Sara ♥ (saranicole) If you scroll all the way to the bottom of this message board, just above the comment box, there are links that look like this:

<< previous 1 2 ... 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 next >>

You can use those links to move between pages of comments. If you click on the 2 and then scroll all the way down again, the bar will change to:

<>

And those are the basics of page navigation... :)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I forgot about the 50-point task. That makes me REALLY nervous!! But we have almost a month to catch up!

Carol, you mean you're not going to read that much, or you don't understand it? Assuming you mean you don't understand it, from the Challenge Rule # 2:

**New to the challenge is a midway winner - the top point earner at the midway point - Noon on APRIL 15th - will get to pick a 50 point task for the Spring Challenge.***

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I don't know if this has been asked, and it might be a stretch, but would Princess work for the Woman's History task?

message 2505: by Josie (new)

Josie (maid_marian) Jon - for your task, I was wondering if a book about a duchess would be ok, or does it have to be a king or queen? I have Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire sitting on my bookshelf, waiting to be read...

Ines | 25 comments For anyone looking for books to read for Darla's task, the Jane Austen Book Club movie mentions two books by Ursula Le Guin - [Book: The Left Hand of Darkness] and [Book: Lathe of Heaven].

I'm personally going to check out the former. Hope it's good. :)

message 2508: by El (new)

El Sai, I really enjoyed Left Hand - I hope you do too!

message 2509: by El (new)

El Josie wrote: "Jon - for your task, I was wondering if a book about a duchess would be ok, or does it have to be a king or queen? I have [b:Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire|319300|Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire..."

Josie, I think the idea is that the subject matter in some way is related to the British monarchy. I don't know that Jon specified it had to be about a king or queen. Georgiana's relationship to Princess Diana would probably be sufficient enough for this task here.

message 2510: by Rora (new)

Rora 9. SARA'S TASK - Read a book that has a title of 12 or more words.

For 25 points I read...Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire

4. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Task – Read or listen to a book while you are on a plane, on a train, or in a car (or other mode of transport like a bus/combinations of transportation).
Tales of the City, Armistead Maupin.

TOTAL POINTS: 115.

message 2513: by Leah (new)

Leah Quick point update: Finished 5 point task #10 (April Showers). Read Stormy Weather A Novel by Paulette Jiles. Not bad, but not the best thing I've read lately. Set during the Depression - lots of strong women characters which I usually like, but I just had a hard time keeping focused on this. Still sitting in parking lots laughing out loud at David Sedaris trying to finish the audiobook task and enjoying that much more!

message 2520: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments Two more challenges completed:

5.10 book with flower in title: Black Rose by Nora Roberts completed 3.18.09
this is the middle book of her In the Garden trilogy, and includes an ongoing resident-ghost story. What I like about the series is the way she creates a loving, caring family unit without being saccharine or unrealistic.

15.5 book by author who won major literary prize in my birth year: 1938 Newbery Award
The White Stag by Kate Seredy completed 3.19.09
this story is wonderfully told and beautifully illustrated by author. She draws on Hungarian folk tales and mythology to tell the story of how Attila the Hun was chosen by the Huns' god Hadur to find the enchanted land promised by their god to their ancestors. The author is Hungarian-born and has written several other Hungarian folktale books.

Added to:
5.6 Damsel in Distress by P.G. Wodehouse completed 3.16.09
5.7 Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters completed 3.5.09
10.4 Suddenly by Candace Camp Camp was born May 23, 1949 completed 3.15.09
15.6. Death in Venice by Thomas Mann (translated from original language) completed 3.15.09
15.8. Brisingr Christopher Paolini (read book & listen to interview with author) completed 3.14.09

25.8 Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon 3.9.09
AND Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse completed 3.13.09

new total as of 3.19.09 = 95 points

Jamie I just finished Revenge of the Spellmans by Lisa Lutz, which is the third book in her Spellman series. I loved it (even more than the first two books) and can't recommend the series highly enough - it's SO much fun and absolutely hilarious! It fit perfectly for the spring break task, too, as the geography of San Francisco was mentioned quite often. This was really interesting to me, since I just returned from SF this weekend.

message 2534: by Rhiannon (new)

Rhiannon | 51 comments I am a bit confused of why Alice in Wonderland would not count for the 25 point books. The version I read was 128 pages. And Lewis Carroll is on the k=list of Diarist. Maybe I am not understanding what type of book that I need to read for that one. Can you please explain it better?

message 2535: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Rhiannon, for El's task you have to read a non-fiction book by a noted diarist or a book about a noted diarist. Lewis Carroll would work if he is on the list, but you'd have to read a non-fiction book by him, not "Alice in Wonderland". Does that help?

The full title of my copy reads: What Might Have Been: Leading Historians on Twelve 'What Ifs' of History. (Exactly 12 Words long!). I don't know why my copy has a different full title than the one listed on goodreads.

Bonnie- do you still have the book? Can you tell me if it's paperback or hardback and the number of pages?

message 2544: by Josie (new)

Josie (maid_marian) Thanks Jon :)
Today I managed to plough through the book I'd chosen for Sara's 25 point task (read a book with 12+ words in the title) - Empire of Blue Water Captain Morgan's Great Pirate Army, the Epic Battle for the Americas, and the Catastrophe That Ended the Outlaws' Bloody Reign. It's the first novel-length non-fiction book I've ever read, and whilst some parts were very interesting, there were a lot that dragged, especially the last chapter.

More specifically, you have to choose a diary from one of the diarists who lived before 1900. If you decide to go non-fiction, it has to be a book about the diarist. You can not read just any non-fiction book by one of those authors.

It's paperback and 188 pages. It was published by Phoenix in 2005 in the UK. The cover is the same as the one on goodreads, but with the different subtitle. It's this one.

Terri (terrisa-uk) I've just finished The Magicians' Guild by Trudi Canavan for the 10 point task, read a book about magic/magicians/etc.

Fantasy novels have never really been my 'thing' but I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next in the series! I'd recommend this for those new to or unsure about the genre!
