!!

I am sorry, but I am really annoyed. It is one of my favorite books, and they are changing it! :(

I haven't learned anything except what I've heard from other Picoult fans on here but I've heard basically the same thing but not about Julia being cut out. It is annoying. You'd think if someone considers the book to be 'good enough' to turn into a movie that they'd want to change it as little as possible. In my opinion the book would turn in to a great movie with no changes at all. It's a shame is what it is.

Thank you!! I totally agree! I have never understood the need to change big parts of the book, especially the end!! I understand small changes and things that are needed to make it flow better as a movie, but seriously! There is no point to a lot of that changes! Grr... Oh well. What can you do. (Nothing, bah!) I just won't watch it, because I will get really angry if I do.

I agree 100%- I don't know if I won't watch it though! I don't know if I can not watch it. LOL I think I'm hoping that *maybe* it won't be changed as much as we think? I don't know- probably wisful thinking.
It's a shame they feel the need to do that though- there's a reason certain books sell that well and that's because enough people like the book the way it is!

I know! I always get so angry when I watch adaptations, I have just about totally given up on them. My family teases me about it. I'm not allowed to watch an adaptation with them the first time anymore, because I spend the whole movie making outraged noises... I will them complain about everything they changed as we leave the movie, and tell everyone how annoyed I was with the shameful excuse for an adaptation.
If you do see the movie, (I don't know when it is coming out...) you should let me know what you thought. Maybe if others don't think it too changed, I will see it, but I doubt it. Removing a decently large character, and changing the ending leaves me little hope the movie will be any good.
I really wish they would leave the books alone! They are good enough the way they are!!

I am always more nervous about movie adaptations when I like the books a lot, and My Sister's Keeper is a favorite.
I have only read one other by Picoult (Change of Heart), but I really want to read more because I like her writing style, and the issues she deals with. Since you seem to have read several, which do you recommend? I want to read more, but don't know which one to pick up next. Any suggestions would be great!

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I just finished Where the Red Fern Grows for the 15 pt task with food, and I ate pepperoni pizza, with red juice, and red vines licorice.

I absolutely LOVE this book. I would have to say this is my favorite book of all time, and is definitely the one I read most often! I can say I have read it at least 50 times, without exaggerating. I used to read it once every month or so. I reread it about once a year now, and I cry every single time. It's funny too, because I know exactly what parts make me cry, and how hard.
I don't know why I would call it my favorite either, but I love it more and more everytime I read it. One thing I love about it though, is the imagery. I don't usually have a lot of mental pictures when I read. I have some, but they are usually fairly unclear, and more general thoughts of how something looks, than an actual picture, but for some reason this book is so intenly vivid for me. The whole thing is full of mental pictures for me, and I have absolutely no problems visualizing everything.
This is a book I recommend to everyone, and think everyone should read at some point. I was really excited for the color challenge, because I am always looking for an excuse to reread this one!!

This brings my total to 270 I believe.

Ooooh- I really may not be the best person to ask that to Ashley. I'm a die hard Picoult fan- I loved them all. LOL If I really had to pick a couple to recommend to someone I think I'd go with Nineteen Minutes, Harvesting The Heart, and/or Plain Truth. Perfect Match too! That was a really good one too! Jeez, to be honest, the only two I wouldn't recommend at first are and Songs of the Humpback Whale A Novel in Five Voices and Salem Falls and I just would save them for later were I to read them all again for the first time knowing what I know now. Does that make sense? LOL Those two are just books that I think you have to already have a feel for her to really, really, appreciate. Nineteen MinutesNineteen Minutes

Maliades Jon, yes an audiobook would work! Although I don't prefer them, it will work! I'll have to find an interesting one!

Shannon, if I wasn't freakishly afraid of planes, I'd definitely be doing that. I don't take the bus either, but train, hmm, that would be interesting, I'll have to see if there is a trip I can take on a train!

Lol that is awesome! I have been thinking about reading Nineteen Minutes, so that is great that you recommend it! I am excied to read more, because I like her writing a lot, but I don't feel like I can call myself a true fan yet, because I've only read 2 so far. I'm working on it!!

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I've finished another book! Yay!

Task 15.5 - Winner of the Newbery in 1983: Tell Me If the Lovers Are Losers by Cynthia Voigt (3/31/09)

I liked it quite a bit. It started off REALLY slowly, but once I got about... 60ish pages in, I started becoming more interested in the characters. It was still a bit weird, with all the philosophy ideas in it (I haven't had much exposure to philosopy) and all the references to King Lear (which I haven't read), but I liked it. I'm still not sure what the title is supposed to mean... The book is about three girls who are roommates their first semester of college in 1961--and they are DEFINITELY not lovers! (They don't even get along very well!) *shrugs* Whatever, Cynthia Voigt! :)

I finished my 3/4/5 task and since I can't seem to get enough of these Janet Evanovich books I stayed up and read Hot Six for the Author Born in March/April/May task. I plan to read the next one Seven Up for the humor task but I have to wait to get it from the library - in the mean time I'm going to work on Angela's task and read Dead Until Dark and Nights in Rodanthe from LISA CO's book list.

Nineteen Minutes was the very first I read and I was hooked from page 1. How she manages to give so many different sides to a story and be so realistic and accurate is beyond me. You know she has a new one coming out in 2010 and it revolves around Asperger's Syndrome. I've never wanted time to fly so fast! LOL I know she can do a lot with that too. I forget where I even heard of her at first but ever since I've been trying to find an author who can give me a similiar reading experience and I haven't come close to finding it yet.

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) I'm finished 3 of the 3,4,5 challenge and halfway finished with 4. :) Maybe by tomorrow I'll have the entore task done!

message 3395: by Leah (new)

Leah Ok, this was so light and easy - I almost feel guilty claiming 25 points for it! Read One Little Sin by Liz Carlyle for 25 point task #5 (a book outside your normal genre). But I NEVER read romance, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I don't really have anything to compare it to in the genre, but I have to say it was better than I expected. It did hold my interest most of the afternoon, and parts of it made me laugh out loud, which is always nice.
